Mog spotted on eBay
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:21:27 am »
Hi,

I am looking to get into Mog ownership and am planning to start with a 404.  I have spotted this one on German eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=111050761123

I have been talking with the owner via Google translate and all appears OK mechanically.  I have not been able to get a list out of him but it appears to be coming with 600kg of spare parts!

So, what do you think an unfinished 404 with power steering is worth?  It is going to cost about £750 to get it here and then I'll need to pay VAT on the final purchase price.  I need to decide if it is worth getting one from Germany or if I'll be better finding one here.

Cheers

Ian

back body isnt original, (looks like its of a big chassis like a 1550 probably dad says) also the back of the cabs cut out, (it irritates me when people do things like that, mainly cause its been done to my westfalia  :( ) plus the spider frame, which means hes probably drilled the chassis.
It has however got power steering and bake servo unit. and pto, but thats not special really.

So dad recons itll fetch around €2-3000 in germany. youll probably find one over here cheaper, as there's less off a market. the main thing you need is power steering for off road really.

Also, if youre offroading it, i wouldnt go hard top (even though they do look awesome  8) ) cause theres more chance of bending it with trees and stuff, and also if you roll it even with a cage, theres all sorts of things that stick up out of the ground. i would go soft top with a cage, that way you can remove the top

Thanks for the reply.  It was the power steering that drew me to it, combined with the thought it might only reach €1200 - €1500.  How available are 406 power steering systems for retro fitting to a 404?

I have had the Land Cruiser on its side several times, not managed on the roof yet, so I am a well acquainted to body damage.

you cant fit 406 power steering to a 404, not without a heck of a lot of work, we've never heard of it being done, it looks the same as 421 power steering though  ;). yeah, ive never had anything on its side yet, seen plenty though, its just thats a very tidy body to bend  :)

Admittedly it says sold out but it appears to be doable.

http://vonsmog.com/unimog_used_parts.html

Near the bottom of the list  406-416 Steering System Complete steering system from a 406. Everything from wheel to pitman arm!. Just what you need to add powersteering to a 404.

Forgive me, I'm trying to learn . . .

aha! dad says some guy in America did it, but its a big heavy block the 406 power steering, so its not really worth it. he says youre better of buying something like a ZF powers steering system of a tractor, which runs of hydraulics. some 411 snow cutters were fitted with ZF power steering from the factory (ours for example  ;) ) it'll be cheaper and easier

Thanks.  I've been doing more digging, Google is a wonderful thing, and it seems several people have used an electric power steering column.  Seems a Vauxhall Corsa is a popular choice.  Chop the Mog column, weld in the new one, attach 12 volts via a module to control the amount of assistance - needed because the 404 does not have a speed sensor, and away you go.  I'm sure it is more complicated than that but it gives the jist.  All up about £200.

Well get on with it and tell me how it goes  :D

I think I will abandon the German one and find a UK one.  I was assuming adding power steering was a £1k+ job.

Just had an eBay message from the German seller, he wants €4800 for it.  Good luck with that then .  .  .

ha, we've been getting on with the landmog, on and of, for 18 years now, although we're supposed to be getting it drivable by Masham show in june.

he might get that  it depends what people are willing to pay, thats just what we would pay, and we've seen enough sell.  :) its just got a lot of work that needs to go into it to get it going.
