Service
« on: September 14, 2015, 05:55:52 pm »
Hello there I ve not long got myself a u900 406 and have been doing the jobs needed to it mainly rebuilding the brakes I got some new wheel cylinders from ebay after atkinson vos told me they are not available and now it stops great.

I am now looking for some advise on servicing engine is easy but what oil does the axles and gear boxes take? I ve got a cascade box is that a separate unit to change or all in one? where is a good place to get a manual?

Many thanks Stu.

Welcome stupot
Your gearbox wants non hypoid 80 and your axles ep 80/90 gear oil and if your carrying a lot of weight I would recommend sintranz from MB it is debatable if it's worth the cost if your not working your Unimog the other advantage is it frees up some power when it's cold, you can get synthetic oil for the gearbox to but again it costs a lot in comparison.
There are two drains on the gearbox one fill, early gearbox, fill it through the dipstick and later one has a level plug on the right side.
Check levels before dropping any oils that way if it's over full you know you've got a seal gone up line also give the hubs a flush through and look for any metal.
Enjoy

Good advice from Moose as always!

The manual can be found on ebay. Or give Ibbetts a call (01480 473452) and they will probably be able to supply it. The others can too.... I just like Ibbetts because they're very good so tend to go to them first! :D

Brillant thanks changed oils last night and no sign of any metal,,,, which for an old tractor that's more than likely worked hard through its life is good I think,, Now for the next question I want to mount a 2.8 ton hiab on it can you drill/weld unimog chassis ok? as there seems to be no real mounting point behind the cab, tho I am coming round to thinking that mounting it on the back would work better how strong are the 2 mounts on the rear crossmember ? I ve got to large cast mountings each side of the tow hitch these at the moment have another tow hitch bolted to it that is normal height I,e tractor/ land rover height I was wondering if I can use these mounts to bolt the crane on the back meaning I can take it off easy for off road work and play any advise would be handy they seem will fitted to the chassis but don't have the biggest of bolts? tho I guess if you can mount a tow hitch on it they should be strong enough for a crane?

Thanks Stu...

NO never drill or weld a Unimog chassis, there are several chassis mounts to work off.
You really need a crane base because your chassis flexes from corner to corner if you bolt to this you risk stiffening and that can cause the chassis to tear.
My 406 Doka has a crane mounted on the back this made sense because it's wasted space I used the implement mounts on the back but you must use a pivet point on the front where the linkage Rams mount and that will get in the way of the spider frame ( where your body mounts to.
A very small crane could be fitted to the implement mounts but not a 2.8 t per meter it's the leverage on the bolts that's the issue. proper crane bases are expensive 2k plus second hand.

Stupot,

I have a radio remote control Tico @ 4.8t/m crane on my 406, it's behind the cab, on top of the loadbed, which is on a demountable subframe and takes 10 mins to get off ( however it rarely comes off), your welcome to come around and have a look how it's mounted, and I also have the unimog book of reference which states where to mount your frame onto, so you can see where Moose means.

Cranes are fantastic, and since I installed the Radio remove, I've found it even better and quicker to use, hence it rarely comes off.

I'm near Alton Towers.

That's a beast of a crane mines not that big, unfortunately I am down near Brighton so bit far to pop up for a look but it would be brilliant if you could take some pictures of the mountings on yours and any information in your book would be good to, I am going to have a go at fitting mine soon.

Thanks Stu.

Stu,

Mine came from just outside Brighton one freezing cold Saturday morning so it would be more than glad to see you!

I can take some pictures for you, it's best to chat about it so can you find out how to contact me through this somehow without be wedging my tel number for all to see?

I could send them off the wifes phone then to yours if you have a new type of phone, rather than one that just rings like mine!

Ed you can send that info in a private message. If you click on the user name of the person you want to contact then look down the list on the left side of their profile page there's a link to click on that allows you to send them a message that's only visible to you and them.

I wanna crane!!!!! Lol

You could use this system simon make the frame with a rock infer hitch, it's difficult to to stabilise the linkage but I've done it in the past.
Fit two stabiliser brackets on your 406
