Hi all. Just discovered this forum, having recently bought my first ever Unimog, an ag-spec 1979 U1000 424.121.
It's in average condition I guess, far from perfect but functional, and good enough for what I'm planning to use it for (mostly a bit of fun and a little bit of farm work).
My biggest niggles to sort right away are some air leaks which mean the primary tank loses all pressure overnight, the steering is a bit vague (but manageable), and the brakes pull to one side. I'm confident I can resolve all these, though the sheer size and weight of the bits is a bit daunting as I don't have an indoor workshop and generally have to work on my own; I'm more used to Land Rovers!
The air leak is mainly down to the hi/lo actuator on the gearbox. Having had it off the truck and cleaned it I see it *can* seal if the plunger is pushed in far enough but in place the gear lever doesn't push the plunger fully home, and it exhausts continuously as well as pressurising the gearbox, so I'm currently trying to work out if there's an adjustment I'm not seeing...
The brakes I haven't started on; will have to pluck up the courage to have the front wheels and callipers off to see what's going on. Hopefully it's just a sticky piston as a result of standing for some years.
Other than that, I'm desperately hoping not to find any really expensive bits needing to be fixed ;-)
I see at least one familiar "face" on here from facebook (Rabbit Recovery), any other owners in the South West?
