Hello all
« on: October 23, 2014, 08:23:29 pm »
Hello all,

I thought I would join here, as I have just got myself another 404, (had two of them before, about 7 years ago) I restored one, then we decided to buy a new house, the wife said as we did not know where we were going to move to, it was a good idea to sell them! (what a fool I was!)
So to cut a long story short, we bought a house with a big field, and lots of barns! Mmmm my garage!

3 months ago I started a new job, they used to have over 200 mogs, (sold them to brazil) there was one left, that the boss said to use for the company hack, for pulling things or jump starting some of the tanks! (yes tanks!)  :)
No one did anything about it, now I come along, and they are going to scrap it! Nooooooo!
It's now mine, with some spares! Engines, boxes, axles! Yipeeeee
So my plan, the rear bed is missing, I am going to make a new one from aluminium, and use it mostly for off road playing, (it will be road registered also)
So I will no doubt have some posts and pictures to add, questions to ask and answer!

Thanks everyone
Regards
Shaun

Hi shaun,
Welcome to the forum.
You are a lucky guy, work with lots of interesting vehicles (What is your job if you don't mind me asking ?), a mog with lots of spares and plenty of room to play with it!
If you find any excess spares at work I'm sure someone on here would be interested. :D
What area of the country are you in.

Hi DG,

I thought it would have shown my details, I went to "my profile" section and entered the details, but now I look and it's not showing under my user name???  ???   How do I get it to show them?

I am in Belgium,
I work for a company that buy military vehicles from the army (whatever country that may be) and upgrade, refurbish, modify etc etc to the new customers requirements, be it engine, weapons, configeration, or whatever, we can do it.
As I am the new blood there, and my hobby is military vehicles, I am also taking them down the military vehicle restoration route! They have been building/upgrading tanks and vehicles for more than 40 years, we have got all the equipment, over head cranes, shot blasting bay! (huge) painting bay, lathe, mill etc.
Can do all sorts of welding, fabrication (I am the ally welder there!) so they have the perfect place for it.
I know of someone who is restoring (just about finished in fact) a ww2 Sherman, every time he had to lift anything big, or heavy (turret, power pack etc) he had to hire in a mobile crane, Expensive!!!!!!!
We have over 400 tanks in stock! (I'm like a kid in a sweet shop)

I keep going over to the stores and fiddling with my mog, and looking for spares!  :)
Can't wait to get it home, have to move the two leopard tanks thats blocking it in, but as I do it in my lunchtime that may be a while!!

Regards
Shaun

Welcome to the club Shaun and we hope you enjoy your Unimog.
I have visited a lot of dealers in Europe in the past where there were rows and rows of 404s that you would think we're going to be there forever. And prices were cheap now they are getting scarcer the prices are rising. The 404 is getting to be a bit of a hobby Mog here in the UK good offroad and cheap to insure and tax ? And as long as you don't use it everyday fuel is not such a problem.
For what purpose are you going to use your 404 ?

Hi mate welcome I own a 404 and would say if you're usein it for offroad I will build a steel frame bed with alloy plates or a thick alloy bed you need some weigh over the back wheels or they will slide sideways down steep hills back wheels try to overtake the front

and look at ians 404 evolution thread for the rear spring upgrades for articulation increase
Need some pics thanks keith

Thanks for the welcome,

It will be a play toy, so mostly off road, but I also want to put a flatbed on because I will also use it to help collect the hay and straw bails in the summer, (my wife and her friend have horses)

I see what you mean about the weight over the rear, but I was also trying to keep the all up weight down, for "towing on a trailer" reason when we go far away playing, (my friend just came back from Germany, ferstenau forest, it's an army training ground, it's big) he said it was great there. (let's organise a unimog day? )
There is a dealer not to far from me, with lots of 404 and other models, and parts still, but as you say the prices are going up!

I will try and upload some pictures, (is this a good section or another?)

Thanks
Shaun

Welcome to the forum fella.

Put them up in the general banter or pictures section. Although anywhere is good really!

Weight wise it wouldn't hurt to have it there when towing. It will keep the mog in a straight line better. Having said that if you're towing a light weight trailer, it's not going to bully a 404 anyway! Off roading though a bit of weight really seems to help. Some sort of removable ballast would be perfect, either in one lump if you have the means to lift it or smaller blocks that bolt together if you don't.

Oops sorry, I meant when towing a trailer to the off roading with the mog on the trailer! (that's why I wanted to keep the weight down)

Moose, at my work we only have one axle left, think it's one they forgot to sell to brazil with the mobs!  :D good for me though! (not sure yet if it's front or rear, have to open the box)
But the dealer near me has some, google v.k. Cars Belgium.

I will try to upload some piccy's!

Thanks,

It's mostly ex army tanks and veicles, with lots of spare parts, (new and used)

We also have a armoured vehicle based on a unimog, (I will take some pictures)
