A lot of hard work. Are you planning a crawl hatch into cabin?

so the transfers arrived on Saturday, spent my past few evenings putting them on the truck, got half way through and got to say theyre looking spiffing 8) shall put pictures up when ive done them all.
not a lot else happening with this at the mo as very busy with work right now :)

Thats exactly our thoughts, we arent planning on going severe terrain, just some muddy tracks and wet grass, so a unimog would be overkill, the 1124 has a nice balance of power and weight, and is also very comfortable and quite. the unsprung weight is also vastly reduced, which is great for corrugations.
its a great size for a camper, we require a bit more space as we need space for 4 in the back, but if we didnt need that we would cut the back end down for less of an over hang.
and yes, i think its ex-sussex :)

Thanks Brian. No, I haven't got a 1124, but I have been interested to see the build on yours as I've been wondering about them as a suitable basis for a camper for a while. I have thought about mogs (used to have an old 404 (ex NATO) years ago), but unless tackling severe terrain, the 1124 AF ticks all the boxes and with the ZF will be a lovely and capable drive I'm sure. A good find (ex Sussex?). Thanks again and good luck with the build.

Hi Flinty, welcome tot he club :)
This one is fitted with the ZF auto gearbox. before buying this we also tried an alison box, but were not impressed, the alison seemed slow and sluggish at changing gear. Zf is also a famous brand for being strong. in the end we went with the zf, just because of the feel of it, it was quick to react and had a much firmer feel about. the ZF also has a water cooled retarder on it, and a pto, although i think the alison will also have a pto as well.
Do you have an 1124?

certainly is, the actual go anywhere offroad vehicle, you'll stop before it does, 2 wheel drive! 8) and yeah, the trail-breakers float, which is what we have 8) ours is a really early one though :)

I've wondered for a while about this Rokon that you have in your vehicles list, so I looked it up. Has yours got the fat tyres on it? It looks pretty weird - especially the one that's floating on the pool on Google images!

we are going to add a roof rack eventually, we have some water proof British army boxes that will go up there nicely, bu tthats the lest of our worries at the mo :P we're also aiming to put a bike rack on the front for the rokon as well :)

Looks good. Maybe add a roof rack to the front to bring it up to rear body height? As well as storage it's a good place for extra lights and would offer some protection from brush for the camper too?

did some photo editing to design the transfers for the cab, went with the original design but changed it to red, and designed some custom stickers for the doors and front, literally being printed this week! :) we get all our sign writing done by Dalesflex signs and graphics, fantastic company, they designed my van graphics :) http://www.dalesflexsg.co.uk/

so, next we slotted some windows in the side, and a door, and also blanked the rear off, dad cut the original lift platform off when i was away getting some bits for the van. there are more (smaller) windows to go in at the rear sides. :P

few pictures of how the interiors coming on,
the white stuff is actually a light wood effect, where the ply is below the window we are going to be putting cabinets and kitchen, and above all the windows and along the front there will be cupboards.

The stainless door lent against the side is going in that hole ;)
for insulation:
in the roof, 5-10 mm gap as the roof is rounded, with 40mm of "kingspan", then finishing material.
on the sides, 5 mm gap, 20mm "kingspan", plus another 5mm gap, then finishing material.

yeah, singles all round now, i dont know what these corsa and vw guys are on about with their deep dish rims, we must have 9 inch of dish on the back :D and its still on the drive, we moved the washing line, so now weve got the whole garden to park vehicles! :D

looking better since you changed the rims. its on single's at the back now isnt it?? for the people who wont have seen it up close it is a litle bit tasty 8) has your mum said where your keeping it yet??

The doors already in, along with some of the windows and the insulation. the doors on the passenger side, which is best for the UK :) yeah, we'll be adding an awning at some point, finding the best place is the thing :P

It looks like the project is coming together well. Nice wheels and tyres - I agree they make it look much better. And the Webasto heater is sensible - I only like wood burners because around here there's wood everywhere! Abroad you may not be so lucky and fire could be a big risk too in some climates.
Where's the door going for the camper bit? On the side? Do you plan to add an awning to give some outdoor space too?

next we got some split rims for it from Arthur Ibbetts, who sold us them for a very reasonable price.

yeah, weve done trailers before with wood stoves, but youve always got to carry the wood around. so we're putting a webasto heater in running of the diesel tank :)

I guess comfort is a big thing if you're driving hundreds of miles in it. I've always fancied a camper and this looks like a far better idea than those silly van based things that you can buy for silly money!
If I had something like that I'd want a wood burner in the back! ::)

How come you didn't want to base it on a mog? Too slow? Not economical?
I knew somebody would ask this :)
the reasons are that we wont be going serious off roading, mainly just fields tbh, so a Unimog is over the top for our needs. also this is unbelievably comfortable, its quieter than a lot of modern day trucks, and its a really smooth drive, no matter what you do with a 'mogs suspension, you still have the un-sprung weight of the axle underneath, so the ride will never be perfectly smooth.
we also got it for a good price, so we couldnt ignore it.
I'm also assuming, but i'll have to check with dad, that the fuel economy will be better.
and a lot of the parts are the same as an 814, so easy to source abroad :)

i havent updated any of the project threads for a while, but thats cause we're working on the 1124 at the mo, i havent put it up cause its not a mog, but we have a none unimog section, so why not 8)
so, here it is how we got it

Next was to fit the new body, we also had to get all the brackets, tanks etc (tank can be seen in above pic) as these were built into the original body, fortunately we found one in newcastle that was being broken, and it was an 817 rather than an 814 so it had the larger diesel tank unbelievably :D
so, we're basically making an overland camper out of it, dad searched for ages for the right chassis, and eventually found it, the 1124, gross weight 13 tonnes and 240 bhp, light chassis, big power! 8) we're aiming to keep it below 7.5 tonnes.
anyhow, more pics to follow, getting a bit late now :P
