Hello everyone. I am trying to figure out the gear lever scheme for a U411. Can anyone post the pictures with a clear view of them? since at this moment the pictures are blured, and the content is not well visible. Thank you very much!

Think I would like them controlled separately, the only reason I have ever heard for a similar set up was; if you are stuck you're not going round any corners.

true, it can be a disadvantage, but on the 406's and later it can be easily modified as they are air operated, so it only requires a switch to engage the front and rear difflock separately :)
However, it would surprise me if mercedes didnt have a reason for making it like this, as its such a simple thing to do.

Yes, there are many times that the lack of steering with front diff locked would be a disadvantage.

do you mean can you engage the front and rear diff locks separately?

HI

I'm a bit confused. Does that mean that there is no option of having the gear box diff-lock and rear axle diff-lock engaged without the front diff-lock engaged?

Cheers

Mick

Very handy bit of information here. It took me a while to work out what type of oil to put into the diff lock reservoir.

What can you tell us about the crawler gear lever that I see on this photo. I heard that the pto gearbox has an effect on the gear lever position for the crawler gearbox.

Hi 411mog, welcome to the club :)

i have never heard of the pto having an effect, but the forward/reverse lever does. when engaging the crawler gear box the "neutral" position on the forward/reverse lever acts as the forward position, as soon as it is knocked all the way forward it comes out of crawler box.hence, to engage crawler box, the forward/reverse lever has to be in neutral, or reverse :) sorry, i should have put that in the tutorial in the first place.

What the gear levers do on a U411/U404

A) Main gear lever
- 6 speed
- 2 working gears, 4 road gears

1 & 2 are usually only used in the fields and for reversing etc, 3,4,5 & 6 are the road gears.
Between the working gears and the road gears there is a gate that you need to tap the gear stick over to get to that set of gears.

B) Forward and reverse
- forward, neutral, and reverse

In order to get into reverse the main gear stick must be all the way over to the left (1st and 2nd area)
All the way forward is forward
middle is neutral
all the way back is reverse

C) Low gears

Move this lever over to the right to go into the lower gears, then use the main gear lever as usual.
usually used when working with implements etc.

an option from the factory was an even lower set of gears operated by the same lever, as i have never operated this myself i will not try to explain how it is operated.

D)2x4 4x4 diff locks

- all the way down = 2 wheel drive
- Half way up = 4 wheel drive with gear box diff lock
- all the way up = front and rear axle diff locks

E)PTO

PTO (power take off) is used for running implements on the front and rear of the vehicle.

- pull the lever up to power both PTO's
only both PTO's can be run at the same time.

F)Hand Brake

- squeeze handle together and pull up to engage or lower to release.

ALL THE ABOVE MUST BE ENGAGED WITH THE CLUTCH DIPPED, EXCLUDING 2X2, 4X4, DIFF LOCKS AND HAND BRAKE.

G)Diff lock oil

remove cap and fill with ATF oil, replace cap.

Some models had rod or air operated diff locks, please check before commencing

H) Gear stick grease

A blend of a little ep 80/90 and a blob of grease.

Please note that through the generations of the Unimog Mercedes made several small changes to several things, please be certain that this is the correct gear box for your vehicle.
