Yeah I'd be attacking that first. Not that I know how good your welding is? You could well be plenty good enough to attack irreplaceable body work?

Isn't one of the mogs yours? Work on that one. Probably best to get really good before you take on something like your Westfalia. Mistakes will be seriously hard to rectify on such a rare vehicle.

That there vauxhall has over 230,000 miles on it, has caused me minimal problems ( the only part so far that i've had to replace which isn't a service part is an alternator and a tiny water hose, and it now needs a turbo) and has done 70,000 miles more than the vw caddy i used to own, before the vw blew its head gasket 3 times, and left me stranded on the side of the M62 on a cold winters night. not only that, but that vauxhall has no rot on it, unlike the vw, which had to be severely welded to get through an mot, and even then it needed more doing to it.
That's just to name a few things. :)

In conclusion, my Vauxhall has beaten the VW hands down in every category so far.  :)

been a while since the last update, still got to get pictures of the seats, but they're a bit grubby now, so need a good clean before i can take piccies (note to self, buy seat covers :p )

Anyhow, the van failed it's mot on a couple of small things, fixed them the same day and took it back after the weekend, passed with flying colours  :)
Also fitted a new engine mount, much smoother ride now, just a tad noisier in the cab though, i have got pic's of old v's new, but seem to have misplaced them, put it this way, it was most definitely a necessary repair!  :o

and for the latest toys :)

Vauxhall griffin puddle lights :D they look awesome, really clear, very chuffed :) To fit them i took the power source from the interior light wires that run up the front left A pillar (it's a switched earth so that's the only easyish way really) then junctioned off to either side behind the glove box, i mounted the lights in the bottom of the door cards, just to the rear of the door pockets :)

Doing a fairly major audio mod at the mo, nothing to do with speakers but with the head unit itself, so will put pic's up when i start making progress. :P

thought's opinions and idea welcome :)

cheers, Brian

fitted a new alternator, my old one died, took ages as well, id start the van and the alternator light was on, rev it to 2500 rpm and it would go out  :D typically it died at 5 oclock at night, just when i had a long drive home  ::)

got some fabric yesterday as well for covering my sub

first job, sand the box, then i routed the edges of the 6x9 holes so they had a nice round edge

then it was just a matter of sticking the fabric on, ive done it so that its seamless

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1060_zpsc445d9c1.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_1060_zpsc445d9c1.jpg.html)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1074_zps4faf1bbe.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_1074_zps4faf1bbe.jpg.html)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1075_zpsb2f679be.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_1075_zpsb2f679be.jpg.html)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1076_zpsed884e4f.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_1076_zpsed884e4f.jpg.html)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1077_zps81da6351.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_1077_zps81da6351.jpg.html)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1064_zps3b8672f4.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_1064_zps3b8672f4.jpg.html)

note the way the fabric goes smoothly around the 6x9 hole. i also bolted the sub on rather than screws, that way the mdf doesnt wear out with screws being removed all the time.

im quite chuffed, looks a lot better than it did.  8)

thoughts ideas, and opinions welcome :)

Cheers, Brian

so, got bck today to find casto lurking around the back of one of our mogs! :O fortunately i knew he was coming ;)
so he was there to see me get dead excited when i found a nice big square parcel :D
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0757_zpsa78683f7.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0757_zpsa78683f7.jpg.html)

so at around 6:00 i finally got to play with it, old (left) vs new (right)  8)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0758_zpsb026f26a.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0758_zpsb026f26a.jpg.html)
you tell me which is better  :D

so had to cut the mounting hole a bit bigger as the woofer cage is bigger on the 1200 watt unit, but after i'd done that slotted in nicely :) and after a couple of wiring adaptions
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0759_zps90e91985.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0759_zps90e91985.jpg.html)

gave it a quick try, couldnt really test it as youre supposed to let a sub settle in, and cant leave it in the van as i need it for work for the rest of the week. but i'd definitely say theres more of a rumble low down :D

Thoughts, ideas and opinions welcome :)

cheers, Brian  ;D

none really, just the usual like informing insurance company, some insurers might require you to get them tested according to internet gossip.
ive heard that the only time you need to talk legal is when you start putting windows right at the very back (past the sliding door) as in theory its then becoming a car.

I've got to admit that I do like the seat setup in the back. Very well thought out and practical. Are there any legal hoops to jump through when converting a van to carry more passengers? Something like that would be perfect for a mate of mine.

this was my last post on friday

just bought a 1200 watt 12 inch kenwood sub, gonna run it off the 720 watt amp for now, amps about half way between the rms and max output of the sub, so should be safe. gonna save up for another sub and 2 1000 watt amps to drive them. so gonna be bouncing soon, then eventually gonna be causing earth quakes!  :) :D :P

excuse the van, very busy at the mo so doing a lot of miles :)
plans are to get some pressed plates with carriers  8)
anyway, saving up for a ps3 at the mo so i can put my ps2 in the van and get a head unit with tv to play on :) and possibly some headrests with tv

Title: Re: The Corsa Combo project: worlds slowest!!! (AKA the VANCAR project)
Post by: Villager on September 02, 2013, 11:18:33 pm
so this weekend refitted my amp, ive put it behind the plastic trim so its well out of the way.
put some shielding on the bottom edge were the wires go so they dont rub
struck it up and it sounds epic! :D 8) better than it did before, think the sub facing forward rule is only if its in the boot of a car, cause the bass in this is incredible! makes the seats vibrate more than ever. :P

then finally figured out where the seat belt anchors go, stuck my finger through a grommet hole in the arch and felt the threaded hole, so drilled by feel on the side with the door, then took measurements of that side and used them on the side without the door :)

As usual, thought ideas and opinions welcome.

Big update, the seats are in! :D

First of i needed to check if this bracket was required for the pivot point on the back rest. it wasnt, so i cut it out  :)

I welded the base brackets on first, although now i know what im doing it would have been simpler to weld the back into place, i'll explain why further in :)

anyway, pictures of the bottom of the bases

welded them in, didnt get any pictures during the process.

then had a gander underneath and was chuffed to see these underneath :p

theyre the captive nuts for the center brackets on the back rests. this is why i wished id started with the backrests first. it wouldve made it much easier to line everything up :)
so i drilled through from the bottom, and bolted the backs in at the center, one of the nuts was right above the tank, so i couldnt get to it and had to go from the top, using the brackets hole as a guide, i got it bang on though even though the hole was elongated, like a boss  8)

anyway, after id got the bases in and the backs bolted in at the middle i could weld all the other brackets in place :) it was pretty easy from this point as everything mounted to the seats in some way, except the stands that the base sits on which were a bit awkward, heres a pic before i painted them, forgot to take an after pic as i was a bit excited to get the job done  :-\

only thing i cant work out is where the bottom bolt goes for the seat belt, there is a cut out for the belt in the plastic trim, but i dont know where it bolts to the floor.
if anyone knows or even better has pics that would be awesome :P

anyway pics of it all together

from the back
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0220_zps6c96313d.jpg)

from the front
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0221_zpsedae3dcd.jpg)

plenty of leg room
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0222_zpse4656e57.jpg)

plan to get seat covers with the same pattern as the front eventually, no rush though, seat covers are seat covers :)

tie down eye for when the seats are down :)

the brackets that the seats sit on, and also note the way the seat belt buckles are clipped to the seats, this is for when you fold the base back down so that the buckles are held out of the way :)

the base pivot points
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0228_zps035e2c80.jpg)

folded up
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0229-1_zps9d9cac67.jpg)

the trim on the other side is the original from my van, so it doesnt go deep enough :( so im gonna mod it so that it turns out like a pocket  8)

the sub box fits perfectly between the rear arches unbelievably, i planned it of course  ;)

it all needs a good clean which is what will be happening over the weekend, also going to be making visits to the scrappers to see if theyve got any corsa c's.

personally im dead chuffed, dont think youd know if it had proper seat covers on  :)

as usual thoughts, ideas and opinions welcome :)

cheers, Brian

;) as i know youre a VAG man i new you wouldnt exactly jump on this, but i have got to say, the vauxhall is a far superior vehicle, its much lighter and more comfortable. my sister used to work for vw, i have this argument all the time, the fact is VAG fans are blinkered :P . when my caddy broke down it had 160000 miles on it, when i got my combo it had 160000 miles on it, its just crossed the 200000 miles mark and all its had whilst ive had it is a new cambelt (due to service interval) and a ball joint, oh and tyres. its nearly due some new brake pads but i can get a couple of thousand more out of these :) this is whats put me of VAGs, with the caddy i had nothing but problems, the combo has been great (touch wood) caddy had 40000 less miles and gave me more headaches :P

as for the sound system, what can i say, i like music, and not just this chavvy stuff that people like to put through their subs these days ( i do like it every now and then though, just the bass is immense :D :) ) i like proper music, such as acdc, led zeplin, guns and roses, sum 41, nickleback :) when i'm on forums everyone associates me with 'Mog's, thats great, but i like to be versatile, and i love working on cars, something normal and simple :) even on the old caddy forum people new me for the mogs,  i just like to show that i like normal stuff just as much  ;)

the seat conversion explains it self really :)

and yes, where isnt there some mog in my life! :D the mog in the background is missing an axle at the mo :O

Oh, better put i had a pin prick hole in a water hose as well in the combo :P

any way, im going to carry on transferring some replies after ive read other posts :)

Hmm, what can I say? Well I'm pretty short of ideas and I do my best not to think. And as for my opinion - well I like it here so I'll keep that to myself! :-*

At least I spotted bits of Unimog in some of the pictures... :D

so, sunday morning came, and i started to strip the back of the van out. first off, the floor came out and all the lower trims.

then decided to fit the new jack mount and first aid mount, the first aid mount is made from some of the funkiest stuff ive ever come across  ??? like little bit of plastic pipe squished together.

can fit these behind the rear panels now cause they have removable covers

    the jack mount
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0203_zps11565f88.jpg)

if anyone knows where the breaker bar and towing eye goes that would be awesome.

    then the first aid carrier
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0205-1_zpsbffc20f0.jpg)

then i cut the floor out, the worst part was removing the actual floor, there were so many spot welds  :o its safe to say GM didnt want it to come out. once i got the floor out though the space frame underneath came out easy :)
http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0207_zps6e655045.jpg

bit of a clean out then the carpet in, again they gave me it with the seats :)

then fitted the new b pillar trims, the old ones had cut out for the bulk head to mount to, so i got the trims from the other van.

    before
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0206_zps968c2b8e.jpg)

    after
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0211_zpsafbaa030.jpg)

then noticed that the handbrake mounting plate was rusty, so dintrolled it :)

    before
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0208-1_zps7ea5f590.jpg)

    after
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0209_zpsbb8b8de6.jpg)

so fairly chuffed with how its going so far, all needs a good clean out.
went down to megavaux again today, fortunatly i was already heading that way. spoke to them and straight away they sorted the job, got the backrest mount and floor extension. also got the door cards as they have a little "arm rest" molded into them :) plus a rim for my spair tyre, dads of to get the imp motd tomorrow so i'll ask him to fit it for me whilst hes there.

As usual, thoughts, ideas, and opinions welcome :P

cheers, Brian

was a slight turn of events here, i'd been looking for a seat conversion for a while and chanced upon this at a reasonable price, genuine conversion  8)

Got all the bits today.

(head lining not in pic, couldnt get it in)
diamond guys, got them from megavaux in notingham, turned up and asked about them, 3/4 hour later theyd taken it all out (brackets were cut out as theyre welded in) and in the back of my van :) found out though when i got back the the bottom brackets for the back rest werent in the tub, i think they just forgot them, but i wont leave a review until monday when i call them. went to see them, fortunately i was down that way, and they got the job sorted straight away :) )

so, got back today and decided to fit the head lining and new pockets :)

Before

After

note the rear "speaker" covers. its much quieter now, very chuffed, like a car, it'll be even better when the seats are in :)
got to decide how to create the new sub box now, contemplating buying new sub, possibly 2! plus 2 6x9's :D will mean running them of 2 amps though, but thats not a problem, just more money :(

anyway, tomorrow think im gonna start taking the rear floor out then its time for some welding! might tig it for better penetration and more control. :)

did the hover test on my sub box the other day (blocked one breather on the 6x9 breathers, and stuck the hover over theother one) and couldnt belive how much it pulled the sub in. so i siliconed it up the other day :D
Before:

After:

I did every edge, including in the 6x9 boxs, i also put some p tape around the sub section for where the rear lid sits.

also found out that it was the tweeter bracket rattleing, so removed them and have plans for remounting them in the front :)

As usual, thought and ideas welcome :)

just a small update,
fitted the new plug, went 8 pin in the end, mainly cause it was the only one the guy had, but it has its advantages, in case i ever fit a dual voice sub woofer :D
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/PHOT0238.jpg)

cut it into the box to make it look tidier, held in with 2 screws on the back. looking for a rubber boot to put over the external wires now, no rush, hopefully i'll fall on one  :P

and thats about it, apart fro i gave it a really good clean and put a temporary sheet across, to stop the noise coming through before me and a mate went to see nickleback.

as usual, thoughts, ideas and opinions welcome
cheers, Brian

right, got my head unit and trim on tuesday, fitted it that night, had to go to halfords for the wiring adapter.
here it is all in,
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120910_175530.jpg)
then i was finaly able to wire my amp up to my radio:D i used rca lead and ran them under the gearbox tunnel trim and then under the carpet to the amp.
then i used 6 core wiwi instead of speaker cable as it looks tidier, to wire up the sub and 6x9s,
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120905_195644.jpg)
i plan to get a six pin multi plug next so i can just unplug it and remove it  ;)
then i struck it all up and listened to some music! not befoe putting some port holes in for the 6x9s ;)
pleased to say that i think ive got the balance for everything just right, can hear the symbols and voices and drums and everything perfectly :D complete fluke off course :D

next on the list is the 6 pin plug and cloth line it, im also going to put some heavy curtains in, fixed top and bottom, to stop the noise coming through, and make it so i can open them to put long things in.

thoughts and opinions welcome as usual :)

Post by: Villager on September 01, 2013, 10:34:04 pm
just thought id tell you all ive got wood!
20 mm mdf for my subwoofer. :D

so, the main targets for this were:
for the box to be removable
for the seats to be able to recline all the way back, cause my dads tall and has it right back.
for the subwoofer to be clear of the seats (not touching).
for the sub box to act as a bulkhead.

so first thing i did was cut the holes for the speakers, first i found the centre and made a cross that went right to the edges, then i used the stencil provided to mark out the hole for the sub. after this i measured 70 mm out to mark where the 6x9s were to go, i had to make my own stencil for the 6x9s which was a right pain! >:(
heres a pic of the doodles on the board
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120810_161059-1.jpg)

then i used a jigsaw to cut the holes out, and after a bit of sanding, and the speakers putting on, it looked like this.
next i made another board to go over this one, so that the sub was "sunk in", this would stop the seats from hitting it, and also provide some protection from elbows, theres a pic further on, unfortunately i didnt get one with it on its own.
then i made the sub box, much like any other sub box really :)
heres some pics, note the board that makes the sub "sunk in"

the rear is going to be removable, so i can remove the 6x9s ;)
next on the list is to line it.
currently saving up for a kenwood head unit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KENWOOD-D...?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item3a6dbbf1fc then ill finally be able to wire it all up  ::)
i will also be making it so its one short strap on either side to hold it in, so it looks tidier.
thoughts and opinions welcome as usual

Right, now to take out the bulkhead. should have been a 10 minute job but it turns out the ply floor in the back was covering a couple of mountings  ::) so i had to take that out.
pic of the bulk head in.
then i took the bulkhead out and the floor, and after a bit of a clean i revealed a fantastically straight floor :D
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120716_151042.jpg)
then i put the floor back in, heres a pic with the bulkhead out.
turns out the bulkhead is to small for the sub, i could make it fit with some modification but im looking at several different ways, so im gonna have a think first.

Cheers, Brian

so, next i fitted the amp, completely ignoring kenwood who said to fit the speakers first, because this is the bit i was looking forward to, you can fit speakers any day, but this is my first amp install :) .

so first off i removed the seat and gave the whole job a good clean and hover.
then i made a stencil out of cardboard in the shape of the floor. i used a jigsaw to cut the wood, 15mm ply, for the amp to sit on'

next was to run the ignition live and the live, i removed the sill trim, part of the b pillar trim and the a pillar trim under the dash on both sides of the van, but realised afterwards i only needed to remove the passenger side trims.
first i ran the main live (big red wire), i passed it through the cubby boxs behind the seats.
then into the flexible wire channel behind the b pillar trim,
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_154805-1.jpg)
after this i ran it along the sill (again through the wire channel) and up under the dash and into the wire box behind the glove box.

its a right pain to remove the lid of this i found out  :P youve got to remove the trim from under the windscreen and then slide the battery over and undo the lid.
then i ran the wire into the fuse box and back out through the gland underneath,
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120708_163131-1.jpg)
i then mounted the fuse holder, i mounted it on top the wire box lid, using a small amount of sealant to stop water getting in. heres a pic of it back together.
ive left the fuse out of it for now until i get the speakers in. i also plan to get some sheathing to protect the wire from the metal edge.
i ran the ignition live the same way and put it to an ignition live in the fuse box as i couldnt find one at the back of the radio, again this is currently disconnected until the speakers are in..
for the earth i used the threaded hole in the cubby box which i think is normally used for holding the jack. you can just see the end of the bolt in this picture just behind the amp.
with the trim on.
and the seat in.
i plan to stain the wood black at some point. gonna be a while until my next update as dads got the van for the next 3 days so i might just put a pic of the sub up so you get the idea :)
thoughts, ideas and opinions welcome.
cheers, Brian

Next i fitted the door speakers, 16.5s three way 4 ohms, i used the same method here, therfore removing the need for adpaters and also giving it some bass.
i removed the door card and cut out the fins, leaving the lip so that it was still strong.
i did have a picture with the grill cut out, but i cant find it  >:( so i'll have to use a before pic.
you can actually see the cut out from the other door card to the left.
i mounted the speaker using socket heads and nylocks, then the grill using self tappers.
i expected to have to strenghen the pannel some how because of vibrations but so far i havent had a problem.
again im pretty happy with the way it looks, but im not to sure on the covers, they look a bit space shipy to me, maybe they'll grow on me.
heres a pic of them both together.
the sound is far better now than the origional system, just the tweeters made a massive difference, but with 16.5s its like a different van :D .
Title: Re: The Corsa Combo project: worlds slowest!!!
Post by: Villager on September 01, 2013, 10:13:50 pm
now to the part ive had the most fun from :)

first of all, i fitted my new tweeters. at first i planned to fit them in the same clip as the origionals, but they were to tight. so i modified the covers so they slide on from the front.
first i drilled the clip off the back which is held on by 3 plastic "rivets", then i cut the grill out using a stanley knife, with a gardian beside me of course ;) .
and tada, it looked a bit like this, but not fitted :D
(http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l524/dubmad1/P120709_191047.jpg)
the tweeters came with passsive crossovers so i mounted the crossovers behind what was the tweeter cover, right at the bottom (black sqaure), useing self tappers.
and with it all back together it looks like this, im pretty chuffed.
Title: Re: The Corsa Combo project: worlds slowest!!!

anyway, i fitted a new horn to the van a couple of weeks ago as i was thrilled by its origional "meep meep", which was rather embarrising. so i went for a couple of air horns.

we have a couple of these on one of our unimogs, we didnt expect them to last 2 minutes as there ring, but they have so i got some for the van. there actually made by fiam so thats probably why there not to bad.
i had to make a new bracket using a strip of galvonised steel about 1mm thick, for the pump and relay i used hles that were already near to the horns well out of the way of any water.
typically i didnt have to use it for a couple of days, neither in anger or cause i saw anyone  ::)
Title: The Corsa Combo project: worlds slowest!!! (AKA the VANCAR project)
Post by: Villager on September 01, 2013, 10:09:12 pm
well, its not mog related, but it is my pride and joy (along side the westfalia ;) ) so thought id make a thread on it.

I got the good old faithfull combo about 18 months ago, after i got fed up of my caddy breaking down on me  >:( :-\ (i ended up stranded on the side of the m62 in the middle of winter on the way back from an install, taking water from a little stream full of stagnant water with a cup and putting it in the water bottle. then giving up on that prospect i thrashed it to ferry bridge services, about 1 mile, and waited for dad to rescue me, not giving a dam whether it seized up on me or not, shortly after that it got turned into baked bean cans) as soon as i got in it i was very impressed, it is light and easy to drive, and also a lot more comfortable and spacious than the caddy. therefor i have come up with about 5 different plans for future combos (including this one) but theyre for the future  ;)

so what im going to do first is copy all my progress threads from vxon (vauxhall owners network, a great forum :) http://vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/index.php?threads/the-corsa-combo-project-worlds-slowest.315690/ )then i'll update this thread when i do something to the van :)

Hello everyone!
After doing a few things to the van in the months ive had it (inbetween all the other projects weve got ) i thought id put some pics up of the things ive been doing. i will warn you all, this is going to be a very slow build :)  we have to many projects to do, so when we have a vehicle thats running we tend to look at the ones that arent, we hate having stuff that wont move under its own steam.
so, the first things we did were get the van sign written, after a lot of of Tcut to get rid of the faded spots from the old sign writing, (i was like popeye after that :D), it looked like this.
i drove it around abit afterwards, hense the dirt around the front arch.
then i drove the van to the graphics man and spent the day learning to put the transfers on, i drove the van home looking like this  8)
i also fitted the mud gaurds after finding it was terrible for spraying mud up the side, we live in the country side so the cars get dirty easily. its better with them on, but not a lot.
