I have a hectic life style! :P
-
Bugger. I didn't see that coming! :D
-
I can withhold some of that wisdom Niel :D

I can withhold some of that wisdom Niel :D
-
Now now boys... Brian you know your dad is always right. It's because you get more wisdom with age and he's got a a lot of years under his belt! :D
-
Cheaky +*** ! Oh yes dad I'll help split them, one wheel and even that one you came half way through the job.
-
i was really tired after splitting all them by myself...
-
Wow that was hard work one rim per night they where properly rusty, down to the shot boasters next and then a suitable coating and then the most expensive bit TIRES I wish you could still buy the old Michelin bibex xm47 they were awsome tires the new xm47 isn't a patch on them still good in my opinion marginally better than the Continental Ac70. The cases on the xm are the same I think but I'm sure the rubber is of a softer material and the old bibex tire had a more aggresive tread and they also had a bead protector as well. We need to find someone that can retread the cases with the bibex patern.
-
Just bought some rims of ebay they are split rims 11x20s not a very popular rim as a rule unless you know what they are but for our purpose the are perfect very strong heavy and best of all can be fitted with run flats.
Main reason there not popular is they rust and when rusty they are difficult to split and indeed these are rusty, done two of them gonna get them shot blasted but wondering what to paint them with, needs to be hard as nails but thin due to the nature of these split rims, thinking about painting them with POR 15 used it before but I think it's best used on rusty metal to adhere properly.
Will put some pictures up when there done.

A mate of mine who was for many years one of the official mechanics on the Breslau is in the uk for a week or so, if anyone wants to have a chat with him about the event message me and I will give you his number.
-
I don't think it's something you have to worry about so much? I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that the strength of the square cab is vastly improved over the previous models (mine). Going over in a round cab is not something that you want to do.
Knowing what they are capable of I very much doubt I will ever push it anywhere near it's limit, but I would be much happier knowing I had something over my head should the worst happen! I'll have a closer look at some of the Breslau videos on Youtube. That could offer up some info perhaps. The forestry mogs had a good cage on them but it takes up bed space and I don't want that.
-
Neil with regard to roll cages it may be worth following the lead of the likes of the Dakar Trucks and vehicles used for desert raids. They have the cage integral to the cab. Keeping the the ability to tilt the cab and then have a roll bar mounted to the rear body which is seperate to the cab mounted cage. This gives you and front and rear cage that are independant. The front cage takes care of the crew safety and the rear roll bar should maintain the overall integrity. If you build a cage back to the chassis you will loose flex of end up with a cage and a cab that try to argue with each other won't you? Just my simple ramblings as i have looked at cages for wagons in general before and briefly looked at the mog however i have decided that i have far more urgent jobs than a cage. As good as it would look!!!
-
I've been thinking about a roll cage for mine. Something easy to remove so the cab can be tilted would be good, but I guess it also has to be three point mounted? Both front chassis members and a swivel mount at the rear perhaps?
-
not much to update on this really, started putting some filler on the cab, removed everything from the sides (diesel tank etc) and we're currently looking at roll cage options, contemplating integrating the cab mounts into the cage :)
-
Oh and did you sort the shaft out? The more I look at it the more it bugs me... Why does it bolt onto the cross member? Mine is fitted to a bracket where the four holes are in the main rail... There's some blue paint there on yours. If that bracket was there, the shaft you have looks like it would fit?
You're going to have to have a look at that for me, it's driving me nuts looking at it!
sorry Neil, the bracket is there due to it being a long wheel base, youll notice this chassis has more cross tubes than yours ;)
I still havent got those measurement but i will get them for you :)
"bolted the rubber boot in the foot well"
Where did you get that from a dealer or make it? i could be doing with one of them, theres quite a draft from mine :)
The boot was already there, i literally just bolted it down, because it was loose :) you could try the dealers though, theyll probably have one lying around from breaking them, theyre quite bad for splitting :P and you cant really make them, theyre a very unique shape .

The more I look at my cab, the more I think I'd be better off cutting it off at the mounts and putting a landy body on it... ;)
-
thanks :) i remember when i was younger the guy that does the body work for ACP told me that when you do body repairs, always cut at least an inch past the rust/rot if possible, that way your working with good steel. :) i have to say on a couple of places on this cab i havent been able to go very far past the rust, and its been a right pain :D
we have both 1.0 and 0.8 mm wire, i have to say though, i find using the .8 a right pain >:( much prefer the 1mm
-
That looks good, it is so nice to put some proper metal back into the cab and have it looking right when you finish.
I recon we should have a group buy on mig wire and gas :D
-
yeah that was us :D tbf its not really any good for what you want, its got a torque converter box which isnt any good for chippers, because the impact is taken out by the fluid fly wheel, hence theres no proper smack with chipper blade. :) and you would have needed a new cab. the top on this one was made of filler :D
-
Arhhh I almost bought this mog!!! I had a trip up to vos to look at it and decided it was too much of a project to make into a work vehicle. That was when I spotted my u900 at the top of the main yard. When I viewed it there was another chap from Harrogate with his father looking at it. Was that you? It did have a shiny new fuel tank :)
-
A blind man would be pleased to see it...
Just kidding - that's not a bad effort! ;)
-
done some welding to the cab, im pretty chuffed with it, especially as its the first panel repairs ive ever done :)

let me know what you think :P
-
it was, but it wasnt worth it! :D
-
thought that filter was off else where?! :D it looks a bitbetter than when u got it though!! ::)
-
Measurements would be really helpful.
Ignore me re the bearing. I glanced at it and spotted the bolt in the bit that the shaft bolts to... It's not the filler hole at all! If they're on their side do you have to remove it to fill it, or are they only filled half full?
-
i'll get the measurement for you if you want?
im not sure about the filler on the centre block, if its on the top im not sure if you can fill it cos i would imagine the plate is in the way, ill have to have a look :)
-
Yeah I've got one... What are the measurements for those tilt brackets on the cab? My passenger side one is missing! ;)
Looks good. The centre block is a different setup to the 406 though? Mine was side bolted to the chassis? That makes your oil filler on the top, which is much better than on the side where mine is!
-
its not too bad, as long as you drive it right. with this its not a problem at all cause its a torque converter, so that reduces the shock on the drive chain.
anyway, few updates,
fitted a paper filter to it, which we got from mr casto in exchange for an oil one. modifed it to a stainless shell since the old shell was rotton out
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1120_zpsb356a204.jpg)
also removed the hydraulics
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1122_zps9fa43c54.jpg)
fitted the pto shaft
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1123_zpsc98f5874.jpg)
got the wrong size shaft on the centre block, so we're going to have to change that :-/
bolted the rubber boot in the foot well
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1125_zps42ba10c6.jpg)
fitted a new oil cooler, its shiny cause we had it fitted to the imp once :D
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1127_zps712cefb2.jpg)
and their we go, most of this was done by dad, as ive had some long hours at work lately. any questions just ask :)
-
That explains some things you've said in the past...
How does the 4*6 gearbox cope with that much power anyway? It's nearly double what it was designed to handle.
-
the om366 has piston coolers, so we would use those if we wanted to, but its a big job, and were not too bothered about ultimate power at the mo :)
-
Can you just decide to fit piston coolers? How would that work? Surely they're machined into the engine and it would be easier to get a donor piece from a different engine? Or is that why it's not sounding like an option for you?
-
woops, sorry njc, forgot to reply to your post, the winch is mechanically driven by the pto (dad has fitted that, just got to get some pics), we're fitting the f56 now rather than the double drum, mainly for space and also simplicity, theres also the fact that the f56 is variable pull and auto spool. its the clutch thats air operated on the winch :)
we are contemplating a turbo, but to get much more power than you would by just adjusting the fuel, you would have to fit piston coolers, cos otherwise your pistons melt. you can get one of those fancy gadgets that go on your exhaust pipe to warn you, but whats the point in having 200bhp if you cant use it all the time ???
-
TURBO!!......
-
We're putting a small box on, then taking the pipe right to the back, the quieter it is the easier the event is on you :)
-
straight through exhaust then? :D ;D ;D
-
Looking good.... Well what's left of it!
What's the score with sorting air for the winch? Is it an air switch, or an air powered winch? I've read about pneumatic winches but know nothing about them?
-
progress progress progress:
dads welded the back of the cab along the top
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1053_zps17995328.jpg)
looks pretty tasty
also stripped the chassis on the left side,
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_1052_zps3be5627f.jpg)
dads also connected the air system up for the winch using a smaller air tank, i havent got a pic yet but will upload one soon :)
people with keen eyes will notice that weve fitted the 540/1000 rpm pto as well :)
-
Ha, as if you would even have to ask me! :D 8)
-
we'll probably try to find a merc truck like the 4x4 1124 hopefully, but maybe a 4x4 917, theyre cheap to come by and lots of the parts are the same as the 814.
i doubt we'll make the 2014 event, but hopefully 2015. i you could that would be great, the more people we know at the event the better :)
ive had a quick look at the ladoga event, it seems to be based very much on the lighter chassis?
-
What truck are you thinking of for support?
Are you aiming for the 2014 event? If so I will find out if a very good friend of mine(Stefan Douve) is one of the official mechanics again, he has worked on the event many times and has good contacts for unimog parts near the rally.
-
yeah, the breslau is literally just one of the events. tbh dad wants to go for the recovery side, and i want to go for the competition, so i suppose its all just down to how it goes :) if we have a major break down we'll just stick it back on the truck and tow it home i recon. therell be at least 2 of us competing, us and tim ibbett in his mog. and possibly some others if they get the time, so for recovery we'll be pulling each other out.
we still need to find somebody for the support truck, im hoping casto will volunteer ;)
-
Brian, are you building your trailer specifically for the Breslau?
It is a fantastic event but very punishing for the support team, I worked as a mechanic/support driver on it a couple of years ago and only got to see a couple of hours racing as I was so busy!
Its a long haul out to the start in Poland with a race tuck, you need a big support truck to run with a mog.
For an even more extreme european event have a look at the Ladoga Trophy in Russia, I thought i was never going to recover my racer from one swamp!
-
meh... you only die once ::) :D :D
-
If that's the one I'm thinking of my worry when I saw it was the water. The truck is well kitted to fend off a roll, but getting stuck in the cab could have meant drowning!
-
Have you seen this one????
'Trial San Pablo de los Montes 60 Unimog pelea y vuelca. Brave Unimog back flip accident '
No one hurt!!
-
Must be some decent ply to take that weight!
-
im from yorkshire, hard as nails round here ;)
dad says they used to have plyboard rims at the factory for moving them around :)
-
I can't remember where it was I saw it, but there was a fella on one of the mog forums who had bought a set of small car wheels/tyres and drilled them to fit the mog studs. When the truck went away for the winter (it was a mint 406 so summer use only!) the little tyres went on and he could drive it into the workshop.
They were seriously bodged on and fitted the wrong way around because the disks couldn't fit inside the wheel, but they did the job to roll it in and out. Once it was in he put it on stands anyway.
You should make a set - you'd be able to drive all your mogs in if you wanted to work on them in winter.
-
haha! well we're trying to work out how were gonna get it out once weve done the cage, we think we'll have to drop it on its discs :D
as for your previous question of how long they last when theyre treated so brutally, theyre fine as long as theyre properly maintained :)
-
Remind me not to invite your dad here. My mog doesn't fit in my workshop either, but I quite like the roof! ::)
-
well, got the mog in the workshop... just!
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0979_zpsa7689d81.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0979_zpsa7689d81.jpg.html)
the roof caught the lintel :o
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0980_zpscfc2198d.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0980_zpscfc2198d.jpg.html)
anyway, dad chopped the roof off whilst i was working in the 406.145
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0984_zps60d2524f.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0984_zps60d2524f.jpg.html)
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/IMG_0985_zps2ea6d9a7.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/UnimogclubUK/media/IMG_0985_zps2ea6d9a7.jpg.html)
so now we're half way to a cabrio, we can just finish the back up, then start fitting a cage, we keep haveing to tell ourselves not to make it too pretty, believe it or not the black one was originally intended as a trialer! but dad put to much effort into it so it was too good!
-
but casto, thats what all the funs about!
i cant think of anything more fun to be honest :D 8)
-
Just watched it again and spotted the round cab tipping over - could see that coming. Funny though!
I'm not sure I could do that with a vehicle I owned? It looks a bit brutal and I don't suppose they last long being treated that way?
-
yep, most of them care more about finishing, theyll probs have a spare engine lying around somewhere, then rebuild that one :P
but casto, thats what all the funs about!
-
i like it at 9.30, even the camera man laughs.
yes brian, that is the only reason your dads taking you, is to get you wet and muddy and then laugh at you ;) :D
-
Yeah... I know mogs are tough vehicles but I'd have thought the best idea would have been to shut it down as soon as it started showing signs of issues? Better to get the engine apart and clear it out than try to force it. Having said that, I am of course assuming that they care about the engine. They most likely have the funds to see an engine transplant or fix as a better option than admitting defeat?! :o
-
dads just sent me this exact video by email, and titled it "got any con rods?!" :D
-
Oh, and that's 800 EACH.
-
Yeah, I'd say he's taken water on, can bend a con rod if there's a lot of water :-\ he was trying to keep it running so the water got blown out :P
And yeah, a lot of them have to much money! :D try searching up zetros Breslau, that'll open your eyes :O
If they're xm47's they could well be 800 quid or more ;)
-
What's going on at 06:10? Taken on water would be my guess? Sounds pretty painful/expensive whatever it is!
And the guy doing donuts in the mog at the end... More money than sense springs to mind. All I could think of when I was watching it is how much those tyres cost! :-[
-
what this beast is gonna be used for 8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6ZyeOGJ13Q&app=desktop
Im gonna be the guy thats always in the water! ::) i dont know whether to plead insanity or not :D
-
yeah, it had a high top cab on it, i not keen on them to be honest, i think they look ugly :-\
-
It was a green one. Looked like it had an air con unit on the roof?
-
was that the green one? or the white 417?
-
They had a nice 1150 in AC Price's a while back. Looks too big - I still need the turning circle to be sensible.
-
this is an 1100 416, try looking at the 1150 416! ;) remember that ideally the crane wants to be easy to dismount, you dont really want to be lugging it around all the time :)
-
I thought your Doka was a 416 for a long time. It looks longer with the double cab...
This one's coming along nicely. I'm thinking a 416 may be better for me now - space to mount a timber crane in front of a standard square 3 way tipper bed?
-
416? this is the 416! ;) you mean the 406.145 :) nope, theyre bigger tyres on that, cant remember what they are off the top of my head, and its cold and dark outside so im not going to check :-\ and the black mog (406.120) has 395's on it (395/85's i think)! so they would look massive!
-
They look like the rubber off the 416. Don't tell me the 416 is on bricks?! :D
-
well dads never seen flat nuts on a 900 with standard studs before (you can fit later mog rims which you have to change the studs, they have flat nuts) so we recon its to do with it being a late mog, but also cause its on heavy duty rims.
looks mean as in the flesh, got that "come and have a go if you think youre hard enough" look about it 8)
-
Can't think what nuts are on my rims as kassy is a late mog lol. It looks good on the new rubber 8)
-
nope, nout freaky about these rims, apart from they have flat faced nuts instead of dished, which we can only think is because this is a late mog. the dish on them is about 8mm thick though! serious stuff!
-
Out of interest if they are heavy duty rims are they the same as mine? I'm sure mine are heavy duty for drums?!?
-
What use will that have on an off roader? Centre mounted winch? ???
Its not staying on, its being put on the 406 145 for the crane :)
you still have to fix the bust pipe for the crane yet! ::)
yeah, its finding the time thats the trick!!!
got some rubber for the beast!
Before and after

375/75 Xm27's on drum brake rims painted in unimog club uk grey :)
Also found out its had serious heavy duty rims on it, so thinking about putting them on the 406.145. also found out its got heavy duty front springs on it, so no doubts theyll be getting put on the 406.145 as well to help cope with its extra weight :)
-

-
yep :P thats getting stuck on the green 145 :D
-
As it had a crane on it does it have a hi speed centre PTO? That's my guess. I remember you saying that you had one to fit to one of your current trucks but hadn't got around to it.
-
i'm looking forward to a ride in this rig 8)
-
twin line (red and yellow) for modern trailers. and single line (blue) for old trailers. Dad and Chris recon to just blank the blue line of though, so thats what we're gonna do :)
-
Eh?! Lol
-
air brakes ;) 3 line as well.
-
I'm trying to work out what the compressor is for
-
casto's got 10 points up his sleeve ;)
-
I don't wanna ruin it for the other guesses lol. Something central that none of ur others have but have 2 of lol
-
take a guess then! :D
-
This one of 2 things, but as u ave said torque converter it must b my second guess :)
-
so in case you didnt get the message, it would have been "no good" haha! :D
-
:) this one would have been no good for you anyway, it has a torque converter gear box, which is no good for running a chipper off as it dappens the force, which is no good for a chipper as you want a sharp smack :) so you would have had to fit a standard or cascade gear box.
got the glass out, should be good for the 145 as thats had **** glass for years :)

-
sorry chaps, iv been away all week, havent even seen the 416 this week, a friend of ours was going to try and deliver it to our house on his truck yesterday, but he obviously didn't get the chance :)
as for the black beast, no progress as of yet :P
-
Yeah come on fella, pull your finger out and get some pics up! We're all waiting... :-*
-
oi BRIAN where are the pics of the beast then? did you get the axel on the black mog??
-
its not home yet! :S could be dangerous though :P
-
Can you confirm moose is alive and does not have :D :Pthe washing line wrapped round his neck??
-
youtubes a fabulous resource, but not for info on how to work on mogs ;) corsa's and combo's its good for though :P
-
I recon you just watch a shed load of YouTube videos on how to do the work :D :P
-
Haha! Well didn't want to rush things, and I don't like starting threads without pictures or progress :) and I'd say we have a bit of experience when it comes to working on mogs :P
-
Lol you took your time to announce it :P not a bad days work either! Sounds like you might know what your doing!! ;)
I
'm looking forward to seeing it
-
Yep, thats the one, bit of an ugly duckling, useless to most people with the torque converter box, but its what we wanted for the off roader. :)
Mums got a tumble dryer, dad always moans about it being used to much, maybe it's cause of the long walk?????? ??? :D like I say, we're getting rid of the landmog a g Wagen, and the imp.
-
Nice one Brian. Is that the old thing that had the crane mounted to it?
I can't believe you've gone out and bought another. Time to buy your mum a tumble dryer perhaps? It must be a hell of a walk to the washing line now?! :D
-
Big news! we have bought another Unimog :o :D that brings the total to 6 :P unfortunately thats one too many according to dad (although in my opinion its too few ;) ), or is it a half to many, as we did have 5 and a half mogs for a long time. so anyway, the Landmog will be for sale soon.
Well, some more info on the new beast, i believe, is required.
What have we bought?
- U1100 416 141
- torque converter gear box
- roof of its absolutely screwed, doesnt matter anyway as we're chopping that off.
- plenty of bits to swap onto the 406 145 ;)
- disk brakes
- '78 mog
- low hours (just over 2000) and low milage
Plans
- roof off, cage on
- Mount double drum verner on the back, allows balance and recovery
- possible turbo
- lighter springs
- Spray it Unimog Club Uk colours (green and gray as mains, with a few bits orange)
- then the usual, bucket seats, harnesses etc
Got it from Atkinson vos at a reasonable price with a seized clutch, so collected it and took it to A.C. Price to sort that out, myself and dad had engine out, clutch off and cleaned (rust removed, hence why it was seized), and engine back in within 6 hours, got to be some kind of record that, got to say though we've done it enough times :D so next is basically chop the roof off and stick a cage in it, then we're thinking about having some fun in it before putting the winch on :) havent got any pics at the mo as it was a bit of a rush to get the clutch done today and my phone went flat :/ job went well though :)
