The uhe can offer portal axles, torque tubes, full hydraulics, central mounted engine, hydrostatic drive and probably more that i cant think of. cant get that lot on a zetros :)

What does it offer that the Zetros doesn't, or couldn't?

cant deny i would like to see merc do there own linkage again, i think theyre missing out on a huge market.
The U3000-5000 are just posh lorries now, nothing more.
Got to say i disagree here, ive never heard of a posh lorry that has portal axles and cross axle difflocks, along with flexibly mounted cab and isometrically mounted sub frame. if it was just a posh truck theyd stop making it and use the actros instead.

It's true that you don't see many mogs at work in British agriculture. Even less so new ones. But how hard would it be to have an optional linkage? It's not like they haven't researched and developed the idea in the past and if someone else can make a living from offering after market versions that can only prove that there is at least some demand.
Realistically what would it take to offer one? The correct mounting points, hydraulic feed and PTO... Not exactly rocket science by Mercedes standards.
I am of course assuming that the heavy series needs this stuff. Maybe it would make more sense if the spec of the implement carrier range was just a little better? What I can be pretty sure of is that the whole success of the Unimog is down to it being a versatile machine. Why take that away? The U3000-5000 are just posh lorries now, nothing more. And the U300-500 have less off road ability than their predecessors. Where's the sense in that?

Why after market though? Surely that's not as good as a Merc designed unit like the old vehicles had? I still see the U1600 as the ultimate mog - I think the heavy series (the 15/17/2100 chassis?) is a little too big for domestic work.
does it also mean that merc have realised a mog is not much good for farm work so decided to not have linkage on mogs??
The main problem is that many farnmers are not willing to invest the money in a Unimog, and also many tree surgeons. Unimogs are fantastic for farm machines as they are a lot more versatile than an ordinary tractor, especially a properly specced up machine with terramatic etc.
1600 is a good mog, but dont forget the 1800 and 2400 in the heavy chassis catagory. :)

The new UHE does have the ability to have a chipper :) it just doesnt come with linkage from the factory, but neither does the UGE, there are companies that offer it as after market. for a forestry machine id go with the UHE :)

As amazing as these newer machines are, it really does bother me how Mercedes have decided to play around with the Unimog. For 50+ years they have been the same design - one truck that can be adapted to do whatever is needed. You could buy a U1400 or 1450 for example with a linkage, PTO's etc and use it on the farm or you could buy the same truck without all these bits to use as a heavy duty hauler. They were all great off road.
Just recently we seem to be seeing this new junk (pardon my lack of respect for it!) which can either be a heavy duty off road truck with no linkage etc or a model that is a bit second rate off road but can run all the tools you could ever wish to run. So where does the guy who wants to haul timber out of a wood stand? He can have the truck that can carry all the logs he will ever need to but with no option for a chipper, timber winch or topper etc, or the implement carrier which could do all of that if only it could make it through the rough to the job....
Mercedes have forgotten what Unimog actually means. They are now Mogs - the Uni bit has all but disappeared and it's very sad. Why they couldn't offer the Zetros as the truck and make a proper Unimog for doing Unimog work I'll never know?!

Seem to have lost their way, the ramp break over angle is very poor due to the bins etc between the axles, the coolers on the back, what is going on there?
No doubt it is a technical masterpiece, but I doubt that many will be used by enthusiasts in 40 years time, unless they are electronics experts.
The UGE (or for the earlier series the UGN) is not in theory an off road machine, although it can be used for "light" off road, it is classed as an "implement carrying machine" and is more for municipals and road maintenance. if you wanted an new unimog for off road terrain, then the machine to go for is the UHE (earlier series UHN) the UHE is come with an engine driven rear PTO (650 Nm) something the UHN never had.

i'm so glad that there was a picture of a mog...... i was starting to get worried when i read the title!! :o :D
yeah its not the best looking truck in the world but i do seem to like the side view?! and if someone wanted to give me one i wouldnt say no!!!

Over all we quite liked it, even the little things such as the wipers above the screen were nice. the only thing i wasnt keen on is the coolers on the back, it only takes one driver whos in a big rush one day to back up to a trailer and put the eye through one of them :-/
