Title: Re: whats the best tree rig set up on a mog??
Post by: Whateverwhocares on January 02, 2014, 01:32:26 pm
hi,

Just read the thread.  I have a 4.4 tonne / metre crane on my 406 on a de-mountable frame.

Max recommended MB gross weight of the mog is 6 tonne and with the crane on it's 5.3 tonne so not much weight for a chipper.

If your only after a 6" chipper get a tracked one and put it on the trailer or put 3 point link on the chipper and carry it on the mog.  I do this with mine and it works fine, means you can drive to the tree, and save dragging the branches too far, even persuade the owner to keep the chip as well.

Tracked chippers are also good for pulling trees over as it's easy to get in line with the tree when a little assistance is required, ideal for domestic jobs.  Mine also has a towball so it can drag the trailer around.

Crane on the mog is brilliant, very useful on all sorts of jobs, especially removals when the tree is resting on the house!

If you want some pictures have a look at my 'hello thread' to see what it's like.

Thanks Tony. I've heard good things about this chap. I was only talking to another U1000 owner last week and he also suggested I contact him if I need help with servicing etc. I already had his number, but until recently have not had any feedback to go by.

I will give him a call when funds allow. Having just bought the mog and received my tax bill, I'm not feeling too flush right now! :'(

Hi Neil

Give this man a ring about second hand bits, he is probably the best mobile Unimog fitter I know (based in Wroughton, Swindon) and he sometimes has spares. Ken Day 07836 386286

cheers

Generally when people buy linkage they forget about the top link bracket. ive never heard of one breaking, theyre not the type of thing to break, quite strong.

mogs get broken and separate bits sold as theyre required. :)

Do they break easily or wear out? Once you've got one I can't see why you'd need another? I'd have thought as many mogs get stripped of their ag kit as have it added?

£180 is no bother. It's when things are £1800 I start to stress a bit! Rare though you say? What's your address and what size spanner do I need to pack along with my torch and balaclava... :P

Yeah basic mog. The way I see it there's little chance of me ever finding £8k+ in one go. I can do a grand easily on a regular basis but I'm rubbish at saving. As soon as I've got a few quid I find something to buy. Usually either guns or tools!

Yeah its basically the same but mounts behind the rockenger hitch.

Well by the sounds of it your you doing what I did, buying a basic mog and building it up??

That's not complicated though is it? Easy and cheap to find?

HAHA!  :D make one if you have to! hard to find and they were £180 a while back  :D solid cast item :P

If it's the same sort of thing as on my Kubota it would be really easy to make. As long as I can get some good pictures of the mounting so I do it right...

Njc don't forget if the hasn't had linkage or pto you will need a top link bracket.

My first purchase if all goes to plan needs to be a 3 point linkage and some shafts. Shafts first as I'm sure I can weld something up to hold my Hycrack short term

I know, but big is expensive usually :-\
Yeah I know what you mean. 6" is a. Good size for a u900. Bigger needs more hp and weigh more. I'd get a turntable over size any day!

So don't load a little mog up too much... Noted!

I only want a 6" chipper. Something like a Timberwolf as they're pretty light, but I'll probably end up with whatever is cheap at the time!

I like that little blue one - very well kitted out for a little round cab!
That little blue one is the reason i bought a mog :) it was awesome but was rather heavy

I actually found it on google, but once I'd followed the link to the site I realised that's where I would have seen it to know what I was looking for.

That fella is one lucky bloke. His rig is just about perfection I reckon.

I'd heard something about the 4 wheel steer but thought they were taking the p***! I wondered if you'd recognise it - I didn't know the guy's name but he's from up your way somewhere.

I'm mostly on domestic stuff so space is usually a bit tight. I can't get the pic up of the blue mog as it was a nice rig but dam heavy. It needed hiab on the back to balance the front Chipper lol. Front hiab would be interesting! I've only seen one pic with it mounted on the front
Title: Re: whats the best tree rig set up on a mog??
Post by: njc110381 on November 06, 2013, 06:44:08 pm
Drive up along side it with the trailer on the outlet side of the chipper. I suppose sometimes things may be a bit tight for that but on a site that can hold enough trees to fill the chip box and more there should be room?

I have seen front mounted hiabs, but they look expensive and they're always on the bigger mogs. How often do you think you would use one? Is your work large commercial or little domestic stuff usually? I think you can get linkage mounted cranes, but just by design I don't suppose they'll lift much at full extension?

Post by: casto on November 06, 2013, 04:40:02 pm
If the front chipper was a turntable it would work ok. most are fixed facing forwards so there won't be a lot of space between Chipper and trailer to get the chip into the back of the trailer (plus you loose a lot of chip between the chipper spout and trailer)

Post by: njc110381 on November 06, 2013, 04:03:36 pm
Why? Just take the trailer off and drive up next to it? Spin the chute round and fill the trailer, hitch it up again and away to go. It's not like a trailer takes much getting on and off?

It's a smaller compromise to do it that way than it is to restrict the back end of the truck with a tool that takes time to set up and remove.

Yeah that's the kind of second option. Slight problem if u need to chip into the trailer as it really needs a blower on the chipper. I'll try get a pick up of a mog I used to drive but not sure if my phone could handle it  :D Unless Brian beats me to it (yes the blue mog bri :) )

Not the best picture in the world, and I'm not sure if I can upload it. I can't find the really clear pic but this is the same truck/owner...

Post by: casto on November 06, 2013, 12:32:54 pm
ok so i've had time to try to work out what the best setup on an arb mog is, but i cant stick to one plan  :-\

on a big tree job my rig is good as i can tow a mittal muller trailer off the chipper (well when i sort the air brakes for a trailer  ::)) which gives me an awesome amount of chip moving. 2 problems with it
                                          1. Shes back heavy with chip in the mog and chipper on the linkage
                                          2. cant really fit a crane anywhere without loosing the chip box on the mog or mount the crane on the trailer

or would it be better to have front mounted chipper, crane on the back and able to tow a trailer?

what do others use/ seen and think??
