Lol u should have seen her when I first got her. I had More ventilation than I knew what to do with lol. It was easy 2 see where my wheel was 8) :P
needed water proofs when driving in the rain :p
Lol maybe :o :P

What's the worst that can happen casto? I suppose the cab could fall off completely? If it does I'll buy the truck off you cheap... ;)
-
solid enough after all that work ;)
-
I don't know, I'm 2 scared 2 tilt the cab lol :o :D
i wouldnt mind, youve got the brackets! :D
And near enough a solid cab lol
-

not bad, the early ones you have to make custom brackets, but the later ones (such as castos) have tipping points on them, the brackets are often missing and are hard to come by, but you can make them. there are a few things you need to remove, the air intake pipe that goes to the rocker cover, the cab mounting bolts (including the front one), its all fairly obvious when you look at it, then as you lift the cab you just keep an eye on everything to make sure nothings caught or still attached. and have a rope attached the cab cab and rap it around something (to act as a snatch block and also to apply friction), we usually use one of the tipping balls, and apply tension to stop the cab going completely over.
-
Is it much of a job to tilt the cab? The only thing I've read about it is to make sure the strap is fitted so it doesn't try to go on over and break/bend stuff? But how much do you have to disconnect before it'll tip?
-
Guess that means it next to the engine then :P :D :D
-
need to lift the cab up ;)
-
I've not worked on a gear box, but fitting the pto box was a proper arse lol. Even now I have one bolt 2 tighten up but can't get it lol
-
I guess it's good from our point of view now as the fitting is easier!
-
Well that's just daft! Why would you put all that engineering into something and then not put another basic bit in so it will work?!
as daft as it sounds, coz its easier to put it all in and leave a bit out, than put some of it in and then have to add more to it. plus its easier to put a bigger price tag on for a handle than half a gear box :D
-
Well that's just daft! Why would you put all that engineering into something and then not put another basic bit in so it will work?!
-
from what i understand, when it says "cascade housing" the gears are in the box, but there is no selector there.
-
I just found that in the manual. 2.2.8 - 540/1000 only in conjunction with cascade and/or cascade housing... how do you get the housing without the box?!
-
lol ok i didnt get that on right then :-\ ???
-
spoke to guru (dad) about the cascade thing and he said you cant get 1000rpm out of a non cascade box, not without revving its nuts off. but if you do have a cascade box it doesnt matter what gear the cascade box is in, youll have 1000 rpm. :)
-
ha, we pretty much put the same thing as well :D i dont know, it might bend the linkage if it does it right :(
-
lol u beat me to it there brian :o :D
-
i've not seen a tractor blow a UJ but seen what a defender prop does, and its not pritty. to be fair the only real thing i could see it breaking is the shaft its self, maybe damage the implement and mog body work. the linkage is pritty chunky steel
-
ive never actually seen one go, just heard some pretty horrible stories. it happens on 4x4s as well, rips the floors out :-\ i dont know what it would break really, i think it would just keep spinning and smash the living day lights out of the back of your mog until you stopped it :-[
-
I never thought about a shaft failing. Don't suppose that's a pretty sight if it goes off at 90 degrees and hooks up on the linkage.... Actually, that sounds pretty terrible - I wonder which part would fail (hopefully not the gearbox)?!
-
not nice to watch you mog getting ripped apart by a flailing pto shaft :/ , its ok if you run at a constantly high hight, but when your running low down i would always recommend a banana box.
-
The pto is about 6inch off center and 6 inch higher. As Brian said u can still run kit off the pto where it is (I have with a topper but didn't look right) but better with the box on. U will wear out uj's fast and I'm sure u don't wanna see a pto flailing round when it breaks lol :o
-
the ujs do allow for flex, but there is a limit to that flex, and youre always better of having the shaft as straight as possible.
as far as im aware the cascade makes no difference to the speed of the pto no matter what gear its in.
-
Ah, hang on. I've found a site that says you get 540rmp or 540/1000 with cascade box. I wonder if the two speed pto that you switch from outside is a different item and the cascade allows you to use the single speed pto for both speeds?
-
I always thought that the 2 speed pto box was a completely seperate thing to the main gearbox. I could be wrong though, it's certainly not unusual!
Why do you need the pto shaft to be central? I thought the two uj's on each end of the shaft flexed to allow for an offset? They certainly do when you raise and lower the linkage anyway, so I can't see the other angle being any different? :-\
-
i dont know :-\ i'll have to ask dad in the morning. ahhhh what it is to have a mog nut for a farther ;D
-
i thought it was geared in the gear box to give the 1000rpm? or is it geared in the pto box its self?? its been a while since i fitted the 1000 box to kassy lol
-
what do you mean? ???
-
i did ad this last time i wrote it out but forgot to add it to the last comment :P
pto still works the same as a tractor. ie revs govern the rpm.
think you need the cascade box to give you a true 1000rpm?!
-
i've tried writting this 3 times now but the internet keeps crashing >:( :D
most big chippers are 1000rpm, i have a 540rpm chines thing which is a bit s**t lol. you could run 1000rpm chipper on 540rpm but its more stress and wear on the chipper plus the chute blocks up easier.
also if like me you get dragged into farm work, having 540 means you can run all the farm implements.
it is nice having cascade, especially now i know how to use the splitter gear ;D
-
Cascade boxes are awesome, we sometimes say we dont know how people live with out them. its basically a load more gears, cascade u900's have 24 gears, or in theory 20 gears as 4 of them are repeated. in super cascade you can go so slow that you struggle to see the wheels moving! this is for field work, (and we sometimes use it to help put implements on, but you probably shouldnt!).
follow thy link!
Pto wise, you can either have the single speed (540) box or the 2 speed (540/1000) box.ooohhhhh, cascade description here :o (http://unimogclubuk.createaforum.com/tutorials/u800u900u1100-gear-levers/) :)
-
I haven't actually figured out what a cascade box is yet! And I thought that the PTO speed is governed by whether the Mog has a 2 speed or single speed 540 pto box?
I didn't realise that chippers often run 1000rpm, so thanks for that! Sounds like I'll need the 2 speed box at the very least then.
Back to the beginning, how does a cascade box work?
-
try fitting that to your linkage! :P
-
oh, do you mean like the fendt remote control tractors have? :)
clicky clicky! :o (http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&sa=N&tbo=d&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbnid=hnUl75KQlcClyM:&imgrefurl=http://www.brushwoodtoys.co.uk/toyfarmbuildingsandaccessories.asp%3FID%3D979%26product%3DSIKU%2520FENDT%2520939%2520RADIO%2520CONTROLLED%2520TRACTOR&docid=_IHAjl-UlDb2rM&imgurl=http://www.brushwoodtoys.co.uk/2007images/6880-SIKU-FENDT-939-RC-1.jpg&w=576&h=384&ei=y-r-UJLfBcW70QXy6YCQDQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=391&vpy=134&dur=3685&hovh=183&hovw=275&tx=129&ty=104&sig=102150975308863346002&page=1&tbnh=142&tbnw=209&start=0&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0,i:88&biw=1366&bih=618) obviously not exactly like that...
:D :D yeah like that, but a little bit bigger

and i still see ur using my black mog in the pics! :o :P :P
HA! you wish ;D hold on, im just going to take the roof down for a bit of a breeze, oh and i might as well fold the windscreen down as well for better visibility :P although i am also going to get the scraper out cause my windows and mirrors are coverd in ice :-\
its ok i'll just switch my heated mirors and screen on :D :P
detaching is a bit boring, guess thats why mine has never been off yet lol. you can get quick hitch systems for tractors but i've never seen one up close. it should work on a mog....
Quick hitch? do you mean the ones where theyre like hooks and you put the balls on the pins first, then lift the linkage onto the balls?
sorry mate forgot to reply to this question.
no its a triangle that fits to the linkage holding it together. it has an oposite on the implement if i'm not mistaken. the linkage triangle clips/locks/pins :) to the implement bit. its like a male to female coupling thing lol. i need to look into it.......
-
those lads sound like diamond geezers! ;) ;D
dont forget that the 540/1000 rpm lever is under the cab, not in it :)
-
oh and dont worry. i started out with no idea when i bought mine. i was driving someone else's mog at work but knew i wanted one. even if you think its a stupid question Ask :)
i know a couple of cracking lads who have helped me no-end in the search for parts :) ::)
-
yeah, or you could have the cab casto has, they dont actually look too bad once theyre done up good and proper :)
about time you admitted you liked it bri!! :P ;D
just a couple of things that i didnt realise when i bought my mog, which i dont know if ur aware..
1. cascade gear box in the mog to get 1000rpm on the pto as a lot of chippers run a 1000rpm rathr than 540rpm (if it has a 1000rpm there is usually a leaver to put it back to 540rpm)
2. the pto doesnt come out in the same place as a tractor. it comes out of the chassis so would need a bannana box (there are a few kicking round at the dealers) this drops the high of the pto through cogs and centralises it.
3. if it has a spider/x-frame. this is the frame that gives the 3-way tip.
4. if it has trailer air lines to the rear
my mog came with a cascade box in it but the rest has been/will be added. she didnt even have linkage on when i got her lol.
-
dad say when you find one tell us, it depends on how far away it is.
The main things are:
the year doesnt matter, check the hours, this can be viewed under the bonnet, in front of the fuel pump.
the body work, make sure the cab is in good condition.
chassis not ****
Everything else can be repaired or replaced.
-
I was thinking when I do buy one I'll try to take someone along who knows the trucks. If it's UK based then there's a fella down here that does mobile services and repairs. I'm sure if I pay his hours he wouldn't mind looking over one for me.
If I find one at your end of the country.... What's your dads hourly rate?! ;)
-
yeah, or you could have the cab casto has, they dont actually look too bad once theyre done up good and proper :) canvas tops tend to go for more as theyre very popular in germany.
sounds good about the contract, do some shopping first though, and remember, just because they look pretty doesnt mean they are ;) anybody can give something a spray job...
-
So it would really be best to get what I'm after straight off if the parts can be hard to find. What I really want is the round steel roof but a close second is the black one you have - that's pretty nice too.
I was talking to an estate manager friend of mine and it turns out another local estate is looking for a woodland contractor to work a couple of months a year on his ground. If I can talk about it and secure a contract I could justify getting one sooner. I'll have to do a bit of homework on the numbers but I think I can make it work. I hope I can.
-
as you say, screen, door tops, roof. also the seats are higher up. no lower lights either. converting them to standard can be expensive, but if you take your time and get the parts slowly you can eventually get the bits cheap. the most expensive things are the screen frame and door tops, as they tend to rot away, you would struggle to make them as well as they have some very intricate folds. also the steering column is different to cope with the raised seats, but i dont know if that would matter if you put it back to standard ??? and the windscreen glass is special stuff as its very flexible, but again, i dont know if you can change it...
-
That's interesting. Having never really spent much time looking at a U900 in the flesh I didn't realise that.
So what parts do you need to change? Screen, door tops, roof... Anything else? Sorry for the basic questions - I'm beginning to think that it may be easier than I thought to turn any U900 into what I want it to be?
-
its actually the same as the black one above, just with the schmidt top on :)
-
casto has an ex snow blower, so hes got heated mirrors and windsreen the jammy dodger! but he also has an ugly cab!
Well I didn't want to say anything about that cab, but...
Hey I don't have a leg to stand on. I'd give anything for that truck, as ugly as it is! :D
-
I've never found it that hard to line up a linkage? Mind you I have only used the cat 1 on my compact tractor and I drop the tools onto a wheeled pallet. That way I can reverse up to roughly where I need to be and line the implement up by hand. Easy!
What's all this about heated windowns and mirrors? On an old mog? Really?!
its a bit more difficult on a mog as you cant see the linkage by leaning back, you could fit a camera though. also when your on site the land wont always be hard or level. :)

we have a heated windscreen on our 411, all the wiring's there but weve replaced the glass for ordinary glass :)

rust me, youll soon get fed up of having to mount and demount the chipper all the time! ;D
Nope, as far as im aware its never been on ebay, we got it about 10 years ago and completely rebuilt it, there were no horizontal panels left on it and not much left of the vertical ones either, so dad welded it all up (no pics unfortunately :( ) and its only been on the road for 2 or 3 years.
were actually looking for a 416 chassis for it at the moment (better off road and more comfortable on the road) :)
-
I did wonder about the weight of the chipper on the front when not loaded. My plan has pretty much always been to carry on the back and switch it over at the job if both linkages were fitted. It's not a huge task, and being able to rear tip is a real bonus in confined areas. I don't want a huge chipper though, 6" would be plenty, so a don't suppose a rear mount would be the end of the world.
Going off topic slightly has that black rag top been on ebay - maybe a couple of years ago at a guess? It looks very similar to one that I very nearly bought!

to be fair i should realy change my front spring from heavy duty to normal. but there's nothing like building a big steel box to fit the front :)
it will be a bit bouncy, it did origionally have about a tonne on the front of it :P

this picture shows the din plate folded up.
-
If you have a front mounted chipper without any weight on the back the biggest you could go is about 6 inch (note that you wont have chip in the back all the time), due to the mog already haveing a large nose weight for heavy loads on the back.
ACPrice engineering in ingleton actually does an adaptor for ducker would chippers so you can change it from linkage mounted to din mounted.
The only real advantage of front mount is you can then tip the body all 3 ways.
Front mount implements are usually removed by wind up legs, or they can be hydraulic.
Schmidt and din plates are different things,
schmidt plate
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/schmidtplate.jpg)
Used mostly for ploughs, although these days ploughs tend to use din plates. also doesnt always have the "toplink" bit.
Din plate
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/dinplate.jpg)
Often called a schmidt plate, its actual name is a din plate. can be folded up when not in use for off road clearance.
The din plate will give you much more flexibility as not much equipment uses schmidt plate these days.
Casto you shouldnt need a tool box to counterbalance, with the weight of the engine, but i know you want it for chain saws and stuff as well :)
Like casto says, your gearbox will last a lot longer if you can double clutch, only when moving down the gears though.
Regarding the pipe over the cab, it goes right into the back body, but can be awkward to put on the chipper. (having to climb up to fit it) 8)
-
i've kinda worked it out as the chip is pritty much loaded between axels ( my chip box is prob longer than most) with the chipper on the back and tool box on the front counterbalancing it, when i get round to building it lol ::) :P. what do others think??...
yeah i'd keep your eyes out as you never know when the perfect one pops up :) just make sure you have researched/ asked about it before you buy. in hinesite i think i would have bought a better one than the restoration i bought lol.
Hows your double clutching as well??
-
I did think about having the chipper front mounted. Only because with half a ton or so of chipper hanging off the back and a chip box full of chip (over 5m3 if I'm not mistaken) that's going to put a fair load on the rear axle? I figured it would handle better if it was loaded more evenly?
All this is just a dream at the moment. My savings were over half way towards getting a sensible on but I spent most of them on the car. It'll take me another year to build it up I'd have thought, but as they're so rare it doesn't hurt to keep looking around to see how the market is running. The annoying thing is that I would have saved a good amount of money by buying that tidy one from Vos on finance - I had no idea the prices would rise so fast and it would have easily offset the interest and then some!
-
These din plates... Are they the same as Schmidt plates? I'm assuming that's perhaps just one of many manufacturers of what is essentially the same thing?
bri thats one for u lol.
din plate only fits the front, so if it has rear linkage on then there shouldnt be a problem, unless you want a chipper firing over the cab?
my chipper is on the rear linkage so can be taken off easy enough. i'm looking at a reversing camera to help with hitching up.
yeah they ave gone up in price since i bought mine.
-

How do you go about mounting tools on there? I have to consider the fact that I will want to mount and remove the chipper each time it's used and I don't have any other means of lifting that sort of weight.
I don't know if you keep a regualr eye on the vos website but I fell in love with the green U900 they had a year or two back. It was near fully restored and came with pto's, 3 way tipper and rear linkage for £8k+vat. It seems like they want nearer £15k now and that just can't happen in my world. Having just bought an Audi S4 I spend most of my money on petrol! ::)

as brian said its the fly wheels doing the work on the chipper. i run mine at 2000rpm spinning the chipper fly wheel on 1000rpm. most i've used in fuel is 25ltr on a 20 mile round trip as well as chipping for a couple of hours.
mine was bought from atkinson vos. she was cheap but i've spent a few grand re-welding the cab and renewing other bits. it was less than any u will find on his site lol.
-
you certainly can fuel the 900's up but id always take it to an official unimog dealer cause if you do it wrong it can be seriously expensive. we dont do it ourselves, we get it done by the pro's.
800's are getting harder to find these days as not many people wanted them because they only have 72 bhp rather than 88.
the reason it doesnt use a lot when its running the chipper is because there isnt a lot of load on the engine. Ive spoken to dad about this and he says its like driving up hill, the more load the more fuel used. hense with the chipper the fly wheel does all the work for the mog, so even though its revving its not having to work to hard.
when driving we get around 18-20 mpg. B)
congrats on the proposal :) that 20 quid could go towards your mog! ;)
the mb tracs are awesome machines but a mog would be more practical for you, with a body and chipper etc...
As an admin i cant comment on any dealers, whether used or new.
Regarding the mog in holland, be careful, buying a mog thats cheap can often be an expensive choice, as it can cost a lot to repair them.
also find out what the specs are first, such as hours, disc/drum brakes, linkage, pto's, gearbox etc...
i might do a buying guide soon for the 900's.
also, front linkage looks good, but a din plate is much more practical. this is because with linkage the weight is moved foward a lot, where as with a din plate the implement is mounted right up to the front of the mog. like this
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/th_IMG_0535.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/albums/a523/UnimogclubUK/?action=view¤t=IMG_0535.mp4)
Note how close the Mulag mower is mounted to the Unimog, with linkage this would be much further forward. also with din plates you can get linkage kits that mount to them (although not so easy to find for 900's but could maybe make one :working: ), giving you a wider range of implements to fit. plus with linkage the pto rotation is wrong for any implements that are usually on the back, so you would have to get a reverse drive box aswell.
But i would say to find out more info and if it sound likes its worth it and you can afford it then go take a look at it :D it'll be a holiday at least :)
cheers, Brian :)

20l a day? That's not much at all. I've been going by the book listings - up to 13l/hr @2200rpm and 18l/100km. Do you run your chipper on tickover or just above? Going by book figures I was guessing I'd get through more like 60l a day?! I use 20l of petrol in my Timberwolf on a hard day so allowing for the loaded truck too (Ranger - does about 20mpg loaded) it could well be cheaper to run a Mog - and I wouldn't have to shovel the chip off at the end of the day!
My feelings about buying one had kind of gone a bit cold recently having bought a new car and proposed to my other half. I think I'm going to have to try to put some cash aside when I can though and restart my mission (I've got £20 on it with my mate that I'll have one before I'm 40!).
I was lucky enough to be winch man with a local estate's MB Trac 900 today. I was helping with some felling and it really got me thinking of what I could do if I bought a Mog. I'm sure I could find work for it and the manager said he would push people my way when they ask him if he can do contract work (he doesn't).
What did your truck set you back if you don't mind me asking? I've been looking at those two well known dealers up north and they're looking for £10k for a 406 now! I emailed a fella in Holland this morning and he recons he can get the one he's selling (looks half decent and fitted with a front linkage) to my address for 8250 euro! It's worth flying there for a look for that saving.
-
well i'm in the same busineess as you. i do a fair bit of tee work with a turntable 6" on the back and she is happy as larry with it. i know someone who runs a 9"/10" in his u900. You can tweak them as well to about 110hp (brian or moose's area) i've run a 6ft topper as well off it.
i bought an old snow blower and have put on PTO and linkage at the back. (there are some pics of her on here)
The fuel side isnt to bad. my defender 110 will use more loaded than the mog will. i recon she runs on 20ltrs a day when i'm out chipping with her.

After reading the Facebook post maybe a 403 could be good too. I like the sound of that - it uses less fuel!

I'm a landscaper by trade so like to think I could make use of one. I do some tree work, run my own towable wood chipper and heat my house with wood so it would certainly be helpful even if a lot of it's use would be for personal benefit. It would have to be able to run a 6" chipper at the very least for it to be worth having though - if I'm going to spend the money I would like it to earn some in return.
I like the little 411 because it's cheap, but I've always had my heart set on an ag spec 406. By todays standards even they are low on power but it's good enough to get by doing what I'd like to. The square cabs are just too big - I wouldn't have anywhere to park it for a start!

they are like a little series 1 landy
:o >:(
working machone i do believe, for what your planning to do i would stick with a 900. :)

i like the little 411's, but they are like a little series 1 landy (sorry brian) they are great fun but no realy a working truck anymore. i'm guessing your looking at buying a mog?? would it be a working mog (for a business) or a personal toy?

411's are great, if you want to do 35 mph down hill with the wind behind you, and that depends if you get a u30, 32, or 34!
its safe to say theyre not the most powerful machines in the world, infact the 30,32,and 34 denotes the horse power (many people call 411's by there horse power, for example we have 2 U32's, and if you want to go into more detail you could say if its an a,b or c, this denotes its eara, the A has a pressed axle for instance instead of a 3 piece like the b and the c, but that doesnt matter for now) so hense, they dont really have enough power to run a wood chipper or flail mower, they are becoming more and more valuable though as a collectors mog, we do use ours to run the log splitter though, and once we tried the chipper but the spout kept blocking because of the lack of power, and it struggled to lift it.
Off road they are pretty amazing, the short wheel base is 67", shorter than the shortest ever landrover, but this was for maneuverability, for offroad its better with the 84" wheel base, less chance of it flipping over or doing a hand stand. :-\
Also when looking for a mog make sure its got anything that you may need like linkage and hydraulics, cause 9 times out of 10 youll get it cheaper than if you bought the parts separately.
411's are nice to drive if your not in a rush any where, we made some calculations a while ago and figured your average speed would be between 25 and 30 mph.
Hope this helps, Brian :)

I've spotted a few of these old models up for sale recently and they fall closer to my budget than a round cab. Trouble is I know very little about them! How good are they off road compared to say a Defender 90? And do they have the power to run small but modern implements from the PTO like a chipper or flail mower?
