I know the feeling about having a set of 405 Mpt 1's for sale I too have a set. They were fitted to my Mog by someone previously with no regard to the speed rating. I found on mine they got skittish over 35 mph. So I bit the bullet and fitted a set of Continental AC70G's. £2500 for the set fitted at home by my local Agri tyre specialist. Seriously impressed so far at 800 miles they have just started to wear the lettering in relief off the actual treads. :)

I can't speak with first hand experience, but give an insurance company an inch and they'll take a mile! A tyre not rated to the speed capability of your vehicle would mean an instant invalidation in the event of an accident.
I've never seen it in a mog situation, but I do know of a local lad who got completely hauled over the coals because the tyres on his Mitsubishi Evo were only rated to something like 120mph when he crashed it. The fact that he was only doing 50 and it's not legal to reach 120 anywhere in the UK had very little leverage with his case. The car is capable and it seems that's the end of it pretty much.

I'm thinking of buying these BKT 405/70R20 BKT MP513 High-Speed (90km/hr) at £390 +vat they hit all the right buttons and are half the price of xm47s don't get me wrong I'm a massive fan of the old xm's and bibx but those days have gone I believe because Europe has made it a legal requirement that new tyre needed to be quiter! Anyway should have a pair of these on my Doka for the Mog meat.

I don't need tractor tread tyres, but they were fitted when I bought it. I've been investigating options which are many. I quite like the Michelin XL or the Continental MPT 80. Does anyone have tales of a brush with the law about tyre speed ratings? What would my insurance company have to say?

Well that's a positive outcome - little details like these aren't made clear to your every day car driver, which is surprising considering what can go wrong. At least now you know and can sort it. I hate to think what would happen if a tyre gave up on you at 50mph+ in a Unimog... I'd imagine holding on to it would be quite a challenge and if it goes over the roll over protection in the older models isn't too handy! All in all it's not going to end well unless you're very lucky.
Do you need V-tread tyres? If not then there are options that offer much better road wear. I'm told in the V-tread world you either want Mitas AC70G or Michelin XM47. Apparently the Mitas wear slightly better out of the two - it's what I aim to fit to my 406 when I can afford them. Until then I'm on MPT MIL's and MPT81's. They're ok but look like they'll not be the best off road.

Yes, I am now well aware of the situation, and see that there is a fine of up to £2500 & 3 points for EACH tyre, and that's before any complications which could arise following an accident for example. Luckily I don't have to drive it on the road, and won't until the tyre issue is corrected. I guess that since my Mitas tyres are very little worn, they will be worth a few quid which will offset the cost of replacements. Any offers? Size 405/70 x 20.

look at what you have typed please.......
You are potentially doing 50mph on tyres that are only rated to 50kph which is 31mph.
If you have an accidnet or get pulled over you could find yourself in some smell doo doo :o

It does rev higher than 2400 rpm, but I think 50 mph is fine. The tyres say maximum speed 50 kph. I can't see a load rating mark.

An indicated fifty on your speedo and the 405 Mitas tyres I would check it against a sat nav but you could have high ratio hubs @ 2800 you should be able to get about 56 mph. If your speedo is showing a low speed and your sat shows your doing 60 + you've got high ratio diffs !!! Does it only rev to 2400 ?
Regarding your mitas check the speed rating it should be g and load rating 136.

The Unimog has 'A C PRICE engineering' on the front number plate, so it may have been through their hands in the past. It does 50mph at 2400 rpm, and yes they are MITAS tyres which seen good, not too noisy on the road. A photo of the front rail gear I removed and still have.

The only guy that does anything with 406 road rail gear is Alex price (Ac price ) ping him a email you never know he may be in need !
Looking at it she's a fairly late Mog what's the top speed? also are they Mitas tyres?

They're the kind of thing that get taken off, binned, and then in a few years time when they don't exist any more will probably be worth something :) and if it came with the din plate (the big heavy plate that sits below the one with the triangular slots on the front) definitely keep that! :P

Yes it still had some rail gear, two substantial brackets one front & rear with hydraulics to raise and lower the machine, I removed these but still have them. Don't know if they are of any use, or interest to anyone?

Bought this one a few years ago which started its life as a German railway machine. In good useable condition. A disc brake model with hydraulics & PTO.
PS Have attached a 2nd picture showing the DIN plate and front railway gear which is very substantial. I didn't have any rail wheels.
