Oh ok. So a torque converter is more like a viscous coupling?
-
The torque converter has no oil flow as such it receives an oil supply from the tail end of the power steering only for replenishment all it is is a torque convertor before the manual gearbox. You guys are thinking of hydrostatic drive, drive from hydraulic pump on the gearbox totally different thing and very rare on a 406.

Well the 417 runs the OM352 engine. 5.7 straight 6. The U90 uses a 2.9 5 cylinder turbo affair if I remember correctly. Dragging about the same power from both engines, I'm pretty sure the higher capacity unit will be stronger and more reliable.
-
Certainly better looking, i think :)
-
The 417 is nicer than a U90 anyway! A lot less electronic kit I think.
-
Just got a call from owner of the white u90 hes looking for £17k .. too rich for me or my work!
-
Possibly, although from what the seller said it has a pto at the front. Im going to see it hopefully on friday, the other buyer fell through so now i have first refusal :)
-
Is there any way you could steal the oil flow for the drive and use it to run a hydraulic chipper?
-
apparently its got a special torque converter fitted as it was originally an RAF tug for shifting aircraft around airfields and had the plough equipment fitted when he got it. the seller bought it ex mod and used it only as a plough in the winter. usual snow plough rotted drivers side floor and salt damage apply ::)
-
Hold on a mow jus taking a closer look I think I can see an oil cooler on the front from a torque converter if you want to drive something like a chipper or a flail then this gearbox is no good to you it's perfect for a winch but no good because it won't lock up solid. I knew a fellow who had a 417 just like that he sold it to a chap in the north west. Still a nice Mog though. And a gearbox swap would be around 5k :(
But good 417s comand anywhere between 15/20k

I called the seller this morning to arrange a time to go and see the 417, its about 2hours away from my workplace. He said he'd accepted an offer under on it this morning but was not sure if the guy was a genuine buyer.... I am now second man on the rope!! :(
-
i agree, buy that 417. But if you don't pass the contact details on as i know someone who would buy it. :)
-
Moose beat me to it. That's not a 406 it's a 417. For that money, jump on it and don't let go until the cheque has cleared! :o
They were the next model to the 406 I think. I'm pretty sure that's the point where the pto box changed to a stronger design. The cab also has a lot more comfort. If you can somehow find the money to buy it, assuming it's mechanically ok, you've found yourself a great deal.
-
Bloody hell if you have the opertunity to buy a 417 for 5k you need to buy it ! Looks like it's been messed about a bit but nothing that can not be put right. U90 lovely little Mog better with a turbo as for the 140l one of the best mogs ever built OM 364la good power to weght ratio long legs very good offroad, getting hard to find now. All three of these mogs are lovely to drive.

This u1000 at AV is what im considering for my works truck(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/10/06/yje8ejut.jpg)

Im not so sure i want a modern Mog for myself, i can see me getting one for my workplace to replace our worn out 4wd kubota tractor.. That leaves me the option of getting a classic Mog to modify and enjoy for use on and around the farm. Im going to see a U900 during the week with front PTO and hydraulics . The £5k +vat is a bit beyond my budget, i might have to sell one of my motorbikes ( i build/collect Indian mcs ) to fund buying and sorting it out!

Ooh. I love the look of the U90-140 range. I'm told they're not the best though. The 90 at least shares the same engine as a Sprinter van! A shame - they don't cost as much as the more industrial mogs and look far more comfortable than a round cab!
-
Thanks for the welcome :) i went out on a bit of a Moghunt yesterday, took a run up to the head of Strathconon to see if the old 411 was still parked up there but it had gone :(
Found this u90 in a yard at Muir of Ord on the way home.. It might be for sale, i got the owners number but i think itll be a bit rich for me!!

Welcome aboard Steve :-) nice looking mog. Pity u still don't have her. Those cabs are awesome, so much space and so warm on cold, wet, windy days.... Just like it was here in York today!
-
When I started looking for a mog I had a similar thing in my mind. The trouble is although the 404 is a lot cheaper, I decided in the end that it would cost a fair bit to get it doing what I wanted and I'd be better off starting out with a 406. What you hope to do with yours is very similar, so I'd suggest you consider carefully before buying.
The 404 is quite a lightly built mog. I'm not sure how it would appreciate having much weight hanging off of the back of it if you even did manage to get a linkage on there at all. It's a good little off roader to carry light stuff but that's very much restricting your uses for it, and as such it's value to you will be much lower.
How much of a project are you willing to take on? There have been some really cheap 406/416 mogs selling on ebay but they will need work, and lots of it! Or save for a bit longer. The mog market is at a point where you're not really going to lose money on an older machine, so if it doesn't work out for you getting your money back isn't going to be an issue as long as you spend it right in the first place.
-
You can get 404 mogs with front and rear pto but as ian will tell you no power steering :o can convert them to electric and hydraulic I think
ian has looked into it more than me I think he could help more
-
There was a 411 hidden up a Glen near here that i nearly bought a few years back.. Might go see if its still there :)
-
I really liked the cab to be honest, really good for checking the ground on steep descents too :) wish i still had it!
Ive been looking at a u900 but it has only got a front pto, i need a rear one, also its a 4 hi 3 lo torque coverter transmission so not ideal.
Tempted to go for a 404 and try to fit a rear pto.. Is this possible? Im on a tight budget so 404's are more accessable
-
Welcome to the site I must be the only 1 but I like the cab on your old mog lol
-
That's the spirit! We all need a mog!
-
memory playing tricks.. yes of course it was a 421 ::)
I'm thinking a round cab U900 would suit my needs/wants best .. My wife and I have a small holding on the Black Isle where we keep horses, I'd been considering buying a 65hp tractor for topping the paddocks and muck shifting but a Mog with a 3 way tipper, 3 point linkage for a bale spike and PTO would be handy for lots of other jobs ... I can easily talk myself into it :D
-
Welcome to the forum Steve. That's a lovely little mog you used to have - looks very tidy. I also think it looks like a 421/U600 though.
Will you be trying to get hold of another round cab or something newer?
-
Hi Steve,
Welcome to Unimog Cub UK :)
Very tidy looking Unimog you had there, I would imagine the mileage was very low as well being a snow blower?
I have to say, this cab variant has a reputation on here for not being the pritiest :D but they do the job and are very roomy, so who's to complain!
Just a quick question, are you sure it's not a 421? I've never heard of a U600.412 before, and it looks like a 421 cab.
What mog are you looking to buy next? :) the 600 is a nice hobby mog, but they're a bit gutless sometimes, maybe a 406 or 416?
Cheers, Brian ;D

Hi, my names Steve, I live on the Black Isle in the Highlands. I traded my 412 on about 5 years ago and have regretted it ever since. I work as estate manager at a wildlife park and I'm looking to get another Mog very soon :)
My old 412 at play

and with the old snowblower bracket on the front ... it weighed about 300cwt!!!
