Thanks for the info Turnip. I think I'll go for a swinging arm with a hoist type set up. Simpler and cheaper at least.
I hadn't thought there would be much hardship in plugging in the PTO to a mounted Hiab. I think could be over reaching with what I can tackle (pun intended). It sounds a bit complicated for now and as you say Shaun it needs the proper part. I'm not sure the Mog I bought has it. I still haven't got it delivered yet. The shed is coming along though.

Ahh - all these questions........ Yes the crane is mounted on the tipper bed! The story goes like this - The Mog is basically a 1956 404, it had a weird one off body built we think for a madmax style film, it was horrible, and totally unusable!
So with the aid of a couple of 9" grinders, it was cut off behind the cab and plated off. Next came the hunt for a back, my bro just happened to have a nice alloy tipper off a Transit, fold down back and sides, with QD corner posts.
I was convinced I would need to cut a foot out of the width, but when I dropped it on with the Fergie..... it looked Ok! I made a subframe from 4" rsj pivots at the rear and a nice big 2 stage ram under (google - turnip7073 - how to move your garden) rear is 2m wide x 2.5m long.
The crane came later, I will check the make think it is Viking, it was electro hydraulic, I just hooked into my main system, Incidentally - all my stuff has to be made from recycled crap - isn't that right Tony? obviously to lift much with the crane it needs something to react against, so I bolted 2 x 1/2" thick 2ft square plates in the front corner and on the bottom one bolted a towball. hanging from the towball is a bit of 2" box with a ram inside - so you drop this leg down, extend the ram to steady the bed and lift away!
Also there is an air operated bolt which fires through the RHS chassis to stop that lifting up. I think it is rated 600Kg? but lifts way more! This way I can fell a tree, ring it up and use my timber grab to load the mog. I can do pics if you want? just say which bits!
If you do use a 404 pto, it is very slow and non livedrive, so drive your hydraulic pump from the engine direct or use a tractor 3:1 step up box (plenty around) which is what I need to do next! Phil.

I've seen the video of the little crane and mower before but forgot all about it. To be honest when I hear the word Hiab I think of huge things that can lift a ton from 5m away. One of those would take up most of the payload on a 404. That little crane setup is smart and doesn't look like it weighs a lot. What will it lift?

ive had a few 404's over the years, and im currently doing another up.
you say about the PTO? has your got the pto attached to the box? because if not, they dont seem to be too many about, (i keep looking for one also)
they are fun machines, and its always good to fulfill a dream! :D

Nice tidy crane turnip. It is all that's needed to make you a good person.
What make/model is it? Looks like it's just mounted to the tipper body. Could that be?

Good considerations.
I hope to lift mainly timber in the round but also other things. Trailer could be the answer so.
I remember seeing a tidy rear mounted crane on a smallish flatbed truck. It was easily take offable using the support legs or so he said.
Might be the best option if I can find one.
Hopefully the pto is easy enough to hook up at the back.
From what I can gather on the forum the weight of the crane on the rear end shouldn't be a big concern. I had thought it would be.

Hi James. Welcome to the forum.
I don't suppose a crane will leave you much of a payload, but if you can get the hydraulic system to work ok then I can't see why not. What would you want to be moving with it?
If you plan to make a trailer too then you could look at rear mounting the crane so you could load the trailer or mog... or put the crane on the trailer?! The list is endless

I may keep the tipper now you mention it. It looks a bit wrong on it though. A bit too big. I was thinking to make an ag tipper trailer out of it.
The seller is to deliver it next week so I'll have a proper look and post a few pics then. Meanwhile I have to get a shed up to house it for the fix up.
Am I on a hiding to nothing aiming to put a crane on a 404?

Lot's of people dream to have a Unimog :) It's nice when someone makes it.
If I were you I'd keep the tipper body. They're very handy :)

Welcome to the club james. Sounds like you have a few plans for the old girl. Have a look round, there's a few 404 owners here with various uses for them.

Hi all. I just bought a '61 404. Should get it delivered next week. Plenty of work to do on it I think.. It has a tipper body and a hard past I'd imagine.
All looks solid enough though apart from the cab. I plan to restore and change the cab a bit and replace the tipper with a flatbed.
If Im still able bodied by then I'd like to put a Hi ab on it. Would be very handy and a dream realised.
I don't know much about Mogs yet but they look nice in the pictures.
I'm in Ireland btw
