Hi Ziggy,

Have you tried registering the mog as a Special vehicle? might be able to get away without the under run bars via that route.

Looks good anyway :)

Cheers, Brian

I had to fit side bars and a rear under run bar as the regs say if  truck was first used on or after 1st April 1984 then they have to be fitted. Believe me I did not want to but they were not exemption that my vehicle could use.

Cannot believe that you've had to put under run bars on all three sides that's the test station Ott a rear underun maybe but the sides no way even the rear ? They don't need em in Germany so why here.
Where in the country are you ?

Well it's taken some time, but I've finally got my Unimog tested and registered.  It's been quite a learning curve that's taken nearly 5 months to sort out. I've added some pictures of it at the test station (I can recommend Handley's at Middleton which is an ATF) with it's new side guards and rear under run bar and a 1.8 ton lump of concrete in the back!  I went out for my first ride in it on Sunday with number plates on and my long suffering wife ;). Went to work in it today and came out at lunchtime to find I've now got a pretty severe oil leak form the l/h rear axle, looks like the portal hub has way too much oil in it, so I'm guessing the oil seal has gone!!

Hi Brian,

No I am not turning it into camper just going to use as is.

Bob,

I'm hoping mine will be here before xmas but the dealer has only just got it into the workshop for a service and check over this week. Mine is also ex german army. I have attach a picture of the one i'm getting. I too have a licence entitlement to drive upto 7.5t having passed my test in 1987. The dealer has sent me the release papers which should help me get it registered.

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the Forum :)

Regarding campervan conversion, to be able to register as a camper there is a number of requirements, we followed this and our truck got through with flying colours:
http://www.campervanlife.com/building/legal

I realise that it says the conversion has to look like a camper, however, our truck looks to us like, well, a TRUCK. I think what they mean is that it needs to have windows and a door, and perhaps take a picture with some steps into the back.

Limited use is frankly a real pain, basically it means you can travel a certain distance (If I remember right a mile or two) from the work site, I believe it's intended mainly for the likes of farmers who have an old discovery that they use to carry a bale of hay to a field. this obviously causes issues for the likes of yourself who intend to use a Unimog for long journeys.

I would imagine the reason it is registered as limited use,is because someone has attempted to register it as agricultural, and the lack of any linkage or other agricultural equipment means the dvla have decided to register it for limited use instead.

Cheers, Brian

Hi Ziggy,
I take it your U1300l will be landing any day soon , I have had mine since 14th February this year , I hope we can share some knowledge, mine is ex German military, after it was released by the military it had about a years civilian used then a German bloke living in England bought he is a dealer of unusual German vehicles and I bought it from him , it is in a "limited use" class on the log book , what ever that means ??? I have been servicing it and fixing a few issues , fitted 4 new Michelin tyres , but I have a problem I want to use it but....
Limited use = no clue what that means , can any one enlighten me?
Agricultural = I keep it up at a farm but if I try to register as agricultural I'm still limited how far I can take it , free tax no MOT, can you travel further if you tax it? Do you need MOT to tax it?
Private HGV first test has to be booked through DVLA and is on a VOSA lane or VOSA test station.
I have the appropriate licence as I passed my car test around 1981.
My goal is to mount a unit on the flat be and use it as a **** camper , it would not have to be tested on a VOSA lane just mot station that can test motor homes under 7.5 tonnes gross weight I believe minimum requirements to call it a motor home is a bed a fixed cooker or microwave and a fixed sink , any advice would be welcome as 10 months after purchasing it I'm still not on the road :(

Just thought I'd give you all a bit of an update . . .

Have now bought a Unimog U1300l from a dealer in Belgium who is going to drive it over for me in the next couple of weeks. As for how to register it, I'm thinking of doing as an HGV and then hopefully taxing it as a private HGV. As I don't think agri  registration would be suitable for me.

If you like an adventure you could drive it back but if it's been stood a long time I'd ship it back, as long as you've got all the paperwork registering in the UK with the DVLA should be simple enough, have a look at there website, registering as ag may be hit and miss are you arb or agricultural business this helps if you can prove its final use, or are you going to turn it into a camper ?

As the title says I've decided to buy a U1300 from Europe as its seems the I can get one cheaper than buying one that's already over here. I have a few question i'm hoping you guys could answer.

I looking at buying from Belgium, if I did how hard would it be to sort paperwork so I could drive it back home ? Or would it be easier to pay for it to be delivered ?

Would it be easy to register in this country ?
