Just sent the application off, anyone who wants to be part of the working demo just put "Unimog Working Demo" on the application, a good place to put it is above "Brian Chester".
If you have returned your form as part of the working demo, reply to this thread and I'll create a group message.

The mog has grown to be a far superior vehicle for the job

I think the Land Rover, for what it is, is a nice machine. it's simple, and easy to fix.
What bugs me is when people try to say that the Land Rover is superior to the Unimog, Looking at the technicalities, the Land Rover is only superior in one way,and that is road speed.

The Unimog.
First built in 1948, basic design in 1945.
A universal vehicle built with the following:

Rear linkage
Front, rear, and side PTO
flexible chassis
torque tubes
portal hubs
selectable 4x4
cross axle diff locks
coil springs
high and low box
All round drum brakes
Full 6 speed synchromesh gear box.

The Land Rover
First built in 1948.
A multi purpose vehicle built with the following:

I don't believe they came with linkage, if someone has evidence to show this was a factory option please let me know.
No side PTO
No flexible chassis (built from 2mm steel, which was welded together at the edges to make a box)
No torque tubes
No portal hubs
No selectable 4x4, only free wheeling hubs on the front
No cross axle diff locks
No coil springs (they were still using cart springs till 1970 when the range rover was brought out! The series/defender didn't change until '83.)
High and low box
All round drum brakes
No synchromesh in 1st and 2nd, only 3rd and top.

How anybody can say that the Land Rover was or is a comparable machine to the Unimog I don't know. The 406.145 outside here is a 1975 model and it's got disc brakes (Unimog's had disc brakes well before any trucks) which is still impressive when you think that the range rover was the first landy to have disc brakes in 1970.
The unimog had coil springs in 1948! that was impressive for any vehicle in those days, Land Rover only started bragging about coil springs in 1970.

So yes, the Unimog has developed into a far superior machine for the job, the only thing is, it always has been.

Universal car device (Unimog) or as I like to call it, jack of all trades master of none ! Anyway this thread is about a working demo at Newby hall. every year we sit there with a bear and say, next year we'll have to do a working demo. So if whe're gonna do it, nows the time to sort ourselves out Casto, Brian, me, Lurky,s dad cos lurky will be there with his grey furgison 😀
Even if it's having kit on the back and it's not used its a way of showing what we use our Unimogs for.

The Land Rover was the British version of the Unimog. Built for agricultural tasks at around the same time period. The mog has grown to be a far superior vehicle for the job but it doesn't take away the role that the old Landy played in post war British agriculture.

I think every working tractor rally should have at least of couple of Landys. Ideally with the belt PTO running old kit like they used to. Something like a mill or pump

Yes, there's working fine and then there's "working" as in doing a job day in day out

What on earth has that got to do with doing a working demo?

3 of the 5 mogs we have work fine, the 2 that don't are being built :) the 406 is the highest speck you could get out of the factory, and the 1450 has pretty much every option you can fit at the same time except for cti.
Except for the odd oil leak, they work fine :)

Ah, well that's were the Moose household and Casto come in. Their mogs do work. They've got tons of kit between them. Not that I'm jealous or anything...

Hope I'm not pointing out the obvious but for a working demo the mog needs to actually work.

Had a chat with these bods, apparently just fill the form out as usual and tick the box next to working demo, then write underneath that you want to be with the unimog working demo. He said that for things like chainsaw operation the operator needs a ticket, so casto best not be ill :P
