Introduce Yourself / Re: RSL v U1500
« on: June 05, 2016, 08:37:37 am »
Welcome RSL!
Nice looking Mog. Just the thing to keep you out of mischief forever more :)
We're proud new owners too, just been learning the fine art of pop-riveting plates into the cab floor! That 3-step unit sounds interesting, got a picture?
Cheers and welcome once again,
Rob & Sue

At least it seems not to have really got to the support members :) They are dusty with rust powder from the surrounding mayhem but as yet not nibbled themselves.

Well, we were just working away today, minding our own business, and we drilled out the rivets holding the driver's door sill trim in place so we could get at the "little bit of rust" on the sill.
The sill rust was fine, just a teeny hole that will sand down just fine and get Kurust-ed and then filled and painted.

However, on curiously lifting the stuck-down floor lino, a horrible landscape of craters, flakes and holes was revealed! The Rust Monster has eaten our cab floor!

Halp!

Seriously... neither of us weld and we're heading for a First HGV test in the next couple of weeks. Advice? Aid?

Just wondered if anybody could recommend a good ball joint splitter, as all the ones we have access to are too small, or broken? Got to do a couple of boots for the test tomorrow.  ::)

Cheers,

Hmm very nice! I wish I had seen this post about a sale sooner.

When you are at Machine Mart pick up a 3/4 knuckle bar as well. The breaker bar in the Halfords set will not be long enough for many things that you need the 3/4 sachets for.  :)

If it's the Halfords sale you meant, Paul, it's still half price on all their Advanced Pro socket sets :)
If it's the Machine Mart one you meant, well, you know those are like buses, another one will be along in a week or so!

Well done to you 2, im sure your like big kids at Xmas! Must be a relief to get it on home turf now

You said it Casto! We keep getting big silly grins on our faces every time we look up the garden. NOVA all done and HMRC are happy, just awaiting confirmation that it's on DVLA system now so we can get it tested and plated, then registered. Oy paperwork!

:D

Well, we did it!
Clever Hans the fire engine has entered the UK on this morning's DFDS ferry from IJMuiden to Newcastle.
A heavy vehicle haulage firm winched him promptly on to their recovery truck and whisked him over to Hexham:

Our first Mercedes-Benz!

Got a new car in the drive!

Everything went really smoothly, despite neither of us having taken ANY vehicle on to a ferry before, let alone a Unimog. Big thanks to Andy Coudyser of VK Cars in Belgium, who trailered Hans up to IJMuiden to meet us and provided such good customer support!

More pics - and no doubt more questions - very soon!

Does anybody else have the downloaded manual file - you have to put in your VIN number, engine number etc and then you can look at masses of different stuff re your particular vehicle ... the only trouble is, we only have a very hazy idea how the whole thing works. What does it mean by "major assembly"?

Cheers,

Rob & Sue

Well, sorted ourselves out with some vehicle-appropriate gear today, courtesy of Halfords sale :) - plus trade card...

Needed to update my toolbox a bit, so thought this was a good opportunity to get some Mog-appropriate gear.

21-piece 3/4" drive socket set, Halfords Advanced Professional range (goes up to 50mm), and a 25-piece combination spanner set (up to 32mm). Good-looking, nice solid sockets, and decently hefty bars and spanners - just a shame about the shoddy plastic box the sockets come with! Most buyers who left reviews of this product said the same: great tools, crappy box.

Waiting for Sunday and the VAT-free night at Machine Mart, as the Halfords socket set doesn't come with a ratchet.

The socket set retails at £200 normally. £100 in the sale, and with trade card got it for £80.  8) Liking the sound of the lifetime guarantee, too.  I've never had any problems with my other Halfords Professional set - me and my Dad smashed a few components and they were replaced without question. Hoping these sets will be just as useful :)

What a nice sparkly haul, eh? If anybody's interested, the link to the socket set is below:

Other Items / WANTED: Rooftop tent
« on: April 14, 2016, 11:21:20 am »
Anybody fed up of climbing the ladder to go to bed? We're looking for an economically-priced but good working order rooftop tent/expedition tent to go on top of our U1300L 37 fire engine, seeing as how the builders have kindly given us a box back you can walk around on, with nice roof bars and such.
PM us if you have anything suitable!

Cheers,

Rob & Sue :)

General Banter! / Mog Insurance
« on: April 11, 2016, 10:04:50 pm »
You may all have your insurance needs perfectly worked out already, but just in case this might be useful to anybody struggling to insure their Unimog - we just spent several days having fruitless and frustrating conversations with lots of different insurance firms and brokers regarding getting insurance for our 1981 U1300L 37.
Excuses ranged from "doesn't meet our minimum entry requirements" - whatever that might mean! - to "we only insure commercially, and by the way, do you have an operator's license?" (answer: no, I don't need one)... not forgetting the classic "What's a Unimog?" or our personal fave, uttered in tones of compete bewilderment: "you want to insure a 7.5 tonne truck... for personal, social and domestic use...?" (but of course!)
One company refused to insure us unless we used the truck at least partially for commercial purposes... the next one refused to insure us if we DID use it for commercial purposes!
And then, finally, there was Footman James. After consultation with her manager, the call handler came back to confirm that yes, we could be insured by them, and yes, they HAD heard of Unimogs, right on down the line to a very nice price tag of less than £300 per year Comprehensive cover, which includes legal protection and Agreed Value. It's a Vintage Commercial Vehicle policy. We are very happy to have found it. :)

Hi Rob,

If you send me your vin number I can certainly look at getting you a date card, however with it being a fire engine I might not be able to (it may be similar to the military mogs where they're not listed)

Also in regards to running veg, the OM352 although not the best, will run veg oil happily (I'll wait for moose to confirm this).
If you want to go the whole hog take the OM352 out and replace it with the OM312, perfect for veg as it has pre-combustion chambers :)
The 352 will run on Veg but you need to run the engine on a vegetable based engine oil and change it at half intervals the issue being the oil passes the rings and needs to blend with the oil in the sump. If you need more info let me know and I can put you in touch with a man that can.

Yes please! :D

The only thing you need to do is tweak the pump, go to someone like ac price as he has a dino and can do it right your engine may have piston coolers fitted but even without the turbo will get you up hills nicely. Your high axle ratios will kill her up big hills.
What are you going to do with her is she just for fun ?
Moose

Cool, thanks for the fuel pump/turbo info. What would be a good way of getting more oomph for hills without actually fitting a turbo? Or do you mean tweak the pump even without adding a turbo?

We are getting the truck for a number of reasons - one, we are aiming to move to South Shropshire into the hills there and we wanted something which would be fun and also practical for getting us and dogs around on and off road in all weathers. Two, we are in the process of setting up a Social Enterprise where we will be using dogs in a Christian-based therapeutic programme to promote healing in sufferers of PTSD (caused by combat or abuse), and also in youth training; the pups will 'graduate' and go on to various service homes afterwards - the truck can carry 9 people in the cab including the driver, and we plan to outfit part of the rear box with dog transport cages; and three, because we love Mogs and always wanted one! :D :D

You could put a turbo on it that would make a big difference
Moose
Not sure yet about turboing it. Don't you have to upgrade the fuel pump and injectors if you do that? If we're going to go to that much trouble, it might be worth just changing the engine at some point for the OM352A (unless of course that doesn't come with the upgraded pump and injectors either, i don't know!) :D
More than happy to be corrected on this, as this is our first Unimog.
Cheers,
Rob & Sue
