Thank you moose, yes the prices are quite reasonable i thought. Shipping is huge because of the weight of these things. I have  a lot of learning to do. Just gave it a quick once over on the weekend as I had other things to do around the house. I found loose bolts around the front left brake protector plate, wet roof lining. We have had a wet few days and i suspect the water is making its way in from the roof hatch mounting bolts. I've removed the roof lining and the backing board has suffered from water damage. I will keep it and use it as a template to make a new one. The motor starts up really easy but is a bit smokey with a strong diesely kind of smell. I'll start with draining the fuel and changing the fuel filters as there is am old service sticker on the windscreen that says the next service is due in April, 2018! I hope it is just stale fuel. A quick drive down the street had me struggling with the gear change. It seemed to be stuck in the 3-4 shift sector and then I was able to engage the 5-6 and then 7-8?  Still the 1-2 evades me. Not sure if the shift mechanism is sticking from lack of use or operator error. It is fitted with a rubber cushioned  pintle hook for towing and has air lines running to the rear of the truck for air trailer brakes I would say. A lot of learning to do on this new adventure. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the club frank 👍 the prices on the ex ADF Unimogs is unreal compared to euro prices I’ve seen a few winches for sale off those but the cost of transport is expensive to ship to Uk.
I would recommend changing your transmission oil to 75/90 sun as a lot of military Unimogs were filled with single grade oil for simplicity. Also find some 395/85r20 tyres and Hutchinson rims will make a massive difference to your Unimog
Lastly when you say caravan make sure you fit a cushioned tow ball as recommended my Mercedes your Unimog has very hard suspension on the rear and can break an a frame on a caravan.
Enjoy 👍

Very good idea here. Works off the same principle as a vice only on a larger scale. I'm going to give this a go.
Thanks Claran.

Hi all,   Frank here in Australia. Just got my Unimob U1700l ex ADF delivered today. Purchased from auction without being able to inspect it due to all the hoopla going on at the moment. Motor Mechanic for 40 years and now in Retail selling auto parts.  Plan to give it a good going over then hope to tow a caravan around Australia. If they don't open the borders by then I'll just drive straight through them! ;D    Hoping to get ideas, hints and tips from other members and also report on anything I find may be of help to other members.

I fInally found some 24v H4 LED headlight bulbs which fit within the existing headlight units on my U1300L.  What an improvement !!

I think the difference is clear, but the photo really doesn’t do it justice.
