The shooting thread
« on: January 27, 2014, 10:14:19 pm »
As Mick brought this up some time ago and there are a few of us who do it, I thought it would be a good idea to post this up. So, who's been out recently? What have you been after and have you got anything getting the better of you?

My year has been pretty rough so far. I suspect we have poachers on my main deer ground, someone is lamping the local foxes and missing so they are a mare to catch up with and my drilling isn't ready yet! All in all it's a tough time at the moment. I'm going to be looking for a night vision add on at the shooting show so I can beat the foxes - it's lambing time soon so I really have to get on top of them. I just bought a new .243 so this winter is going to be a big test for it, but I can't help thinking it could be too much gun for my foxing needs.

That's easy, just shoot from inside and you've got no choice but to hit it somewhere! :D

I'm thinning down my collection a bit. Now the initial excitement of "proper gun" ownership is wearing off I can be a bit more sensible. Current collection is 2x .22lr (a semi and a bolt action), a .17 Hornet, .223, .243, 7mm-08, 8x60R drilling (made in Germany in 1943, it's a side by side 16 bore shotgun with a rifle barrel underneath!) and last of all the rifles my .338 Win Mag. Then I have a Hushpower .410 shotgun and a Beretta semi auto 12 bore. I'm selling the semi auto .22, .223 and 7-08 which will still leave me with a rifle for every application in the world apart from the big 5. I have no interest in shooting them anyway.

I haven't shot a deer since February last year. Before that it wasn't unheard of for me to be taking at least one per week. Part of the drop is down to me not getting out so much, and on the place where I actually have a rough cull plan the deer have just disappeared. We keep finding piles of hair and bits of bone so my guess is that someone is dogging them at night.

Some collection there! Like the drilling, find it odd that the Germans were making them in 1943, thought that they would have had better things to do with the arms industry.
I would love a 338 Lapua Magnum, but no chance of getting one here, the Police are not happy with the collection as it is, but as long as I keep shooting them and keep my nose clean there is nothing they can do.
My pet hate at the minute is the hooded crows, they know just how far away they need to be to be safe! Will have to start using the 223 for them.
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

A good point re the drilling date - I'll double check my facts with the serial number because it does seem odd! It was also manufactured as 8x60 because the military 8x57 was under strict control and not allowed for civilian use. Their answer to that was to create a new calibre that was allowed, but would still fire 8x57 ammo! At least that is my understanding of it.

.223 is good for crows. I assume a hooded crow is similar to our regular ones? If so a good 40-50gr bullet will fluff it up nicely! That or a 55gr from a .243!

German Beer! plus guiness, theakstons, john smiths origional, bombardier, scrumpy jack, k's, merry down, in fact, lets just create a beer thread...

Regarding a pretty lady thread, as long as they're wearing unrevealing clothes,

Here we go... He's pointing out "the rules"...  ::)

Pretty with clothes on. Where do I start?!

Edit... And beer is so restrictive. We need an alcohol thread so I can chip in. Beer is only good for cooking! :o

Sloe gin is the way forward, or Whisky. I'm currently making a raspberry vodka from 95% (190 proof) polish spirit... That'll sort these kids out at the mog meet! :D
