Got one at last!
« on: November 10, 2013, 09:40:15 am »
It still hasn't completely sunk in yet - but I got up this morning, looked out of the window and there's a scruffy but lovely bright yellow 406.121 sitting on the drive Yey! And it didn't even come at a time when I thought I would be getting one! Not even sure now how or why it's here?! It just appeared unexpectedly, for sale locally and I had to have it. It's as simple as that really.

Anyway. I went and picked it (her, him, the mrs thinks I should name it) up yesterday afternoon and took my first driving lesson around the seller's yard. Well that was an experience - so many bloody gear sticks! At least the one that matters is fairly obvious by being bigger than the rest! ???

Then it was off home, in the dark and rain back to base. I got to the end of the seller's lane and was beginning to wonder what I'd done! The steering wheel is on the wrong side of the truck and the gearbox... Well is it a gearbox? I was thinking to myself "this is like driving a bloody tractor... Oh, hang on a minute, it is a tractor stupid!".

It took me about half an hour to get back. The speedo is broken but my other half only beat me back by five minutes in the S4 so I must have done pretty well! She drives like an escaped mental patient some days.... and I felt like one driving this thing home! The first ten minutes were pure pain, followed by acceptance for a bit, and then a deep sadness as I drove up my road. I was home, I had to get out and leave it. Strange how they grow on you isn't it!

Now I need to figure out where to start. There's a rusty hole in the passenger side front wing which needs getting on top of. And I suppose a full service would be a good idea as I don't know what's been done when. It also doesn't have a reversing light that I can find? Is that right? I want one (or two) so will have to work out some sort of switch if there isn't already one here somewhere?!

Pictures...

I suppose the first thing to do is wash it?! ::)

Did I see that one on ebay recently? the truck style tyres on front seem to ring a bell.
Looks not too bad, your family will forget how you look you`ll be spending all spare time playing with your new toy :)

Looks a good base wagon, hopefully I will be following in your footsteps soon, the wife thinks finishing the house should take priority though!

It was on ebay - the seller named his price to pull it and on first impressions we thought that it wasn't worth it. I went to view anyway (I've never seen a 416) and when I got there it looked too short.... I've still never seen a 416 because it wasn't what the seller said it was! He also listed it quite badly - the hours were lower than he thought and the spare agricultural tyres included were part worn Continental AC70's...

It is about time I got one. I've spent enough time talking about it! Trouble is now I'll be talking about it even more - there's so much to do and so much to learn!

My other half was going to buy me a toy one until I told her to save her money and buy me something for the real one when I finally managed to get it. I think seats may be a start - they're a mess!

Mick - We've got house plans for the spring. Just tell her it's a great vehicle to take loads of **** to the tip in - you'll save a fortune on skip prices. Mine went for that excuse quite nicely! ;)

Hi Nic,

Hello to all you Moggers.

Well done chum, found one at last !  you’ll have no free time now.

I am the bloke with the green U 1300L – now black- we met at the clay pit near Chichester a couple of years ago or more. Hope you will not be camping in the back too often !

Regards  Rob

Hi Rob. Welcome to the forum, it's great to see you here! How's life treating you? Still abroad? Poland if I remember correctly?

It's taken a while since that initial plan of trying to get one, but as always with life the bank balance wasn't on side for some time. It's not really on side now, but this one came up so close to home that I wasn't going to let it go!

I reckon I could sleep in the back - there's loads of room. Not compared to yours, but big enough for a short bloke like me! :D

Fantastic! Looks like a great base,

Few things I've just noticed since talking to you,

-1 it's still got the origional sides, nice touch, you can't buy them any more.
-2 it's got head light guards, again, nice touch, and quite expensive.
-3 it's got a sliding rear window, they're hard to come by.

I can't tell, but it looks like a round steel tank (not an 814 tank as originally thought) they were fitted for forestry use (especially by werner)

Dad says that not only can you get a repair patch for th front, but you can get the full front cross member :) including the bend.

I'd get rid of those horrible wing mirrors as well personally  :-\

Is that your workshop?

As for reverse lights, it's got 2 yellow intermittent ones on the back! :D to turn them on press the red switch with a triangle on it  ;) or you could always fit a white one with a separate switch if you really want to :P bit boring though  :D

I'm gonna try and get a video tutorial done for the cascade box soon, so should be able to help you out then, might also get one done for the torque converter box as well  :o

Oh, and welcome Rob :)

Before I go on I feel I should add that there's a video of Rob's mog in reply 6 of the mog videos post. Not even sure if you've seen it Rob? It was taken at the off road day.

Back to mine... Yes, the tank is round. I hadn't really taken any notice before but that's not standard is it?!
Links to the repair bits would be fantastic if you have them. I looked on ebay.de but could only find repair sections for the doors.
The mirrors are pants. The passenger side one moves around all by itself and every time you open the door they get knocked out of position!
No that isn't my workshop... I wish! You could fit my whole house and garden in there twice over. It was the seller's.
I really do need reversing lights. My driveway isn't that wide and if I send it into next doors garden by mistake on night they may not be too impressed!
A cascade tutorial would be fantastic. I can't figure out what the hell to do with it. To be quite honest I don't think I'll ever use it!

I might just do that. It's a simple fix to a problem that isn't that huge. It would be nice to switch it from the gearstick though. I'm sure it can't be too hard to sort out.

They were fitted by Werner really, and are definitely worth having, the theory is, with them being round nothing can snag on them, and they're very hard to dent  :)
Workshops got some nice gear in there  8)
I'll have a look for the repair part, but I'm not promising anything!

Daft question but did they come as standard with reverse lights?

By the time I have a Chipper on the back a reverse light under the body won't be much good ;)

They could be ordered from the factory, but we're fitted with a separate switch, as there are no direct bolt holes for the switch, you could probably make a bracket with a bit of effort :)

When it comes to beating the **** out of a piece of plate with a ball pein hammer I'm quite good. I can make most things as long as I've got a hammer big enough to bend what I'm hitting!

If there wasn't a genuine factory part I'm not sure I should? I want to keep it as original as possible.
