If that's the one I'm thinking of my worry when I saw it was the water. The truck is well kitted to fend off a roll, but getting stuck in the cab could have meant drowning!

Brian, are you building your trailer specifically for the Breslau?
It is a fantastic event but very  punishing for the support team, I worked as a mechanic/support driver on it a couple of years ago and only got to see a couple of hours racing as I was so busy!
Its a long haul out to the start in Poland with a race tuck, you need a big support truck to run with a mog.
For an even more extreme european event have a look at the Ladoga Trophy in Russia, I thought i was never going to recover my racer from one swamp!

yeah, the breslau is literally just one of the events. tbh dad wants to go for the recovery side, and i want to go for the competition, so i suppose its all just down to how it goes  :) if we have a major break down we'll just stick it back on the truck and tow it home i recon. therell be at least 2 of us competing, us and tim ibbett in his mog. and possibly some others if they get the time, so for recovery we'll be pulling each other out.
we still need to find somebody for the support truck, im hoping casto will volunteer ;)

What truck are you thinking of for support?

Are you aiming for the 2014 event? If so I will find out if a very good friend of mine(Stefan Douve) is one of the official mechanics again, he has worked on the event many times and has good contacts for unimog parts near the rally.

we'll probably try to find a merc truck like the 4x4 1124 hopefully, but maybe a 4x4 917, theyre cheap to come by and lots of the parts are the same as the 814.

i doubt we'll make the 2014 event, but hopefully 2015. i you could that would be great, the more people we know at the event the better :)

ive had a quick look at the ladoga event, it seems to be based very much on the lighter chassis?

dads welded the back of the cab along the top


looks pretty tasty

also stripped the chassis on the left side,




dads also connected the air system up for the winch using a smaller air tank, i havent got a pic yet but will upload one soon :)

people with keen eyes will notice that weve fitted the 540/1000 rpm pto as well :)

Looking good.... Well what's left of it!

What's the score with sorting air for the winch? Is it an air switch, or an air powered winch? I've read about pneumatic winches but know nothing about them?

We're putting a small box on, then taking the pipe right to the back, the quieter it is the easier the event is on you :)

woops, sorry njc, forgot to reply to your post, the winch is mechanically driven by the pto (dad has fitted that, just got to get some pics), we're fitting the f56 now rather than the double drum, mainly for space and also simplicity, theres also the fact that the f56 is variable pull and auto spool. its the clutch thats air operated on the winch :)

we are contemplating a turbo, but to get much more power than you would by just adjusting the fuel, you would have to fit piston coolers, cos otherwise your pistons melt. you can get one of those fancy gadgets that go on your exhaust pipe to warn you, but whats the point in having 200bhp if you cant use it all the time ???

Can you just decide to fit piston coolers? How would that work? Surely they're machined into the engine and it would be easier to get a donor piece from a different engine? Or is that why it's not sounding like an option for you?

the om366 has piston coolers, so we would use those if we wanted to, but its a big job, and were not too bothered about ultimate power at the mo :)
