Whats the furthest you've driven your MOG in the UK?
« on: June 21, 2017, 11:13:56 am »
I wondered what sort of distances your would entertain driving your UNIMOG on public UK roads.

I have a car show coming up that I go to every year at Shelsey Walsh hill climb. normally I take a road car of some sort.

What I have been thinking is if I could make the trip in the Unimog? The trip is on a Friday day time to get there - from Southampton to Shelsey Walsh normally takes me about 3 hrs in a car, I know the Mog will be super slow, it runs LPG so I could stop off at stations to refill. there are a number of long hill on the trip which I guess the Mog will crawl up.

Do you think I'm mad for even thinking it? - I was thinking of the distances the Mogs in the US make as a routine drive to the deserts, so perhaps its not too far?

The truck is generally reliable, and I carry normal spares and tools, I have recovery back home too if the worst happened.

I would like to know your thoughts and any tips if you have carried out any similar trips.

BTW I have a 404 DOKA running a full gotpropane LPG system..

regards Dave

I think you should go for it if the truck is generally reliable you are minimizing risk by carrying spares & have recovery if needed what can possibly go wrong  :-\  you can't be any more certain that the car is going to get you there.

When my landrover decided it wanted a holiday at a repair garage for a week I was running round in the mog. I rather enjoyed it (especially waking the neighbours up 😂) but I'm a bit quicker in my 406 than your 404.
If you have break down cover then I'd go for it. Worst that could happen is you get recovered home then drive the car over. Villager and moose have been all over the place in there unimogs over the years
cant beat the smell of diesel and 2stroke in the morning :)

My dad and I went to Gaggenau from Harrogate for the 60 years celebrations in a 406, had no troubles except for the canvas flapping which we tightened up :)

Hi the 404 will be fine use a good synthetic gear oil in the running gear in the old days squadies thrashed the living daylights out of all Unimogs and the 404 suffer from heat build up in the hubs so use a good grade sun and it'll be fine the m180 is a very under stressed engine with little power Mercedes tend to do this for reliability the theory being you can't break it without the muscle enjoy 😀

I am  slowly building up my confidence with driving a little further each time I go out.

Making a trip to by Brothers place this coming weekend to pull out some logs from the woods, and get rid of some rotten stumps. It will be my first motorway trip its only about 30 miles to his place, mostly flat but I do need to do a stretch on the M27 from junction 2 to junction 7 which should be 'fun'

I drove down the main A road from Salisbury to Romsey the other day and it ran great, I actually caught up with traffic rather than holding it up, which was nice. - got the truck up to top speed too!

Longest trip I've taken on in mine was about 50 miles. Just forget rushing and get there in your own time. These machines are designed to run all day without issue.
