A New Mog Owner .... Almost
« on: October 06, 2015, 11:42:33 pm »

Hello All,

I've got a bit obsessed with Unimogs and am desperately trying to find the perfect one for my tree work.
I just won this lovely u900 on eBay but it seems it was most likely a scammer. I just wondered - does anyone here know this machine and who owns it?

Either they should go ahead and sell it to me, or at least they should know there's someone out there advertising it !!

Cheers,
Gadgeteer

Excuse my ignorance but what makes you think its a scam?
Surely if someone has it up for sale and then someone buys it, its theirs.
i thort that was what pay pall was for so the seller doesnt get your brass until you have received the goods?
Im not right up on ebay workings.

Not quite as simple as that unfortunately. People sometimes use pictures that they've found elsewhere to advertise an item they don't even have! I got half way through a deal on a wood chipper that way last year until I tangled the guy up and caught him out.

In my case the seller asked for immediate payment on completion of the auction. I did a bit of homework before I paid and found that although the chipper was up for sale right up on a Scottish island the seller was based in Leeds (I think). He was keen to get it on a pallet for me to save troubling me with collection. I asked if a local friend could collect for me and he said he'd rather work with his own courier. I then obtained his phone number from ebay and called, although he had avoided all attempts at getting his number from him. He couldn't speak a word of English which I found very odd considering he was selling the chipper for his father (his excuse for being so far away), who had lived up there all his life and didn't have the internet!

My advice would be to bid on it as you normally would but do not allow payment of any funds what so ever until it's been viewed, test driven and you're standing there with the guy who's selling it.

I've seen some in Germany that are too cheap to be true. Also the same photo but in different towns.
Sent a mail to one but got no reply. I think that the scam is that you pay up front and never see it.

If it seems too good to be true watch out !!!

Ah right i understand now, seems like extreme caution is needed before spending large amounts on ebay.

I never do large sums over the internet. If the seller isn't prepared to accept the time it takes for you to check them out then there's always a deal to be had elsewhere.
