Another newbie
« on: November 09, 2014, 07:47:14 am »
Hi all,

I'm Will and new to the site. I currently do not have a mog - had a 404 a couple of years ago - sold it to my regret - did't have a shed to put it in and didn't like seeing it outside!

Anyway, thinking of buying another Unimog - probably a small one - 411 or 421. Went to look at a 421 that was on ebay a couple of weeks ago but the cab needed a huge amount of work (the seller stated it would take a couple of days to repair!). I have seen a 421 advertised in Holland - looks tidy from the photographs although the interior has been 'modernised'. Well, the machine has not got any registration documents - the vendor states that no documents are required for an Unimog in Holland - whether this is true or not - I'm guessing this would make registering the vehicle in UK difficult (I haven't been in touch with the DVLA yet). Has anyone any thoughts on this situation - my feelings are that the purchase could be just too much hassle (especially when add the cost of transport) - but the small unimog seem to be pretty rare in the UK - especially in reasonable condition.

Thoughts appreciated - or does anyone know of a small Unimog for sale closer to home?

Will

Hi Will and welcome to the forum.

I'm always on the lookout for mog items so if I stumble across anything that may be of use I'll post it up. As far as registration is concerned I'm not sure of the answer. Probably best to ask the people who will be making the judgement before committing financially. These things are usually more complicated than they need to be! I would expect that with no background it could still be registered with a Q plate? If such a thing still exists?!

Hi will and welcome to the club :-)

As njc says, there are others who know better than me about registering it over here but they are nice little mogs. Don't think you will find many for sale that don't need work over here, as most are owned by people who love them to bits and don't sell them.  I'd say keep looking, it's funny where and when they turn up :-)

Hi bangertrack, welcome to the forum.
If the machine has chassis number, you should be able to send this off to Mercedes in Milton kenes and they'll find out what year it was made, then you go to the dvla with the proof of year and they should register it for you, we wanted to do it with the rokon but were unable to get the manufacture year :)

Cheers, Brian

Thankyou for the replies. Changed my mind about importing for a while - costs just too high! (i'm a bit tight). Also changed my mind about the model wanted - now decided I want a 406. Been to look at a couple off ebay - the green one with the VOSA prohibition notice - was surprised how much it went for - but in hindsight, probably a good buy with the low mileage. Also went the view the red soft top - but it had over 6000 hours on the motor and the cab was pretty tired. I guess, if want a better machine, must be prepared to spend alot more money!

Anyway - will keep looking.
