intro

Hello my name is Robin and I have a few military vehicles mainly Soviet/Warsaw Pact ,Uaz 469 and Uaz 452,PragaV3S .I had a Unimog 404S a long time ago .I recently bought a 1973 Unimog 404.0,its in good condition except the engine is seized and needs a rebuild or replacement ,thats the rub .Any advice given will be gladly accepted

Hello Robin and welcome,
When you say seized did it seize while running or when it was stood for a long period if it's the later there's loads of info about freeing rusted engines on the net, I remember years ago buying an engine from a scrap yard that was seized and the old lad telling me it would be a good engine because it was seized in other words it was a tight engine. I think I did the usual for that engine pour WD 40 or similar in the cylinders after removing all the spark plugs put a socket on the crank bolt with a long lever and weight and leave for a few days keep topping up the wd40 don't be tempted to rag the engine back and forth as this will break the rings.
Just thinking about it after many years I wonder if you could use muratic acid down the cylinders ? I've used this for rust removal but not to free a seized engine ! Google muratic acid.
If its completely ca put fit an130 engine lovely engine but rare will make a big difference.

 Hello Moose ,the unimog has been parked up 12/15 years before I got it 3 months ago ,I strongly suspect that the engine seized in the first place due to lack of oil ,and standing for so long did not help either,but the damage was already done  .We tried the usual methods diesel ets ,but nothing worked ,the engine was removed and there is a wobble in the crank .
So I am on the hunt for an M130 engine   ,any help would be appreciated

Cheapest place would be in the uk & Usa but Germany obviously but tend to be expensive
I'll keep my eye open have a look at the classic Merc sites

Hello again ,I need some advice as to buying some parts ,my engine is banjacked and is being re built ,
I of all I need an oil pump for a M130 engine  ,
and then brake and clutch master cylinders for a 1973 unimog 404.0  .
I think you guys must be able to recommend the  best parts suppliers

M130 oil pump will be difficult maybe a Merc part for that one as its not Unimog part but you could try Manfred Prince at Westfield 4x4 defiantly for the 404 parts you require.
If you find the master cylinders expensive you can have them bored out and stainless sleeves fitted there are a few companies on the inter web offering this service.
I have always changed my brake fluid religiously to help prevent corrosion but if your going to the trouble of a complete brake refurb and the Unimog could spend a long time standing check out DOT 5 again Google it's used in railroad Unimogs that are used infrequently.

Robin - you obviously have FAR too many vehicles and won't have enough time to give the Mog the attention it deserves.  I suggest you give me the UAZ 452 - I will take good care of it  8)

May i offer a suggestion for the master cylinders. I used Past Parts for my brake master on my U1000. They bored my unit and then stainless sleeved it and then installed new seals. Fast turn around, great quality and gents to deal with.
New challenges every month, but driving one cannot be beaten.

Sorry to hear about the engine. Have you thought of an upgrade for it or are you keeping it original? All I can say is there a nothing like driving a unimog around on  summers day, solving the problems will be worth it :-)

well my engine is nearly complete ,my engine man had ordered new pistons ,but when he went to the supplier in Ireland they had been sold and the supplier could not get another set . So all dressed up and nowhere to go .I went on the net and found the prices quoted mouth /eye  watering  / ,I have now ordered 6 pistons from AC Price ,they are expensive but a lot cheaper than another well known UK supplier and still cheaper that any amount of German suppliers ,hopefully they wont take to long to arrive .
any know where I might get a Warner winch without having to win the Lotto first ?

Hi Robin hope all goes well with the engine, Werner winches are expensive nowadays you can not find them for less than a grand nowadays for the most basic f64 the likes of f56 that are reversible and variable pull and speed are very expensive.
The one that suits your 404 is the genuine Merc winch nice winch again not easy to find but the suit the 404 well for the period look.

I'd win the lotto first! I  on the look out for something winchy as well. Might be worth a chat with Alex price again. That lad has al sorts tucked away!

Have to say I'm slightly excited that you have a Uaz 452, I've recently developed a fondness for them and would quite like to get one in the future. Where about's are you based?
