Hello,
my names Brian, im from North Yorkshire and im the administrator of this site.
here a few pics of mine and my dads Unimogs,
first our u900 406 120

With Mulag FME 400 hedge and verge cutter.

With Hycrack log splitter
Next our u900 406 145 (doka cab)

with Werner winch blade and werner f64 winch, we also have an f56.
Atlas crane.

then the u411

now on original wheels. since owning this weve put pto, hydraulics, air compressor and linkage on.
next u600 421, with landrover cab.
The landrover cab was put on years ago by my dad because the origional cab was absolutely shot, as soon as he put the cab on he didnt like it so it was donated to me for a project   i was only 3

Then my beloved u411 Westfalia (the same company that did the westfalia VWs)   
An Origional uk import, this model was often cut up by people who wanted the parts for the convertibles, hence, they are starting to get hard to come by. so are the panels!   

I am now waiting to get the cab of it so i can weld it up, im hoping some of the bits (such as head light dishes) will be the same as VWs.

so i invite any one who owns a unimog, or is just a fan of them, to join the club and expand everyones knowledge (including your own i hope    ).

I like the U900 with the cutter and splitter fitted. One question though - it looks like you've had to modify the top link fitting on the splitter? Is that bed set further back than standard? It seems silly that the top link would snag on the rear body at full lift?! Perhaps that's why some mogs have a wedge shape cut out of the rear body floor?

Yep, we had to modify it for the top link like you say,

reasons being:
1- this body doesnt have the wedge in it, so as you say it would hit the body
2- we used it for log deliveries so even if it did have the wedge we wouldnt have been able to put the logs in.

it is sometimes a bit of a pain, but most equipment can be modified or comes with a lower top link point, and a lot of the time what your using doesnt need the body 

you can also get a bracket that moves the top link mounting on the back slightly further back, helping it clear the body.
oh, and its just the standard spider frame and body 
In theory your top link should always be parallel with your lower link arms.

What sort of speed can it comfortably do with a load of logs on there? It's annoying that these things are so rare - I've never actually seen one working! Driving around an off roading site even with no payload and at low speeds doesn't give much away as far as every day use is concerned.

If I manage to get one I'm hoping I can get some paddock mowing work with it. Stick a 6' topper on the front and I recon it would get a fair bit done!

Also, what sort of fuel consumption do you expect when running the splitter?

its not very standard, highly modified engine. 
It produces 155 bhp and a LOT of torque (yet to test), put it this way, it doesnt know what hills are!  hence the larger wheels, which give it a top speed of 60 mph, 56 comfortably. to get the tyres on comfortably we had to lift the cab by 2", were currently on the hunt for some high ratio axles.
normally a standard 406/416 will do 48/50 mph .

were going to be doing some tree work i the next few weeks hopefully, so i'll take some vids 
i wouldnt worry about everyday use, its faster and more versatile than your average tractor, and can do more than your average 4x4.
Regarding the topper, i recommend you go for a rear mount, early unimogs are designed to carry a lot of weight on the back, so the engine is far forward, which means that your better of putting implements on the back if you can, my dad does paddock mowing for a bit of pocket money and has exactly what you said, a 6' flail, but on the back. then we have the mulag flail mower for cutting hedges, and also getting right underneath hedges, together its a proper unit! 
if you stick it on the front, it will do a tidier job, because the wheels of the mog arent runnning the grass over first, but counter balance the weight by putting a weight in the back. 

with the splitter i have no idea about fuel consumption, but an average 406 will do around 14/18 mpg depending on how its driven.
