Mogless Newbie
« on: May 13, 2014, 09:12:19 pm »
Hi,

After owning LR Series vehicles & Defenders  (hope they aren't considered swear words in these parts) I'm now seriously considering buying an Unimog.

Looking at either purchasing a ready built camper or converting one myself.

Great to find a forum for all things Unimog, I'm sure I will have lots of questions soon.

Hi stuck, welcome to Unimog Club UK :)

Don't worry, if followed by "wanting to buy a unimog"  it's not a problem! :D

First off I'd ask how many miles you plan to do in it, that'll help to work out the best model for you :) and feel free to ask questions :P

Cheers, Brian

Welcome to the forum fella. You've come to the right place for info... Just take it steady on the green oval comments because Bri can get a bit emotional! Most of us like LR products though, so we'll stick up for you. :D

Having been in the square cab mogs and owning a 406, I can say without a doubt that if I was driving far I'd want a square one! Each to their own, and I think the 406/416 can be made quite comfortable, but something like a 1300L is going to take some beating. It all comes down to budget and how much space you have to store it?

Thanks for the welcome.

At the moment I'm contemplating buying either a 1300 or 1500 with the intention of converting to an overland camper.

I've also seen a 2450 but that could be taking the proverbial.

The right end of the country for the best dealers then... That's a good start! The admin and early members of the forum are up your way too, although the community down here seems to be catching up nicely now. Shame it's a bit of a treck to the midlands mog meet for you because there will be all sorts of stuff there I think

Who are the best dealers then?

I've found a Milsurp dealer in Doncaster but that's about it so far.

AC Price seem to have the best name up North. There are others too of course, but I've never heard a bad word said about ACP

Hi Stuck,

Sounds like a 1300l would suit you, If you've got the funds a 1550 would be nice, but I wouldn't recommend a 2450, the 2450 is a very heavy chassis so the ride isn't very comfortable. Try finding an ex military (very common) 1300L with high ratio hubs (not so common, but not exactly incredibly rare either) it's a bit more money, but definitely worth it :) ) you can also find them with wading kits as well :)

And if your interested some of the northern members are going to be convoying down to the club meet, so if you have a mog by then (or even if you don't :P ) feel free to join us :)

And I have to say you can't beat a 3 pointed star for build quality  8) :P
