New member 'Rabbit Recovery' (me)
« on: September 25, 2013, 10:37:38 pm »
Hello folks I thought as I have just posted for the first time asking for help that I would introduce myself and explain the user name.

My name is Paul and I hail from Worcestershire, I have recently purchased a U1000 recovery truck that I am in the process of refitting with a spec lift having removed a Hiab and lorry under lift to use as a stage recovery vehicle on rallies and on my small holding. I am new to Mog ownership and have jumped in with both feet and no clue. But we all have to start somewhere. I a have a reasonable amount of knowledge as an amateur mechanic that has managed to keep most marks of landrover on the road throughout my life but had a sudden rush of blood to the head and went out and bought a Mog because I wanted to.

From this point forth please bear with me through my list of questions.

Second attempt as I posted too early but the possibly strange user name is my MSA call sign that I use within the rally world and not as a result of a love for fluffy animals with long ears.  :)

Hi Paul. Welcome to the forum.

Just by hearing that you're an amateur landy mechanic give me some idea of your level of experience... Most weekends and evenings under the bonnet fixing bits that have fallen off right?! I'm a fan of them myself, partly because of their ease of repair. I'm not so sure about mogs but Brian the site owner and his father are almost constantly pulling something apart so will be able to help when things give. Luckily being so well made breakages don't seem to happen too often but when bits do go they look to be pretty heavy!

I'm just down from you in Gloucester so if you're in need of man power for anything give me a shout. I haven't got my own mog yet so I'll take any excuse to come and help. Unlike yourself I'm keen to learn as much as I can about them before taking the plunge!

Hi Paul,

Welcome.  I think most people with an interest in things of a 4x4 nature have spent time working on green ovals, I know I have.

Cheers

Ian

Good morning all,

NJC i will be taking you up on that offer of assistance i am sure, but in the meantime once the workshop is set up (yes i bought a Mog and have now purchased a new house complete with Barn to house it) you will be welcome to come around for a visit and to have a crawl over it. I am not a perfectionist but i would like to have it in a condition where i am confident it will not let me down. As such over the next few years it is going to be overhauled and equipment added that is to my liking.

Casto, it is an interesting rig, i know some history and that is that it was owned and operated by a recovery company in Glasgow for a number of years, hence the Hiab crane, underlift, lockers and winches that it was sporting when i purchased it. Since i got it the Hiab has been removed and sold on and the underlift removed. Currently i am mounting a larger spec lift from a recovery truck and relocating the rear winch. Once done the lockers will be refitted and some new ones added. The only minor issue is that i only have 4 days to complete this and service it before using it for it's first event in October. You have to love a challenge!!!

Ian, I still own one green oval and dont doubt that it will not be my last. Though my Discovery had to be sold it has not gone far and is soon to be working for my father. This does mean that i get the opportunity to remove the improvements that i have made for the work that i did with it over the last 10 or so years at my leasure as i will still remain responsible for maintaining it for him.....

I was thinking I'd seen it around too. Not in person but there are pictures floating about of it somewhere. If I find them I'll post a link.

It used to belong to a company called 911 Recovery in Glasgow. Was purchased by the previous owner from Atkinson Vos in about June 2012. I found it on eBay about 2 months ago and as they say the rest is history  ;) Any pictures would be appreciated.

Once you have a Landy they get under your skin. I think my 80 V8 will be around for a very long time  :) :)

were slowly trying to convert brian into a landy fan, and were getting there slowly  :D ::)

Lies, all lies!  :o

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum, sorry i haven't replied sooner, i've been away in Croatia/Bosnia all week.

Nice looking rig you have there, only one problem, not enough pics!  :D what kind of winch does it have on the back? when mounting the spec lift remember not to drill the chassis, this weakens it.

In all honesty we had a full trial spec land rover when i was 14, we went playing with penine land rover club regular, when dad sold it i was sad to see it go, but that was mainly just cause of the fun times we had in it :P it had a really sweet 3.9 V8 in it, with viscus auto gear box :) glad to see you've seen the light though and bought a mog, just remember "when it over in your Rover, Finish the job in a Unimog!"  ;)

And ask as many questions as you like, thats what the forums for  :P

Cheers, Brian

The Mog is currently sporting Come Up HV12000's front and rear which should be adequate.

I will upload more pictures once the rebuild is complete and I have made it my own  ;)

No additional holes as I'm using the Hiab mountings at the front and picking op off existing bolt holes in the rear cross member. This is the MK1 mounting as it is probably too rigid and will remove the chassis flex but I need it on and working so I am taking the most direct route for now and will reengineer the mounting with time.  :)

Good to hear youre aiming for isometric mounting! something so many people don't realize is crucial :)

As for the winches, theyll certainly do your job, but if you want the ultimate in recovery, i'd recommend eventually investing in an werner F56 for the front (variable pull, auto feed, super long winch rope etc) and a rear mount f64 for the back, will be quite an expensive doo, but they are the ultimate! :)

might also want to look at werner winch blade mountings for your spec lift mounting :) should imagine that it will help a bit.
