newbie!
« on: March 09, 2016, 05:33:55 pm »
Hi Guys,
i'm lusting after a 406, is it dodgy running as agricultural on the road when you're not a farmer? i have a big lawn if thats enough! what about running red too? i'm a bit worried about getting done... it will only be an off road play thing and wont be used for gainful employment.

Cheers
Simon

Hi Simon, welcome to the forum.

Depending on the year you could register it as historic vehicle, this will make it tax free, and if you are using it for agriculture you don't need to have it mot'd either, you need to tell the post office that you use it for ag each time you tax it and you need to fill in a form saying that its used for ag if I remember right, not sure about the form bit though.

Otherwise there's limited use if you research it, doesn't always suit everyone though :)

Cheers, Brian  ;D

Hi Brian,

Thank you  ;D

i've been 'collating' information for about a year now and nearly bought a 404 radio box last year but chickened out at the last minute! i wish i'd bought it now  :(

its 1981 so i cant do the historic thing, how can i prove i do or dont use it for agriculture? i dont own a farm and am an engineer lol.

i will mainly be messing around locally and going to work in it and possibly the odd steam fair as my old man shows a truck. it seems a very grey area this agricultural lark, if youre not a farmer.

The limited use might work better for me, i'll investigate.

Cheers

Hi Simon
Welcome to the club.
Watch out for mogs, they get into the blood and can become addictive 😊. If in doubt I'd run it on white especially if ur not in any kind of arb/hortic industry.
With regards to the historic vehicle taxation, it's just a simple form u fill in saying it falls into one of the categories ie agricultural and sign it. I couldn't do it on line so had to go into the post office.
If your In engineering how about a 406 with hiab.... class it as a crane?? And I think they can run on  red but dont quote me on that lol

Cheers

Hi Casto

Thank you, nice to be here  :)

Yes i used to drive one when i was a lad in the early 80's, just in a field pulling the bale cart about whilst the men loaded it... ive never been able to shake the feeling off! all i remember is that it had a round bonnet, air handbrake and it would do 55mph, of course it was the mighty 406  :D

Theres no way i would get historic on the one i've got my beady eye on as its a 1981, i dont want a crane as i want to put some kind of box on the back and convert to a day van kinda thing.

So could i say it was for agricultural use but run it on white whilst on the road ? i'm just worries about being pulled and cant prove that i'm a farmer  ???

Cheers

As I understand it, as long as you have a pto and linkage, it can be registered as a tractor, no matter what it's used for. The argument usually comes over the fuel, plus you have a limited milage from your base on red.

I agree, white and make sure she is legal same applies to all tractors. If your off-roading it buy a 416 or a u800 the 406 is nose heavy and she'll hand stand on you !!

so as long as it has a pto and linkage i dont have to explain myself?

i will run it on white as i really dont want to push my luck, the miles i will be doing wont kill me on fuel costs.

Can a 406 take a reasonable size box on the back for camping? that should counteract the small wheelbase for off roading  :P

Well all tractors have a pto and linkage (except the very early ones) with an engine somewhere so I can't see why there would be an issue with calling it a tractor if u had them fitted.

As moose said  when ur off road watch for the hand stand they can do, it's the only thing that realy scares me in a 406 lol.

There's a pic on Google and on here somewhere of the, now mine, black mog that moose had with a camping body/pod on it

It's for sale 😀 Tractor doesn't need linkage, implement carrier is also a definition so as long as it has pto and can carry implements.
