well this evenings news update...... not quite going according to plan ......
good things on the list ....  All the gears / difflocks / brakes steering and suspension sweet :)
the engine fits the bay with reasonable clearance ( i am able to check the oil level from the drivers seat   )
all greased up and controls all good .

the bad points .....  o dear :(
the clutch from the series engine has a different spline than  the output shaft  .... bugger ! being a perkins engine removed and the fact the perkins goes straight in a series .
the bell housing adapter plate although useable with a little drilling only serves to push the pressure plate further away. just as well i guess because the pressure plate is too big and the output shaft isnt long enough .
made a quick call and found that a mate has a petrol mercedes and gonna see if a mog clutch from that will work , i have seen the price of a genuine clutch and that hurt a little from the usual 30 quid for a landy clutch . 180 for a new unit with thrust bearing and release fork sound right ?  might have to wait and tidy up the body and cab a bit and save up some cash , but am beginning to question if i should have gone for villagers offer of a mercedes engine in the first place???? gotta be honest though the economy and running costs of the lr lump really make it a good choice to live with . 9 pounds for a service kit must be cheaper than genuine parts .
should i restore this vehicle to an original form or make it an everyday work horse thats fun along the way ??? hmmm damn this unimog fever :)

well i have decided to go for the 90 engine its a 15j not 12j like i first thought 155 nm and 80 bhp ish sounds about right compared to the original units output but thanks very much for the offer of the engine villager :) if i get a few days work in i may contact you on it if you still have it . i figure once i get it rolling i can get it all up together , have a few jobs on the farm to do so will try it on a chain harrow to test it out gently at first . next thing is insurance . the guys at nfu mutual seem to be struggling with a quote unless i just take to vintage shows :) does anyone here use nfu ? or can you recommend anyone else . thanks again for the offer and advice chaps

Ok sorry to have to ask again but i just cant find an om 6 series diesel engine for less that 1100 pounds !! out of my budget :( however i do have a 78 hp 12j na diesel for a land rover 90 , will this fit and would it be a powerful enough engine at 150 ish nm of torque ? i also have a spare 25 td but i measured the dimensions and the turbo would definitley foul the cab :( . any suggestions please
many thanks and sorry to pester but i wanna get my mog rollin :) thanks Kev

Gutted ! :( i have done all the measurements and checks and i just cant get my cummins into the mog without cutting the chassis . its too tidy to chop it about so i fear i am resigned to finding another perkins 4 cylinder . i just cant find one inside my budget . if anyone here knows of one i would really appreciate it  . on the other hand i was wondering what other diesels may fit and if anyone has one to sell please . Any help would be really welcome .
All the best Kev

ok the basic jist of it is....
it is a square nosed half cab ? 404 / again with no engine but has a good set of wheels and tyres 12.50 20 x4 2 of which have a lot of tread and 2 worn to about 5 mm no serious rust but needs paint  . 2500 for the whole thing as is or 1500 without wheels and tyres . i got mine cheaper because his is my mothers boyfriend and she knocked him down for me :)
just let me know if you want his number .

Thanks for all the welcomes :) i didnt get a chance to explain fully about the engine .im not even sure it will fit to be honest it is just an option i had from an old horsebox we have on my farm . i was thinking of setting it up with a 1500 rpm limit anyway and using the power for a large winch to pull the stumps with and not the draw bar . although i need to find some decent wheels and tyres and the steering wheel has apparently gone walkies . i am going to take a few photos to show you the rather sorry state its in although its isnt rusted just rough looking paint . 500 pounds without an engine seemed a bit of a bargain and i know of another down the road but not the round cab i prefer . watch this space and thankyou all for the advice guys

Introduce Yourself / Hello to all from wiltshire

A quick hello from myself (Kev) im an mot tester and self employed gardener here in wiltshire . always had land rovers but decided to pick up an unfinished project in the form of a 1962 404s tipper with no engine. formerly had a perkins 4 cyl which apparently died so was removed . i have a slightly whacky idea of a 5.9 cummins bt6a i would like to use so im looking for any advice i can get . i cant see any obvious issues but i kinda like the sound of 130 bhp and 400 ish nm of torque ( stump puller :) ) hope to meet some new people here and im always glad to help if i can . all the best Kev
