Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello everybody!

Hi Jon,
I have used a 404 for that purpose for many years. Most of the 404s that come on the market are petrol although there are a few diesel around. The ex military ones like mine had a 6 cyl sometimes twin carb engine which was around 100bhp but very thirsty! A lot of diesel convesions were done using low revving diesels like the old Perkins, but because the 404 is so low geared this makes them woefully slow on the road. In my opinion you need an engine which will hit 3500 - 4000 rev to make them usable. I have an Iveco 2.5 turbo diesel fitted and this is fine. you will also have to uprate the brakes for todays traffic! Mine has a pto non live drive although they are harder to find for the 404 now? I use mine with a mower, a crane with timber pincers and a tipping body - hard to beat in the woods!
Welcome and good luck!
Phil

Its rated at 600Kg full in and I think 400kg out....... but it lifts a tonne bag ok! The crane was electro/ hydraulic 12v, but I drive it from my engine driven hydraulic pump and it has a lot of grunt.... very good on timber with a pair of self gripping tongs, and the retractable arm will pull stuff in to where you want it!
If you look close you can see a jack leg beneath? This is a bit of box with a small ram inside and a car towball on the top, I extend this to take the weight (and break beads on tyres!) The ally body is a tipper so I have an air operated bed lock on the other side to keep things square?
The crane will actually take the spare off the roof too!
As I get older I have adapted stuff to save my back!
Phil.

with the gears on this....... on my 404 I had a similar problem to start with, the low two, nearest you, 1&2, then in neutral push lever away one click, then another - quite a long way! but then you must push forward 3rd as mine had a sequencing device so that you had to go to 3 after 2! You cannot short shift - at least on the military 404! There are actually 8 possible gears in there but you have to mod the guts to get them! and reverse only operates in low - dont listen to anyone who says "ah you can take the interlock out and get high reverse" its bulls$$t! as the reverse gear is on the low range shaft... ask me how i know!!
If you want to take the top cover off to play...... park or jack the back of the vehicle so the gearbox is level, it normally slopes down towards the rear, that way when inside the box it prevents all the dogs sliding rearward every time you try and line the lid up! Bitter experience!
This is all assuming yours is similar to the 4041

Good to see you are keeping the faith Tony! Lets have a "field" day what the rain stops? My daughter has a boyfriend with a Mog and NJC is local - that almost makes a meeting doesnt it? Better still if I can find some timber to extract!!

Put it this way....... I wouldnt tow a mower down this slope with the Drott! Photos of slopes never look much, but believe me - this is steep - even in the Mog!

Its a bit of a tool! The surprising...... and quite frightening thing is - it doesnt grip very well! This is a smooth track loader with no grousers or cleats on the tracks, the Mog 404 will run rings around it on steep ground. I drove it up a steep slope recently and all was well until it broke traction, then it went backwards downhill like a 7 ton sledge! Only dropping that 4 in 1 bucket stopped it - I think the very low ground pressure means it skates easily! Interesting though, I would have thought it would go places the Mog wouldnt!

Mog 1 - Drott nil!

Thanks Rabbit.......... was going for scrap and at 6 1/2 tons when scrap was high! Convinced the old boy if I could get it going Id buy it! Then the problem was shifting it? I got it going, he said he could deliver......... He phoned me 7.30am one Sunday waiting at the gate - he had only driven it there on the road!! OMG!
Fitted a back actor on it and very useful too!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJPeYY0u0Qo

Ive been doing a bit of that with the 404....... it wouldnt pull the stump though! Only 2ft dia and I left 3ft out of the ground to pull........... ended up being a Drott job and still had to dig 2 ft deep all around with the back actor........ I know its not a Mog - but it is old and interesting!

So Mike - looks like you totally fabricated an adaptor between Mits bell housing and Mog box? That's a fair achievement! how did you get that all square and centred? Is yours a single front engine mount? I put an A frame on the cross tube and "hung" the front from that. Been in about 8 years and seems to flex with the Mog OK!

Mike......... you cant show us that and not say what the engine is!! I ended up going a similar way with RHS manifolds on the Iveco 2.5 tdi and it is far more pleasant not having the exhaust manifold roasting the side of your leg!
I have a further mod to make after last weekend though............ doing some extreme brush cutting in the unseasonable heat with a trailed mower on steep banks....... I boiled the power steering fluid!! So a cooler is now being devised!
