404 cab rebuild

Made a start today on my 404 Hard cab (ex fire tender) restoration.
It looks ok in the photo, but the tin worm really has had a field day on this lump of steel. The worst areas are around the top of the windscreen frame and the front edge of the roof. Some of the rusty bits even made a break for freedom on the way home from the Isle of White  ::)
Cab floor is gone in a few places and the door bottoms need attention, luckily I enjoy welding and a challenge!

Looks like a good project, I have seen worse than that reserected, should be quite simple to repair, you'll have fun.  ;)

I do like the look of the closed cabs!
So what's your plan with it? Restore it as a fire truck?

OOOOH is that a gun turret / fire hose squirty turret in the top? How cool is that ? Mog with sun roof! I doesn't get any better! Good rabbiting wagon too! Keep the pictures coming!

Oh yes, that is a turret on top! That's the best bit, it hinges open over onto the drivers side. I can see my lad having great fun standing standing on the passenger looking out the turret as we drive along  :D
The vague plan when it done is to swop it with my rag top cab, I just fancy a change and a bit of luxury like wind up windows! Hope to get some good sound insulation there too and maybe a working heater.

Plenty of time fixing that I'd say Mike but worthwhile.
The hatch gives it a bit of an A-team feel. Looks great. It will be good when the plan comes together.
Is that a standard original 404 hard cab? Am thinking of going down that route with what's left of my own cab for better or worse. would be good to have an idea of what to work towards. Though it wont be a match.

Yes it a original 404 hard cab, I've not see another one in the UK, has anyone else??

There are plenty of converted cabs, some good and some err not so good  :o  I think if I was building one from a rag top cab, I would modify a Land Rover truck cab to fit to fit?

To be honest, to modify a Land Rover truck cab would need so much work, widen and lengthen, that it would probably be better to just make a complete new cab!
I have a truck cab sat in the garage if you need any measurements!  :)

I have no idea I this will work but here's a modified cab on a 404 that is on eBay at the moment. Using landrover cab parts.

turnip, that actually looks quite good, looks like it has used a safari roof for the conversion.
my truck cab is the rounded roof type so would be a little more tricky to convert.  :)

Made a bit more progress today. Got the windscreen frame done, just needs the welds grinding back and then I can start on the front of the roof and gutter replacement.
Also cut out and replaced the gutter above the passenger door. I made it up using various sizes of angle steel, which I spotted in B&Q by chance, possibly not the cheapest supplier but convinent for small quantities.

Looking good Mike! I had to get short lengths of angle for a job and strangely RS Components were very competitive!! Last place I would have looked! The amazing ones are Metal Bits Burnley - I had to fab up a job fast and everything about them was unbeatable. They cut to length, beat all on price, and deliver way cheaper than anyone else I can find - Google them?

That's a very tidy job. Really like that hard top.

Going to look up Metal Bits now as I will soon need some for my 411, thanks Turnip.
