Going to look at a 404 tomorrow..
« on: September 30, 2014, 10:24:46 pm »
Not sure if I'll be able to fit or get a PTO for a 404 but the 404 is in my price range and ticks a few of the boxes  ???

The 404 is again a good hobby mog, however it limits you if you wish to work with it, there is no standard rear linkage (none in existence as far as I'm aware) it's petrol, so unless you go for LPG it's going to be uneconomical. Then there's the payloads, 404: 2150Kg, 406: 3000Kg, 850KG is a lot when you need to carry it somewhere :P
the 406 also has a roomier cab :)

It all depends on the what you want to do with it :)

Well, i went to look at this '62 404 its low miles and quite tidy, its been fitted with a troop carrier style rear body with a newish spft top and bench seating to carry beaters up on the hill. The mog has been parked up for a while but started up easy enough. It was very difficult to find a gear which i put down to lack of use. Once driving it eased off a bit with a touch of double declutching it went up the box ok. All in all a good truck for the asking price, but i still have my reservations as to whether i should ne saving up for a while yet!!

It on an ag plate just now... Probably better to get it on a historic plate if it falls in the mot free zone

... if it falls in the mot free zone
I think the only way to be MOT free is to be a recovery vehicle or an agricultural one.  There are restrictions on distance from base if you go the agri route.

I was told my 404 was MOT exempt when I bought it.  Turns out it is not.  This is not an issue though because, in my opinion, if it can't pass an MOT it should not be on the road anyway.

My thoughts exactly Ian. How farmers can be allowed to drive around with the sort of weights they do without the kit carrying it being checked is beyond me. Especially when you look at some of the trailers in use! I wouldn't trust some of the kit I see to carry it's own weight, let alone a load of bales!

I suppose if the owner knows what he's looking at and does his own checks then it's ok. I'd imagine the likes of moose are quite capable of judging the state of a vehicle, but not everyone knows all the checks and I'm sure many don't bother at all. One of my brake lines on the mog was nearly worn through and I hadn't spotted it even though I'd made my best attempt to look over it. That's part of the reason for my calling the mechanic out to go over it for me.

The has been a change in the rules with in the last 6/12 months regarding the MOT, in that vehicles registed before 1960?( don't have the full info to hand), are MOT exempt, need less to say though it's still got to be road worthy, as with any vehicle using the road.
To be MOT exempt using recovery as it's use, the vehicle can't carry a load only tools, and equipment for recovery use, and usually have a jib or under lift, to tow the broken down vehicle.
Most people know one, a bloke down the pub with a transit beavertail, with recovery stickers on, and saying he's mot exempt, OK til some thing goes wrong!

What amazes me is the old broken down unimogs that people tow on overloaded trailers behind small 4x4s ;)
