The Westfalia 411 project: Worlds slowest!
« on: February 23, 2013, 04:41:49 pm »
Hello,

just went out to put some oil on the studs that hold my chrome trims on and thought i might as well take some pics whilst there.

so here it is the fabulous westfalia 411, AKA my pride and joy, believe it or not...
with its nun-hood on and after a wash

the engine

and air filter, plus its super awesome heater 8) ;)

Now as my project threads always end with worlds slowest, people tend to get used to it and completely ignore it, but this one really is going to be slow as it needs a heck of a lot of work, and the panels are ni-on impossible to find, in fact, so far theyve been impossible :'(

So there it is, the basis for my favorite model unimog, when theyre done up they really are very nice to look at :)

Cheers, Brian

You may need to speak to the guys who had these cabs for sale, to see if they have the late style 411 cab that you may need. I'm sure that it will cost you more to rebuild your cab with new panels rather than buy a good cab to start with.

Westfalia made the frog eye cab as well as this latter cab. Both came with the 411 chassis number, even though the frog eye was part of the 401 model series as well.

i wondered if you thought the cab was a replacement for the soft top, its amazing how many people do. in fact the westfalia cab was always classed as the "comfort" cab :) but farmers and foresters wanted the soft tops, which is why they were cut up  :-\

Also, i have never heard of the 411 being fitted with the frog eye cab, as far as i am aware, it was only ever fitted to the 401 and 402? the only westfalia cabs i am aware that were fitted to the 411 were this one, the u32 had the cab designation 117 and the u34 had 120? for example, mine is a u34, and so has a chassis number starting with 411 120.

I have a friend with a 411 chassis number with a frog eye body. The chassis is the narrow 401 type. Maybe the last of these versions were sold off cheep in the UK when the new westy cab style was being sold in Germany.

had my eye on a westfalia cab auction the other day, but unfortunately the guy removed it, i presume because it wasn't reaching the value he was after, why cant they just put a higher starting bid  :(

so think ive found a new bonnet and head lining for it now  8) which should be awesome  :D

Now then tim, sorry forgot to reply, I'd love to buy those cabs, but i don't have the funds at the mo :( thanks for thinking about it anyway :)

Hi Rob, welcome to the club :) I know what you mean, they're my favourite model, something a bit different :) getting hard to find now as well :P Looks a good base you have there, I'd hazard a guess that its around the same eara as mine, its got a 3 piece axle and early type indicators :)

Why do you need a new screen? Panels are the worst to find, haven't found anyone that makes them yet :/

Cheers, Brian
