Ive allus wanted to own one so here goes, if it turns out to be the biggest disaster since the titanic at least i can say well ive done that and dint like it then get rid, rather than thinking what if.

When you think that in 1976 Unimog had all round disc brakes, coil suspension, cross axle difflocks, a massive 5.7 l engine with a twenty speed gearbox ETC in a vehicle with a footprint the size of a land rover !

I haven't been on here for a few days so only just spotted this. Nick, that's great news fella. Welcome to the world of having such oily hands you can't even manage to open your empty wallet! :D

As soon as you've got it home we need pictures. It's exciting when a new member comes up and shows us their mog, but it's even better when someone joined wanting one and finally manages to bite the bullet. I'm sitting here like a little kid in a sweet shop - I can't wait to see it!

As for driving it home, well if you're anything like me feelings will come in phases. First thought will be "oh yeah, I've just bought a Unimog!". That will be (very) closely followed by "I'm sure I'll get used to this", then "oh my god what have I done?!". When you get home you won't want to get out and may well do another trip around the block just so you don't have to go in the house and leave it just yet. I can't be 100% sure but that's exactly how it went for me.

Don't you go forgetting those pictures...

Ha ha your defo right about the empty wallet, infact everything else also, couldnt wait to get mi sweaty little hands on the beast which got decidely more sweaty when i heard the engine roar into life.
On the initial raz round before hitting t open road my hart sunk as i thort what the hell av i done ( they arnt right clever on steep hills are they) but 20 mins into the journey home i was loving every second of it, well almost, 3rd gear is a proper swine to get into, had a few full on traffic stopping moments as i cursed the retched thing, my mate who was following said it was pure comedy as he could see me through the rear window wrestling the gear stick wi both hands.
Every time i pass by it now i want to get stuck into sorting various bits, it looks a load better after a dam good fettle, need to get on top of the rust patches that are showing, hopefully i dont uncover owt like phills. As soon as ive layed my hands on a digi camera and sust out how to get pics uploaded i will. I dare say im bahn to have a zillion questions to ask int future from you guys.

PS.my speedo dunt work either.

Hmm, speedo doesn't work... Join the club!

Third will come to you. There's a gate separating 1st and 2nd from the rest of the box which you need to get through and there's a bit of a knack to it. Once you've done 1/2 don't even aim for 3rd, just aim straight across the gate then once it's popped through shove it forwards into 3rd. There's also some kind of lock that will stop you from jumping 2nd to 5th so don't worry about that happening. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. Generally speaking though don't even bother with 1/2 on the road. Just pull of in 3rd. All this is assuming you have the 6 speed box otherwise everything I've said is rubbish!

Oh and hills. Ever get that feeling it would be quicker to get out and walk?! :D

Lol. When I bought my U900 I didn't know how to select the faster road gears and spent a bit of time shifting all the gear levers to see which ones made a difference to the road speed and thinking what have I done, is this vehicle really meant to be so slow.

There is a page on this site somewhere which explains which levers control what. Well worth printing off a copy before you collect your mog, save a lot of stress.

Is it a steel hard top or convertible?

Here's a picture of the lever options and functions. On a basic mog you will have the 1-6 stick, the forward and reverse (rear right side and back from the main shift lever with the arrows) and the diff lock knob. That may actually be a lever a bit like a hand brake on some models. I think down is 2x4, half way up 4x4 and right up diffs locked.

The other levers are the cascade box and pto. Ignore them for now. The cascade lever (if fitted) wants to be to the rear for road gears and we can talk you through all that later.

UNIMOG OWNERS !!!
A word of warning to anyone with a cascade gearbox be it in a 421 or 406 NEVER leave the cascade lever in neutral with the engine running, there is a grub screw that can work loose not a problem if it is in gear but when in the neutral position this screw can vibrate lose and jam the lever in the neutral position.
It's a engine out and gear box strip! Also never leave your main gearbox in gear you will weaken the synchromesh springs !! Fix your handbrake  :D

All sounds like good advice.

So to confirm from the picture above.

Green. PTO drive both, front only, non rear only

Black turn knob. Diff locks and 4x4

1 > 6. Road/field gears

Orange L, H. Is this for field and road, or for much more?

Black arrow. Forward, neutral, Reverse?

What is the other lever for, and how does the L,H work with this if at all?

Thank's Moose for that info, they don't put that in the books!
Yes Nick is it the one that vos had? it was green before yellow and advertised with a 'crunchy' gearbox!
