I can't think of what would be in the way preventing you to install a bottom pto.  Maybe it doesn't fit on hydrostatic or transmissions with a torque converter.  Do you have one of these?

The bottom pto is nice in that it allows you to direct attach an hydraulic pump that is only limited by the horsepower of the truck.  The hoses that come off the bottom pump look to be about twice the size as the ones that come off the front pump.  I think the bottom pto runs at the same speed as the engine rpms, maybe a little faster.
