I bought myself a 1965 Unimog 404 about 4 months ago it's a hard cab with a cargo body. It used to be a fire engine and has been stood around 20 years before I got it. I am now in the process of stripping it down so I can have the chassis blasted and painted and then rebuilding it. So I would imagine I will be on hear quite a lot for advice and info.

Welcome to the forum. It doesn't look too bad considering how long it's been standing. By all means keep asking questions and posting pictures - we love looking at other people's mogs! What do you plan to do with it once it's restored?

My plans once it's done are just to use it. I will sell my normal 4x4 which we have for winter and use the unimog for that and going to shows etc. As I will probably end spending abit of money getting it to a level i'm happy with it would be a shame to let it stand unused for months on end.

I've never been in a 404 - are they a bit more road friendly than a 406? Having said that, if you're not in a hurry the 406 is slowly growing on me. I think it just goes against my usual aggressive driving style. Relax a bit and learn to accept the odd car going around you and all is well!

It would be good to take it to shows. I think it would get a lot of interest.

What I know at the moment is that the cab is abit snug when your 6 foot 1 tall  :-\

You won't get much sympathy here. Both the admin and his father are taller than that I think, and I'm 5'6 so need a ladder to get in mine! :D

I really like the hard top 404 I've attempted to fit in them when I've been in Germany no chance !  :D what are plans regarding the engine is it m180 or a m130 being a fire engine it would be nice if it where a m130.
loads of people talk about putting diesels in 404s but LPG would be my preference quit power and good top speed and the fuel won't be far from the diesel.
Your only up the road from us your more than welcome to visit, we are going to Newby Hall vintage rally 7th June there's usually a good selection of Unimog nuts There ! And of course the Unimog meet down south.

Welcome to the club Ziggy :)

NJC on this one you're not alone :) I have never sat in a 404!  :o I've stood next to them, looked in them, but I've never sat in the cab.
I've always preferred the looks of the hard tops to the soft tops, I think the hard tops look very mean and squat.
I do believe that they aren't really any more road friendly than a 406 though, the standard petrol engine struggles on hills and I've heard they drop to 30mph quite quickly, however the top speed on a standard 404 is 60mph and above, but they have an almost identical gearbox to the 411, and I've read before that the gearbox has lubrication issues if such a high speed is maintained for any length of time. How true that is I don't know.

Moose, I'm hoping to keep the M180 engine it currently has but hopefully with a high compression head to help boost power. I will be considering LPG but it depends on cost to buy and finding a suitable place for the tank. I will be going to the Newby Hall Rally so hopefully see you and some other members there. Message me where you are and I will pop round.

Villanger, Yeah I agree the hard cab is better looking and the reason I bought this one and it offers better weather protection although its not easy to get in and out of   ::). I think the best way forward on the speed front is to try and keep the overall weight of the truck down so I have a few ideas on that front. Will try and get down to the forum meet but it will not be in the mog maybe next year.

Regarding LPG have a look at blos lpg carbs I have one and never fitted it by far the best and simplistic lpg kit check them out on youtube you'll be on twin carbs ? Also keep your eyes peeled for the m130 it's 2800cc out of cars and fits right in.

Belated welcome.

Just to add to the 404 speed discussion,  in my opinion anyone who drive one at 60mph needs a medal and a hearing test.  When I had more road biased tyres on mine the best I got to was 50 but it was only a short burst as the shear volume of everything mechanical was begging me to slow down.

You are right Brian,  any hint of a slope sees the speed falling away almost as quickly as when you brake.  You can tick 404 off your list at Lincomb next month.

I can say my mog will do 60 its a 404 with 12.5r20 and im ready for my medals lol I let mine sit at about 50 happy but noisy
