I have used a 404 for that purpose for many years. Most of the 404s that come on the market are petrol although there are a few diesel around. The ex military ones like mine had a 6 cyl sometimes twin carb engine which was around 100bhp but very thirsty! A lot of diesel convesions were done using low revving diesels like the old Perkins, but because the 404 is so low geared this makes them woefully slow on the road. In my opinion you need an engine which will hit 3500 - 4000 rev to make them usable. I have an Iveco 2.5 turbo diesel fitted and this is fine. you will also have to uprate the brakes for todays traffic! Mine has a pto non live drive although they are harder to find for the 404 now? I use mine with a mower, a crane with timber pincers and a tipping body - hard to beat in the woods!
