Hello from Izz
« on: February 22, 2016, 07:23:26 pm »
Hi...

Just joined the club. I've been a fan and the Unimog since I was a kid in school back in the early 70's. My tecky teacher showed us a "film" in class of a Unimog lumbering up a boulder stroon valley, I've never forgotten how impressed I was at the sight.

I'm now in a position to fulfil a life long ambition, so I'm on the lookout for my first Mog. I'd like a full agricultural short wheelbase with front and rear linkages, 4 way spool valves for front and rear,  front and rear PTO's and a 3 way tipper on the back.

Not asking for much am I !!!

If any of you are selling such a beast or know where I can lay my hands on one,  please give me a shout. Also which model variants / types / designations should I be looking for ?

Lastly what do all the "U" Numbers mean ? Is there any pattern to them ? LWB,  SWB,  Wheel Size, Engine Size ?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards.
Izz.

Hello Izz
Do you want to work or play in your Unimog ? If it's work then maybe a short wheelbase with lots of equipment is the answer but you'll pay a premium for this.
If you want to play then the longer the wheelbase the more stable the Unimog offroad and the less equipment the cheaper she will be.
There is no easy way to discribe the model range only after many years one learns the differences and meanings roughly the first number denotes hp I've u900 87hp U800 74hp U1200 120ps U1400 140ps but this is not always the case as 1400euro 2 has 163ps or a u1600 can have 160/214/240ps many many options with hp !

Wheelbase again many many options normally 50 as in u1250 or 1450 or 2150 denotes long wheelbase then there is the options regarding extra long wheelbase like l38 denotes a wheelbase of 3.8m.

Interesting I was once told by a man at the factory that the L on the end of a Unimog like 1300L means it's a chassis for offroad not just denoting a long chassis,  I'd like this confirming if anyone in the know can confirm this.
Happy hunting if you find something feel free to ask any questions.

Hi IZZ,

Welcome to the forum :)

If I were to go off the spec you've mentioned I'd look for a U900.406 or maybe a U1000 depending on how critical dimensions are.

Cheers, Brian

Yes she'll have to pay for her keep,  I have Croft that is at the top of a track that a Land Rover can't get up when it is iced over, at other times, raining, it is a water course and it is very steep too.

What I need is something that can take a digger / back hoe attachment at one end and a bulk bucket at the other but also be able to tow implements or carry bales or boulders or hi def 6x9x18 blocks,  sand,  hard core etc for drainage  work.

I might have to go for an old JCB if I can't get hold of a Mog that can cope with all of my requirements, and a Mog to use as an oversized pick-up.

One way or the other, I want a Mog so that I can get up that track in the winter.

Perhaps the best model for you then would be the U900.419, there were a lot of these sent over to america and sold as the "Frieghtliner military tractor".
obviously this means that most of these are in america, however you do get them over this side of the pond to in europe.
The reason I think they'll suit you is that they generally had a loader on the front and a backhoe on the rear, which folded over the rear body to make it compact.

Welcome Izz

Sounds like a unimog is a good choice. As Villager said, the freighliner version would be a great little rig and have plenty of power,  only thing it lacks is the load bed haul things around. Maybe have a detachable back acter in stead??

Cheers Casto

Hi Izz,

Welcome to the world of Mogs.

I sure someone on the forum will know but I am reasonably sure I saw a back actor for sale from a very reputable Unimog dealer in the north of England that is having a yard clear out. Probably the wrong way around getting that before the Mog but you have to start somewhere.

😲

I want one now I've read the spec! That's an awesome piece of kit lol. To be honest I didn't realise the backhoe (as they call,  it) is detachable. I could do with the hydraulic reel on the back for the log splitter lol

The 419 uses the same gearbox as the 417 but the cab from a 416. I believe that some of the cabs also used the 417 style mounting so we're quite comfortable. They were also tuned to 130hp from the factory.
Much of the back body is taken up by tool boxes and hydraulic connections for the tools that they could be specced with from what I know, however don't quote me on that. I do know that there's an auxiliary hydraulic tank mounted on the back.
