Hi

I was looking for a s1lwb landrover with a PTO but they are going for funny money , and a friend said what about a unimog 3point linkage PTO better off road and better all round , may have a chance of one but its been lying for 10 years , ? What things should I be watching out for with on a old uinmog 406 and what things go wrong , parts hard to get ?. Thanks .I am up in Scotland

Welcome to the forum fella.

Generally speaking, most parts for the 406 can still be sourced. It certainly wouldn't be any harder than finding bits for a S1. As for what can go wrong, where do I start?!

If it's been standing a long time then all the rubber seals will probably have hardened. I know - mine had! Then you've got various shafts and gears that will possibly have lacked oil in the higher sections of the gearboxes etc. Those parts can get rusty and wear very fast when you start using them again. The brakes could be seized and new rear calipers on these vehicles are big money. Portals are also a point that you really don't want to break on you.

Hopefully moose or Brian will come along and go into more detail. Be careful with your money if you're buying a restoration project. Parts, like the vehicle when it was new, aren't cheap.

Welcome to the club

Think njc has said most of it! One thing I'd add is watch out for the cab. Like a landy the can tend to rot in certain places. Front corners are bad as there's a ledge where mud sticks on. Try and bu a vehicle with all the things u want on it as trying to source the 'extra' kit can be exspensive (I've found out the hard way!)

Thanks for the info ,be good if there was a sticky up about the pit falls on buying and what to look out for .

Hi Veilmonkey, Welcome to the forum :)

Everything the neil and simon have mentioned covers it really, can't really go further into depth without knowing the specs.
I will eventually create a sticky, theres just a lot to put up on one :)
