Hello to all from wiltshire
« on: January 24, 2014, 11:25:45 pm »
A quick hello from myself (Kev) im an mot tester and self employed gardener here in wiltshire . always had land rovers but decided to pick up an unfinished project in the form of a 1962 404s tipper with no engine. formerly had a perkins 4 cyl which apparently died so was removed . i have a slightly whacky idea of a 5.9 cummins bt6a i would like to use so im looking for any advice i can get . i cant see any obvious issues but i kinda like the sound of 130 bhp and 400 ish nm of torque ( stump puller :) ) hope to meet some new people here and im always glad to help if i can . all the best Kev

Hi Kev. Welcome to UCUK.

It sounds like you've got a good knowledge of mechanics which is a great start! I know very little about that side of things having only just got into mogs myself. The torque figures sound high though, and I've been warned about using the low ratios in my 406 for pulling stumps as it can strip gears... may be worth noting for your application?!

Hi Kev

welcome to the unimog club  :)

hope you enjoy looking around and hopefully adding to the site. your mog idea sounds a bit mad to me but would be good fun. As NJC said, id be possibly worried about stripping gears out.

cheers Casto

Hi Kev, welcome to Unimog Club UK :)

a standard M180 engine from a 404 has around 140Nm, im gonna have to say that i think 400nm of torque would rip the 404 to pieces  :D and unfortunately a 404 half shaft is a tad more expensive than a land rovers. never mid a gear box :o  :D however, i do love a project and especially an unusual one :)

cheers, Brian

Hi Kev, and welcome
A Bt6, you may have to bolt the tyres to the wheels to stop them turning 8)
Have a look around on the internet, people have put all sorts of engines into unimogs with varying degrees of success.
A Bt4 may be a lot easier or if it converted to Perkins how about a 1004 Phaser turbo, they are a good motor with a manual pump and excellent spares availability?
whatever you go for I'm sure everyone one here will be pleased to hear how you get on.

Cheers
Tony

Thanks for all the welcomes :) i didnt get a chance to explain fully about the engine .im not even sure it will fit to be honest it is just an option i had from an old horsebox we have on my farm . i was thinking of setting it up with a 1500 rpm limit anyway and using the power for a large winch to pull the stumps with and not the draw bar . although i need to find some decent wheels and tyres and the steering wheel has apparently gone walkies . i am going to take a few photos to show you the rather sorry state its in although its isnt rusted just rough looking paint . 500 pounds without an engine seemed a bit of a bargain and i know of another down the road but not the round cab i prefer . watch this space and thankyou all for the advice guys

Is the one that's not a round cab a 404? They're quite rare and my preferred shape. And anything will fit, it's just a case of how much chopping needs doing :)

ok the basic jist of it is....
it is a square nosed half cab ? 404 / again with no engine but has a good set of wheels and tyres 12.50 20 x4 2 of which have a lot of tread and 2 worn to about 5 mm no serious rust but needs paint  . 2500 for the whole thing as is or 1500 without wheels and tyres . i got mine cheaper because his is my mothers boyfriend and she knocked him down for me :)

Gutted ! :( i have done all the measurements and checks and i just cant get my cummins into the mog without cutting the chassis . its too tidy to chop it about so i fear i am resigned to finding another perkins 4 cylinder . i just cant find one inside my budget . if anyone here knows of one i would really appreciate it  . on the other hand i was wondering what other diesels may fit and if anyone has one to sell please . Any help would be really welcome .
All the best Kev

try the om615 or 616, not the most powerful engine in the world, but the 616 especially revs its nuts off, and theyre one of the most reliable engines ever imo.

many thanks and sorry to pester but i wanna get my mog rollin :) thanks Kev

Brian, what do you think about sticking a Landy engine in it? :o :D

I reckon it could work, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope for Brian to be on side! Most things affiliated with the green oval usually bring on a blind rage for the poor lad! :D

ive heard of a nissan ld28t being fitted
an iveco engine, not sure which model though.
or theres this https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151723203882803&set=o.476875005690305&type=3&theater

or we have an om617 for sale, its a good engine (around 60,000 miles), we got it to replace an engine with 800,000 miles covered, but never used it. we have a turbo manifold to go with it, so youd need the rest to turbo it. Dad says he'd take 500 quid cash on collection. :)

please dont fit a land rover engine.
