I have bought a 1968 406 recently. I believe it is an ex swedish army snow plough. Still has the front pick up plus rusty hydraulic ram.
Had an ex Belgian army 404 years ago. Re-engined it with a diesel, but sadly never got it going. Sold it to an agricultural contractor in North Wales. He had it up and running and loved it.
I bought this one, partly because I love them, but mainly for a specific job in Spain. I have a crawler tractor that needs to move between a couple of small lands. I have an ex 2nd world war AA radar trailer that requires a good tractor, that can be road legal with relative ease, and that can brake the trailer using air. The unimog fits that category perfectly.
The Merc engine sounds awesome, starts on the button and runs really sweetly with very little smoke. The air over hydraulic system had been removed but I have most of the bits. I need to sort it out and put it back on. I found the cause of its failure, and have repaired it as is always the case the bodywork needs some refreshment. So I will be removing cab, renovating and spraying chassis etc.
All in all I will have plenty of questions to ask those with more experience. At present though I am still playing farmer, and have an old Ransomes Nordsten Seed Drill to refurbish before it travels to Spain. My other vehicles include Chaseside LM700 loading shovel, Same Leopard 85 vineyard crawler, MF 135 vineyard tractor, Renault F6 and F4 vans, and a Thwaites All-Dig with a Citoen Saxo diesel engine in it.
