Hello

I have just joined the forum as I am looking to buy an Ag spec Mog. Not having owned a unimog before I thought what better place to find out all the niggles and good points that I need to look out for.

I am no stranger to off-roading and have driven (mainly Land Rovers) all over the world, from the equator to the arctic.

I run a number of Land Rovers at the minute, from a Series 1 to a 130. I also have a Scot-track (soon to be for sale) and a couple of Quads.

Look forward to getting to know some members in the future.

Hi Mick

Welcome to the world of mogs :) you've come to the right place to find out about them. There's a variety of mog owners here that use them for work and play (then have moose  :D)
What kind of mog are you looking for (apart from just an ag spec mog :) )

Nice to hear you have land rivers as well

That is the million dollar question. A U900 sounds good to me.  It would have to be Diesel, a three point linkage at rear (at front also if possible) Front and rear PTO and Hydraulics front and rear. If I am honest the front option is a wish not a requirement. Preferably at least 100hp for the PTO and Hyd services.

I would be using it for agri and arbourist work. Also to power static machinery, eg log splitter.

Age is not really important, but needs to be in decent condition with no major mechanical problems.

Oh and I forgot about £15, if it comes with a full tank of fuel I could stretch to £20!

Hi Mick, welcome to Unimog Club UK :)

got to say im not famous for my Land Rover fandomship, but im always willing to chat about them, im more famous for my german machines :) must admit i have a bit of a soft spot for light weights ;)

regarding your mog i would go with a later model 900, you can get 100 bhp at the pto if you fuel the mog up to 130 bhp, but thats entirely your choice as it is risky. later mogs also have disk brakes as well, which is nice if you're going off roading :)

The mog would be a working tool, recreational off roading would be limited to my Land Rovers.

Need to get one before I think about tweeks.

The Land Rovers are all modified in some way, either off road tweeks such as diff locks or suspension modifications, performance upgrades like uprated intercoolers and holly carbs, or extra fuel tanks and overlanding modifications.

With a bit more research It would seem that I am going to have to go for a bigger Mog than the U900, probably one of the 'square' machines. Shame I like the classic look of the U900

Hi and welcome Mick,

Glad to see that someone else has a Landy or two. 

As for a Unimog, when you finally get one you won't know what you did without it.  I have a U900 406 ( have a look at my introduce myself for full pics and desc.) and it's fantastic for my Arb / ag work, great for everything, and a joy to drive, most memorable moment was coming through the middle of Burton on Trent and whilst waiting at the roundabout fully loaded up with trailer and chipper, a person going around the island in a car slowed down, stared at me and lip reading he said 'I want one..'  made me grin for the rest of the day as I have one!

The newer you go the bigger they are so i'm stopping with mine as a friend off here Nick, came around in a 1700 ( he's flogging a 1500 at the mo) and it was a tight squeeze around the house with mirrors folded in, where as my truck flies around without folding the mirrors in, only problem I have is how to fit two kids in it..

As for PTO HP yes the U900 has a powerful engine but the max Merc stated PTO power output is 45HP, which is around a 8 - 10" chipper so your right to look for a bigger one if your after 100hp.

Best time to look for me is allways from now until Jan on ebay as stuff comes up cheaper and no one has any money to buy.

The money is always a problem, I may have to sell the scot-track to help fund the Mog. All a question of priorities.
Good advice on the forum will help me get a suitable machine when I eventually take the plunge.
