404 Mogger

Hi Folks,

First post on here, great to see a UK Mog forum

I have a 1963 404 I rebuilt about five years ago, used for fetching fire wood, farm duties and playing in the mud  :)

Hi Mike. Welcome to UCUK.

That's a nice looking mog. How many hours do you think you put in to getting up back up together? Was it a major task or just a tidy up? It's nice to see a piece of kit like this being given some love and brought back to life.

If you have any, and have the time to post them, pop up a few pictures of the process as you went through it. We love to see that sort of thing!

Hi, I bought it from my mate John (Moggie1979) as a box of rust bits, it was a major job! Chassis was the only good bit, had to rebuild the axles/ brakes, lots of welding on the cab, complete re wire etc. The engine was seized solid.
I fitted the OM617 3L Diesel (ex G wagon) but being naturally aspirated it is a very gutless, it badly needs a turbo. Its fine off road, but on road, the slightest incline requires dropping a few too many gears, economy is great.
 I couldn't even guess the number hours put, but lots of weekends and evening here and there and like most Mogs, it will never be finished, there is always something that needs tinkering with!

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum :)

Nice tidy looking mog you have there :) I like the raised air intake, nice touch.
Dad has a turbo manifold for an om617 which he might be willing to part with if you're interested, just can't make any guarantees that it'll fit in the mog :) We know how gutless the om617 is, we have a g wagen with one in that's done over 800,000 miles (with a turbo fitted!) :) took it off the road a few years ago :P

hi Brian, I have a turbo and manifold which I plan to fit some time, but its not a straightforward fit. Cab needs a bit of chopping, exhaust modifying,  oil feed and drain pipes for turbo.
And then if I was to do it properly, it would need the turbo injector pump which increases fueling as the boost increases, different injectors and I think the turbo engine also has lower comp pistons.   :'(

Hi mike,

A fellow 404 owner over here in Belgium!
A word of caution, it's not just as simple as fitting a turbo & manifold onto the 617, the turbo diesel motors need piston cooling (the small bent oil pipe below the pistons, that cool them) a friend fitted a turbo set up on his and it went pop (his was in a very early g.wagen)

I was thinking about going down the 3l turbo route, but my mog came with 3 brand new spare engines, so don't know what to do yet.

Our g wagen was naturally aspirated, they just dumped the turbo on and cranked the fueling screw about 1/2 a turn, although it was that warn I think the expansion for the pistons was made up for by the slack :D
Would it be a problem if you don't turn the fuel up too much, with just a low blow turbo?
