Planning to switch from Land Rover to Unimog
« on: August 14, 2018, 04:05:50 pm »
Hi guys,
I’ve been a member of the Discovery 3, G4 Challange and 101 Forward Control forums for a few years so really appreciate the value of them.
I’ve owned my Land Rover Discovery 3 G4 Challange for about 3 years now and added a 101 Forward Control early last year.
The game plan was to convert the 101 into a camper and then go off exploring interesting parts of the world.
However, the realisation has just set in that it’s not big enough to live in for several months and parts can only be obtained by air freighting them from the UK.
Much research has drawn me to the conclusion that a Unimog (probably U1300L) is likely to be a far better bet, both in terms of space, reliability and parts availability.  It certainly appears to be the vehicle of choice for most German overlanders.
So - early days, as I need to shift the Land Rovers before I have room for a Unimog, but thought i’d Introduce myself rather than just reading everyone’s posts from the sidelines...

Dan.

Welcome Dan,

Many on here have the Land Rover disease as well. To be fair i think that other than the 130 101 that i saw done as a camper i would agree that the 101 would be too small. Other than that i am probably of little help but i am sure that the rest will be along soon. Look out for Villager and Moose plus plenty more as sound sources of knowledge and advice.

I don’t think I’ll post that on the 101 forum as it might upset them....  :D

Travelled back from Centre Parcs in Nottingham to Glasgow on Monday, so took a detour via Atkinson Vos.
Had a look around and discussion with their salesman Paul.
My wife is now onboard with a U1300L but she really loved this beauty.....

My understanding is that post-April ‘84 mogs require the side and rear underun bars for an MOT, which I’d rather avoid.  Can anyone confirm...?

Dan the Man,

Do you really mean pre '83 or post '83.

I would like to know either way and hope that someone can shed some light.......

AS well as AV have you spoke to A C Price Engineering about a vehicle (always worth a call IMHO)

You’re spot on RR - I did mean to type post ‘84 rather than pre ‘84 & will see if I can edit.
Don’t know as much about AC Price but will take a longer look.
Spotted L Jackson & Co in Doncaster too.  They appear to have a large range on ex-MOD vehicles in stock of almost every variety.  Frustratingly the prices tend to be “POA”.  Do they decide on the price by guessing what you’re prepared to pay.....?
Anyone got any experience of them?

Dan,

Yes you correct that the cut of date for under run/side bars is April 1984. Went through all this trying to get mine tested for the first time. As mine was an April 1986. And sort the headlights out which was a real pain.

Ah so Pre '84 and it doesn't require the under run protection! Result. Finally something has gone my way.  :)
