Not fit for purpose ?
« on: July 27, 2017, 11:16:42 pm »
Just got back from Baveria, plenty of Unimogs buzzing about but the council dont seem to be using them as much as previous. I wonder if the new mogs are just too big and expensive for general maintenance and all round universal jobs like they were origonaly intended ?  They seem to be using these nifty bits of kit as an alternative.

I got miffed as soon as they decided to make an implement carrier and what is essentially a posh off road lorry. The one that can do proper work is less able off road then the lorry, which just doesn't make sense in my mind. Hey ho, I don't suppose there will be many modern ones pulling timber out of forests in years to come. They'll figure it out eventually and hopefully will undo their silly changes!

Edit... I believe the closest thing we have to the Reform is an Aebi in this country.

Osterity is the issue in Germany the councils don't have the money what Unimogs they have they are keeping longer. The issue with Unimogs and there size that bothers me as well, you can blame that on customers wanting more power and burocrats with all the emission requirements take the new UGE euro 6 the amount of work that they had to do to fit all that on the chassis was ridiculous. You've only got to look a cars now compared to old and indeed modern tractors compared to a grey furgy.
In my opinion of the most versatile unimog as a utility vehicle was the U1600/214/240

Spot on. Enough power in a small (ish) package.

I suppose all the technology needed to do some jobs does take up space, but you'd think there would be somewhere in the market for a small machine. Even the U20 was pretty massive. The last real light machine I think was the U90 - something I've looked at and considered.

If my 406 had just a bit more power it would be much more user friendly. I don't mind the noise or the cramped cab. What does bother me is not being able to do more than about 30mph up a hill even when empty! Driving your 1450 was an eye opener. That's an incredible machine and one that I will always hope to own one day.

Dig deep to bye my 1450 Neil any ways someone's offering to buy it of me and I'm not so sure 😕 Your 406 should do at least 45 mph and fly up hills if the pumps been opened up are the led seals on the back of the pump on the square plate ? A healthy engine is a joy in a 406 ask Casto 😀😀

Nice. I remember my father had a brand new MB 1000 on demo back in the late 80 s. There is also a MB 1000  just a few miles from here with a rear mounted loader.

I've not had chance to have a proper drive in her yet but she sounds sweat.

Do you happen to know the owner off the 1000? I've reverse steer on my trac and was thinking of a rear loader but never seem one apart from the youtube videos in Germany.
