A couple of snaps of my Mog
« on: June 09, 2014, 03:10:09 pm »
Just a couple of snaps of my Mog at my uncle in law's farm. I will be adding more, especially all the bits of the air braking system that have been removed and handed to me in a box! Bit of a jigsaw, but have begun to clean them up and restore them. However have taken on another project which is taking priority and that is a seed drill. I am dismantling and will de-rust, clean and respray that before I start on the Mog. Interestingly I note that my Mog has a front hinge, so getting the cab off will not be too traumatic Ihope.

Hang on a minute.... Front hinge? You don't mean the front mount do you? A little rubber bushing with threaded studs sticking out that locate onto the cab? If so you can't raise it on that, it needs that part loosening then the front lifting a few inches and the tipping brackets to be attached. Trying to tip it on the mount could (probably will) prove costly!

Oh and one last thing, where's the mog in that picture? :D

If you look at the picture, directly under the Merc emblem is a single 'hinge' bolted to the cab and the bumper.

I thought that may be the case. The bodies of Unimogs are three point mounted to allow the chassis to flex. It's mounted on both sides at the rear and that hinge is the front mount. The cab cannot be raised on the mount, so please don't try!

If you look at the bottom edge of the cab roughly in line with the chassis rails there will (probably) be little tabs with holes in. These are the attachment points for the tilt supports to fit to. There are also a pair of holes in line at a slight angle from upright in the chassis rails - this is where the tilt supports bolt to the chassis. To fit them you need to loosen the nuts on the front mount and lift the front of the cab about 100mm. There's a recent post about the tilt brackets. I'll edit it in to this post in a moment...

This model wont have the cab tilt brackets, it's too early an example, you can tell it's an early model by the pressed rear panel (no windows in the quarters) and the vents in the front wings.
to tilt the cab you'll have to make brackets that clamp to the front box section and bolt to the chassis, i'll post some pics if i can.

That's a very tidy early mog you've got there Tim, I've always had a soft spot for the early 900's, the wing vents are really cool I think :)

I'm sure you will. Mog ownership seems to be a constant learning process, but you'll pick it all up fairly quickly and all will be well.

You're not the only one who thought that the front mount was a tilt hinge... Somewhere on here is a post from me saying the exact same thing and someone else getting all stressed because if I used it for that job I would break something! :D
