On the weekend...
« on: March 20, 2015, 05:45:40 am »
Last weekend,I went camping with my missus.

Had some trouble with the Mog jumping out of reverse when under load. This does not happen when I am towing something in reverse down hill however.I wonder if the linkage is out of adjustment? ITs a 416 that was ex Army, with four forward gears, you can only engage reverse  in
low ratio.(apparantly thats normal for Military Mogs?)

Is non Hypoid EP80 the right stuff for the Gear box on this wagon?

Hi Norsk,

First things first, the 4x4 gear box is very nice :)
Unfortunately the symptoms yours is showing are signs of a gearbox out job, and a rebuild. You could look at the gear lever rubber boot,as sometimes these can be tight and pull the lever out of gear, or the detent for the gear lever could be warn. Otherwise it's a case of just living with the box as it is.
It looks like an amazing area you were camping in by the way :)

The 4x4 box looks like a good option. You can get much quicker reverse speeds than you can with the 6 speed.

Oil wise, SAE 80, 80w90 or 85w90 can be used. Just make sure it's not a hypoid oil.

Edit... Reverse in low range only is pretty vital. The 6 speed box can make about 12kph flat out in reverse, the 4x4 box in low 4th can do 30! You really don't want to be going that fast backwards!

Good luck. Hopefully it will turn out to be something simple (cheap!) to fix.

Just a thought......... I don't know if this applies to your mog as well? On my 404 I had to remove the top plate to sort a selector...... I made the big mistake of doing this on a slightly uphill piece of ground.

Everything was fine until I came to put the selector plate back on? I found that I could set up all the gears ready to receive the selectors and as I put the plate in all the gears had slid back because the nose was up!!

I eventually managed to jack up the back and get it level - but how I wished I had thought of the slope problem first!!

Also 404 owners....... when I was a Mog virgin, I believed the helmets on the internet that said if you remove the interlock on the reverse lever - you can get reverse in high range too! The pratt even gave a "how to" - believe me it is complete and utter nonsense and if I can save just one person from all that work for nothing - GOOD!

The reverse gear is only available through the low ratio shaft and anyone who tells you different is full of ............!

I took the plate off the bottom and adjusted a nut on a rod on the bottom of the Box.This gave me more "reverse gear" I simply screwed in inwards, along the shaft.this moved the forward/reverse lever further back.

The shaft is cross drilled and the nut castleted ,so if you go past the factory hole for the split pin,you have to lock it with another nut screwed ontop of it.

This has so far sorted my problem of it hoping out of reverse. The larger gear felt a bit sharp on the edges, but I think that was a result of the selector not picking it up correctly. Its a simple fix, took longer for all the Oil to drain than to do the job.

Just for information the 4by 4 gearbox is the same as 6 speed it's the selector that's different I've swapped these and indeed still have one in the garage. Military like them for getting out of the **** and rail way companies for obvious reasons. I find the 6 speed a bit slow sometimes.

Is there a way to remove the 1st/2nd lock on reverse in the 6 speed box? Even hitting the rev limiter (3000rpm on mine) in 2nd the reverse is slow as hell. I could get out and crawl faster!

I can see why the army wouldn't like it. If anything went wrong you'd be right up the creek by the time you'd got the thing backed up or turned around.

Thers a gate stopping 3rd and 4rth but then there is a chance of dropping into no mans land and losing all gears if I remember right, I can not remember if it's possible to convert the selector plate.

Ok. Sounds like I should avoid that then! How easy is it to swap from 6 to 4x4? I understand cascade doesn't work with 4x4?

Just seen this NJC just cruising the forum
You've got me thinking 4 speed should work with cascade and yet I've never seen one in real life , the cascade is bolted between the flywheel and the main gearbox
You can swap yours for a 4speed I you can find the selector cover. You need the top cover because it has another lever to select low box, when you select reverse it shift this lever into low box automatically.
