I've only just spotted this one. It's the same Mog as the mud run U900 that I listed earlier.

Following on from the Facebook post, here's another minor mishap. Same chap as I went off roading with - if I'd have seen this before I went there's a chance I'd still not have ever been in a Unimog!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&list=FLwMkwXuG16vWH4RDlkACl9g&v=O46LFB-S7RM
Apparently it ran for a while because he couldn't stop it with the hand throttle so he had to stall it. Not easy when the wheels aren't on the ground!

this is the unimogs Achilles heal, due to its high nose weight and low tail weight, the nose weight acts as a cater leaver, infact in truck trials and serious off road competitions, competitors often fill the rear tyres of unimogs with water.
in this situation the gears should have been used in a unimog, rather than the brakes. also, when going into a down hill position such as this, or going downhill at all, its usually best to either accelerate or get ready to accelerate, this is due to the unimogs heavy nose weight means it doesnt like going down steep hills, one of its main disadvantages off road actually. if ever you feel like a unimog is going to go over forwards or at an angle like this one, in most cases you should accelerate out of it.
having said that, the unimog does have a low center of gravity, and are incredibly stable on side slopes. :)

When I watched it I wondered if the winch line should have been in line with the track going down the hill? With it at that angle as soon as it started to slide it was pulling the truck over the way that it was already leaning, so it didn't take much to push it past the point of no return.

It's a live and learn thing. It was only a hobby truck for him and I don't think he'd had it long. He's sold it now and moved on to other toys. Shame really as he's a top bloke and helped me a fair bit talking about the mechanical side of things. I'd have liked to go off roading with him at some point when I get my own truck.

thats true, although i wonder if they had it straight behind so that it didnt pull the wire on with a bundle at one end, thats one of the advantages of the f56 werner (just an example, there are others), it often comes with auto feed so the wire or rope is put on evenly over the drum.

like you say, when moving from any vehicle to another you need to learn its limits, shame he sold it though  :-\ , looked like a tidy truck

Possible I suppose, but he was winding out. Once round the corner if for any reason he would have needed to come back he would have wanted it directly behind him to avoid that situation?

Can you get winches with a level wind system then? I've not seen them. The forestry winch I was using the other day was mounted on an A frame with a pulley on the top so no matter where the pull was directed and how much the winched item moved the spool was always at 90 degrees to the rope coming in. Clever I thought.

yep, heres a pic of the f56 werner. awesome winch, variable pull and everything. 7.5 tonne LIFT!

It drives of main drive for the winch, and slides from side to side to feed it on evenly. we have one, but its removed at the mo for repairs  :) ours has 300 foot of rope on it.
