Newby Hall Vintage Rally 2013 report
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:46:55 pm »
Hello everybody  :D

This weekend was the Newby hall event, thankfully we were blessed with some cracking weather, the sun burn for which i am still suffering  :-[ ;)
This year there were 6 Unimogs in attendance:
Myself in the 411
Moose in the 406 145
Casto in his 406
Chris Armstrong in His 411
Chris Armstrong in his 417
and a 1750, i didnt get the chance to speak to the owner though  :(

I arrived at the site on friday evening at ETA 19:00 pm, to meet casto who had arrived at around 17:00 PM. The journey was, to say the least, eventfull, my top speed reached was 35MPH, (that was downhill, i aimed to do 30 mph on the level) upon arrival i was told by casto that my front right light was smashed  :( :'( we still cannot decide how it happened, i think it was a stone thrown up by a car tyre, casto thinks it may have been somebody in morrisons car park. anyhow, thats something to sort out.

casto also had a few small mishaps over the weekend, but i will let him decide if he wants to tell you  :)

so, we met up in the main show arena, where i was pleasantly surprised to find that the Unimogs had their own designated area  :D ;D
After a bit of banter we moved to the camp site, where we put tents up (casto and james bragging with a flip up roof tent, which they put on the ground  ::) )
casto then proceeded to get out his bbq, with help from James, who helped him make it, and i have to say, it was immense.  a serious peace of art:

so, whilst i was still putting my tent up, casto was kind enough to cook my burgers, which due to the slight technical issue in the size of the grill holes, ended up in large falling into the charcoal below  :D :P more info on how we over came this issue later  ;) mean while, for the first time in my life, i go the chance to see someone cooking chips whilst camping, that right, Casto and James had brought sunflower oil and POTATOES!  James it seemed was a pro at cooking chips:

it was during eating time that moose decided to turn up, pushing the time limit at five to nine (anyone that arrived after nine was put into a holding bay for security.)

So after a few beers (my bombardier to hand) and a good chat about modifying the bbq, we went to sleep.

So, saturday morning came, along with Chris in his scania,

So after unloading the truck and hiding Chris's lads grey furgy behind a tree  :D ;) we ate breakfast then went and lined up

After that it was basically a day for chilling, i would have taken some pics of other trucks but i didnt want my phone to go flat.

But come evening came the road run, lots of tractors going down to ripon, there was even a puddle splash as we drove over a ford  :o
once in Ripon we parked up in the market square (my back tyre on a kirb to show of articualtion  8) about 4 inches  :D )

whilst in ripon we went to the "small" sainsbury's across the road, which turned out to actually be a portal into a huge super market  :o
there we got the fundamentals such as beer, Cider, and alcohol  :D oh, and food...

On the journey back the lead unimog decided to put there foot down and over take a few vehicles, well that was it, me and james in the 34 bhp beast decided to release all its energy and went into warp speed, it was at this point that james decided that if he was gonna get a mog, it was a 411  ;) cause theyre so fun  :D

when we got back moose had the idea of turnign the bbq into a George Foreman grill

we literally watched the fat run from the burgers  8) after a slight simmer the burgers could then be transferred to the grill with no breakages  :D

after some food and chatter, myself, Casto, and James went to the beer tent, where an incredibly awesome guy was singing some great songs, many of which were very rude,  :)

Unfortunately i decided to use the cider tent, and upon seeing a sign for mulled wine, i thought, "hmm, ive never had that" and so decided to have a pint, safe to say i will never have one again  :-\ . i then decided to go onto dry cider, which if i'm generous, was a medium, most disappointed. after that i got bottled cider from the other bar.

So after many drinks and much boogying, we staggered back to the tent, very merry and in high spirits, after sitting around the fire for a bit it was bed time.

So, sunday turned up, and i dint feel to bad, neither did it seem were the others, if anything we were all a little tired after the late night.

it was really just a day of chilling on sunday, i went to get an icecream in the afternoon, casto and James followed shortly after, me being the gentleman let them go ahead of me, after they had ordered theirs i went to place my order of a double cone, only to be told they were completely out of stock, casto and James, gentlemen in there own hearts, did nothing but laugh  :(

chris then decided to take his unimog into the arena, where the narrator had to be given a card describing what it was, he was incredibley knowledgeable with most things though. i myself was to tired and sunburnt to bother going around the arena  :)

so thats that, im sure ive forgotten many things, there was a lot that happened, but after rapping the tent up, we set of home, my journey was mainly un-eventful.

I have however came away with a future project for events  ;)  8) top secret though :P

Well if nothing else this thread has explained the Kassy thing to me! Now it all makes sense!

It sounds like you guys had a great time. I don't know why but I always thought that your Doka was a 416? Didn't know they came in 406 wheelbase! One thing that has crossed my mind though - surely that shackle on the mirror arm of your dads mog must rattle around and drive you nuts? Or is it so loud in there that you don't hear it?

yeah, i thought id leave that half blank as it explains it.

the 406 dokas were only ever for the Lufthansa, they are very rare because people got them and chopped them up into single cabs.
The shackle doesnt rattle, 406's with standard springs are quite smooth, our 406 145 (145 stands for doka cab 406) also carrys quite a bit of weight, which makes the ride super smooth. :) and the 406's arent that loud if they have the sound proof engine cover, you can have a conversation easily :P

Agreed. Camp fire story it is. I did pop off a jubilee clip on the road run, on a water pipe. Quick fix on Sunday and she was fine
